BioShock creator Irrational Games is shutting down

Irrational Games cofounder Ken Levine confirms all but about 15 people will lose their jobs as he starts up a "smaller, more entrepreneurial" endeavor for Take-Two.

Irrational Games, creator of the BioShock series, is effectively shutting down. Cofounder Ken Levine revealed the news in an update on the developer's website today. The industry veteran will start a new endeavor for Irrational Games owner Take-Two Interactive, while all but around 15 staffers will be out of a job. It is unclear how many people Irrational Games employed at its Quincy, Mass. office.

"I am winding down Irrational Games as you know it," Levine said. "I’ll be starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor at Take-Two. That is going to mean parting ways with all but about fifteen members of the Irrational team. There’s no great way to lay people off, and our first concern is to make sure that the people who are leaving have as much support as we can give them during this transition."

To that end, Irrational Games will offer "financial support" to employees affected by the move, as well as the possibility to meet with other Take-Two studios to discuss future employment. Irrational Games will also host a recruiting day where third-party studios and publishers can meet with outgoing Irrational Games developers.

Levine's new project will be announced "in time," he said. The goal for the new endeavor will be to "make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable." Whatever form this new project ends up taking, it will be digitally delivered, he added.

"Seventeen years is a long time to do any job, even the best one. And working with the incredible team at Irrational Games is indeed the best job I've ever had. While I’m deeply proud of what we've accomplished together, my passion has turned to making a different kind of game than we've done before," Levine said. "To meet the challenge ahead, I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers. In many ways, it will be a return to how we started: a small team making games for the core gaming audience."

"When I first contemplated what I wanted to do, it became very clear to me that we were going to need a long period of design. Initially, I thought the only way to build this venture was with a classical startup model, a risk I was prepared to take," he added. "But when I talked to Take-Two about the idea, they convinced me that there was no better place to pursue this new chapter than within their walls. After all, they’re the ones who believed in and supported BioShock in the first place."

Levine's last BioShock-related project is the two-part BioShock Infinite Burial at Sea campaign. The first episode arrived in November, while the second debuts on March 25. It is unclear what this announcement means for the future of BioShock for the PlayStation Vita. We've reached out to Irrational Games and Take-Two for comment.

The entire BioShock universe is now in 2K's hands, Levine said, though no new installments have been announced beyond BioShock Infinite and BioShock for PS Vita.

"I'm handing the reins of our creation, the BioShock universe, to 2K so our new venture can focus entirely on replayable narrative," Levine said. "If we're lucky, we'll build something half as memorable as BioShock."

Also he's putting a stop to things before Bioshock got turned into a yearly sequel machine. I can sort of respect that.

@Rotondi He said he wants to make "narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable"

That isn't going to happen when your publisher is demanding the next Bioshock, and that it needs to be more and more mainstream to "expand the audience"

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Right. And that's the reason I think Ken is changing things up. Not because he doesn't believe in releasing sequels. Infinite was a strange experience. Good story, great art but just this forced, montonous gameplay. I think Ken definitely wants to be in a setting where he has 100% control of a game from start to finish again. But I wouldn't put it past Ken to release a crap load of sequels, especially if it's a game with a building story or something.

Well this was out of nowhere.

Then again, maybe Levine is just seeing the writing on the wall. He knows AAA games with AAA budgets are unsustainable, and he's getting out before the crash.

@Thanatos2k The AAA space will most likely shrink before imploding, some games can coexist in the AAA space with AAA budgets but not as many as we have right now, that's why you see some AAA games failing and others like GTA thrive... it's all about market saturation and being able to control hype and control expectations, if a developer can do them both while maintaining great quality then they can still be successful in the AAA space.

I don't think there will be an industry crash as one big relentless phenomenon, most likely a gradual disappearance of the AAA model to obscurity and only a few games will remain.Still, you make a great case and you might as well be right and I might be just too optimistic.

I couldn't give a flying frick about the next Bioshock, to put people out of a job on the whim of a beardo weirdo's artistic pride is bull. If someone said the bottom line is Irrational can't turn a profit, then disbanding makes sense. To fire people who probably enjoyed their jobs and did great at it just so he can avoid the pressure such a wealthy position demands is tantamount to a baby tantrum.

That is sad. What is the industry coming to when a successful company just decides to downsize...I wonder if 2k made an offer for the franchise that Kevin couldn't refuse. Maybe in the process he saw an opportunity to not be responsible for such a large group...I wish the best to those laid off in this process.

This is the industry nowadays. Even great studios get shutdown at the drop of a hat. Very scary industry to work in. There's no stability or job security.

<< LINK REMOVED >> While I wasn't a fan of Bioshock to Infinity and beyond either, I think it's a bigger disappointment that IR is actually shutting down. Da well, Ken will probably go produce the next big Indie game or something.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't think it was because of sales at all. Also, Ken Levine mentioned that the budget for Infinite wasn't all that big. I think they're downsizing IG because they will be for smaller projects. 15 people getting paid, is easier than 100+ getting paid.

Well........let's put it this way. It's not the end of Bioshock since 2K will be taking over. But Ken Lavine made the game with great storytelling with twists so......yea, we'll see how 2K handles it now.

this is terrible news. if Ken Levine's name is not attached to any future Bioshock titles, then I/m not gonna want anything to do with them.at the same time, I'll always be interested in seeing what he can come up with for future IP's. the man is a genius.

@drwaldy @PeterDuck Its terrible. They created one of the most financially successful games ever and Levine decides to fire everyone. How can anyone work in this industry. Levine's announcement - "Thanks for your hard work and sleepless nights guys. You made me a ton of money. Now pack your bags and get out."

This is a bit depressing. I guess it never stops being depressing when good developers (and publishers) shut down or downsize. Well l guess we just have to wait and see what happens.

What a highly fucking misleading article title. Seriously. They are down sizing quite a bit, sure, but they aren't disappearing.

While I'm sad to see that so many of people that developed one of my favorite franchises ever go, I'm also excited for what Levine and crew have in store for us next.

idk where people are getting the idea that this is completely down to money. This, to me, seems more like a creative decision: to trim down the team massively, and start working on something completely different, with a different set of principles that their previous games were based on. Irrational has always been about Ken and his projects, so without him, there isn't much need for Irrational.
Does it suck these talented people lose their jobs? of course, but since Take-two seems to be supporting them, i think they'll be snapped up pretty quickly.
