BioShock creator Irrational Games is shutting down

Irrational Games cofounder Ken Levine confirms all but about 15 people will lose their jobs as he starts up a "smaller, more entrepreneurial" endeavor for Take-Two.

Irrational Games, creator of the BioShock series, is effectively shutting down. Cofounder Ken Levine revealed the news in an update on the developer's website today. The industry veteran will start a new endeavor for Irrational Games owner Take-Two Interactive, while all but around 15 staffers will be out of a job. It is unclear how many people Irrational Games employed at its Quincy, Mass. office.

"I am winding down Irrational Games as you know it," Levine said. "I’ll be starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor at Take-Two. That is going to mean parting ways with all but about fifteen members of the Irrational team. There’s no great way to lay people off, and our first concern is to make sure that the people who are leaving have as much support as we can give them during this transition."

To that end, Irrational Games will offer "financial support" to employees affected by the move, as well as the possibility to meet with other Take-Two studios to discuss future employment. Irrational Games will also host a recruiting day where third-party studios and publishers can meet with outgoing Irrational Games developers.

Levine's new project will be announced "in time," he said. The goal for the new endeavor will be to "make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable." Whatever form this new project ends up taking, it will be digitally delivered, he added.

"Seventeen years is a long time to do any job, even the best one. And working with the incredible team at Irrational Games is indeed the best job I've ever had. While I’m deeply proud of what we've accomplished together, my passion has turned to making a different kind of game than we've done before," Levine said. "To meet the challenge ahead, I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers. In many ways, it will be a return to how we started: a small team making games for the core gaming audience."

"When I first contemplated what I wanted to do, it became very clear to me that we were going to need a long period of design. Initially, I thought the only way to build this venture was with a classical startup model, a risk I was prepared to take," he added. "But when I talked to Take-Two about the idea, they convinced me that there was no better place to pursue this new chapter than within their walls. After all, they’re the ones who believed in and supported BioShock in the first place."

Levine's last BioShock-related project is the two-part BioShock Infinite Burial at Sea campaign. The first episode arrived in November, while the second debuts on March 25. It is unclear what this announcement means for the future of BioShock for the PlayStation Vita. We've reached out to Irrational Games and Take-Two for comment.

The entire BioShock universe is now in 2K's hands, Levine said, though no new installments have been announced beyond BioShock Infinite and BioShock for PS Vita.

"I'm handing the reins of our creation, the BioShock universe, to 2K so our new venture can focus entirely on replayable narrative," Levine said. "If we're lucky, we'll build something half as memorable as BioShock."

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I disagree, Andrew Ryan is a poor constructed vision of a parallel universe theory not to mention Elizabeth. Both were shallow, one-dimensional badly crafted characters and Levine or who actually wrote it, did a bad job and takes way to many easy ways out and ends up in a dead end where the only thing to do is either to can it all or make the character jump the wall, which ends up just bad

Both are proof of what happens when someone who is overmatched tries to make something that is not only a game but also a social commentary and fails miserably.

So let me clarify what i mean when i say its a decent game, its has nice graphics, a avg, gameplay but a terrible story and its social comments are just bad, and its clear we are dealing with a americans.view of the world.

So take this and the hype and we have a game that should never have been made.

seriously even if you disliked the combat Andrew Ryan was one of the best game characters of all time, smart, charismatic and well spoken....I didn't agree 100% with his views but I liked him a lot, it was one of the things that really got me with that game....

Irrational was a good studio, System Shock 1&2 they had a hand in Thief if I remember, Warren Spector worked with them before going on to make Deus Ex.....Irational was well respected...

They are decent but the hype Ken Levine gets is bad for gaming, so ya they should stop making those games.

Maybe it's just the way it was announced or the way he's quoted, but it really feels like he threw the rest of the company under the bus on this one. "Hey, so I don't want to do this anymore. I'm gonna take my ball and go home. The rest of you (except for my 15 best friends here) are on your own."

Sad news. Nevertheless, I wish success to Levine and his new studio, and that those unemployed find work. It was a talented team, here's to their future successes wherever they may go.

This sucks for the people who lost their jobs. Hopefully they can get back on their feet quickly elsewhere. And, even though I disliked Infinite, I'm sad to see the world of Bioshock go. As much as we scream "New IP's New IPS" and protests against some good milking, it would be hard to say that the Bioshock universe wasn't pretty cool and that we all wouldn't have paid full attention to Bioshock 4 on the PS4 and XBONE and PC. Hey, I'm a hardcore Nintendo dude, but developers like Irrational Games has always been what kept me buying a Playstation every generation.

From the interviews I've seen with Ken and from playing his games, the dude is so passionate about his work. Maybe around this time next year we will be hearing what his next project is. I'll look forward to that,

You cant built a triple A title with just 15 guys, its as simple as that. By ''highly replayable'' he probably means mobile games.

It'll probably be a game based on the Logan's Run movie he's writing. Or even better a new System Shock.

He's probably pissed about the new Thief game and wants to go indie which could be good.

As he doesn't have the System Shock IP rights (I believe EA has them, not 100% sure, as initially it was Looking Glass/Origin Systems which are now both non existent), this is not likely at all. That was why we have Bioshock, the spiritual successor to that series. Also, he only worked on System Shock 2, not the original.

Note to Ken, completely dislodge yourself from big corps, go pure indie you can't possibly go wrong there! I'll say it once I'll say it 10000 times, the gaming crash is acomin atop them thar hills, when she blows best to be far aweeeeee. Stick your head into the Indie Dev hole and you'll be alright.

Why would he abandon his financially and creatively safe position inside Take-two?
Even with Take-two being probably one of the better publishers out there, they pretty much let Ken do whatever the hell he wants.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> No, crowdfunding and Indie Dev is totally different. You can USE crowdfunding for indie dev, but it's not always necessary. And Kickstarter, I've learned too recently, isn't all that great either. I've had issues with funding projects on there. I've even had to ask for refunds on certain projects. I used to think crowdfunding was gonna be a great thing but after experiencing several issues with a few of those projects, I'm starting to wonder just how bad crowdfunding really is. But thats not saying Indie Devs can't possibly save the industry, becuase Indie devs CAN. Just not so much through Kickstarter or Indiegogo.

I only played and owned the first Bioshock... great game and story. I never got around to playing the next two games and I feel somewhat guilty for this happening. I hope the families of those affected are able to rebound swiftly.
