BioShock Creator's Next Game "Highly Creative and Innovative"

Take-Two CEO teases Ken Levine's next game.

While BioShock creator Ken Levine's new project remains largely a mystery, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has now teased that the game--whatever it turns out to be--will be "highly creative and innovative."

No Caption Provided

"I'm not going to steal Ken's thunder, but we're thrilled to be in business with Ken," Zelnick said today at the MKM Partners Investor Day conference in New York City. "What I can say is you would expect that Ken would work on something highly creative and innovative. I think that would be a reasonable expectation for whatever he does next."

When BioShock developer Irrational Games effectively closed its doors in 2014, Levine and a small team of others started work on a "smaller, more entrepreneurial" game for Take-Two. Levine has since said this game, which runs on Unreal Engine 4, will be about "fluid relationships."

It's a sci-fi game set in a brand new universe that isn't anything like a game from The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones developer Telltale Games. You can check out this post for everything else we know.

As for the BioShock series, it's now being developed by 2K Games in California. While no new entries in the franchise have been announced, Zelnick said previously that the series still has lots of room to grow commercially and creatively, a point he reiterated today.

"The franchise is in the hands of 2K," Zelnick said. "They'll make announcements in due time about any upcoming releases. But BioShock is unquestionably a permanent franchise for our company and one that we do believe in."

What would you like to see from Ken Levine and the BioShock series in the future? Let us know in the comments below.

Bioshock 2 was a bit shit, so I'm not particularly inclined to see where the series goes without Levine. But, whatever he does next will probably be awesome.

@jecomans: I liked Bioshock 2. Worst game I ever played was an old PS2 game called ISO. Now that was a big hot steaming pile of crap.

System Shock 3!!! ...duh...

Now that EA doesn't own it anymore (Night Dive Studios bought the IP from them) that CAN happen if Ken wants it too. Hell even if he doesn't do anything other than write the story (which he has the basic foundation down) I'd love even that.

if it is anything like bioshock one when it launched then it is a 100% buy, but the way games are developed nowadays I doubt I will be impressed, hope im wrong.

After how he just up and shut down his last studio instead of having someone else run it and laying off all those employees...Ken Levine can suck a huge bag of d***s.

@klugenbeel: He got burned out and wanted to go smaller to have a more stable company. There is nothing wrong with what he did, dude. Businesses close all the time for multiple reasons, and lay-offs are very common in the video game industry all around.

"Highly creative and innovative" all sounds very good, but it would also be good if the game was good. I hope it's not something that makes me feel as if the devs want to tell a distinct story and dammit! you're gonna experience that exact story and nothing else. No "cinematic" stuff that makes multiple playthroughs by different gamers all look the same, even if it's about relationships and feelings, which is oh so very important to convey in games. Games are per definition about playing and experimenting, so anything that constricts the gameplay is something I have no interest in. Being able to *get creative* with what the game offers is something I'm always interested in.

@Hurvl: He said he was working on some kind of narrative lego so that should put your fears to rest. If there is one thing Ken Levine is good at it is telling a compelling story.

@kljvoph: Yes but that actually raises fears :). So many times we've heard talk of a similar nature from legendary game creators who decide to go and do a "smaller" thing which they claim will be something new, or tackle some problem that no one else has been able to solve in gaming or at least one genre, etc. etc.. So often it ends up being a huge letdown, like say with Peter Molyneaux.

Specifically on this case, I have been extremely skeptical about the narrative legos thing. Many have tried to create a narrative heavy game that they claim offers choice, or isn't linear, or is more freeform, whatever, and then it turns out to accomplish none of that, even if the game is overall decent.

@kljvoph: It's just that reading "creative and innovative" makes my Pretentious-radar go on full alert. Such marketing talk can often precede something underwhelming when it comes to the gameplay and fun factor, but I guess I shouldn't be so quick to judge. Ken Levine isn't David Cage or Peter Molyneux after all.

@Hurvl: @kljvoph Even when there's nothing pretentious at all, they often are just simply mistaken or take their ideas too far and we get as you say an undewhelming result. That's the danger that comes with successful and highly creative people like this, sometimes they just go way off the mark. This case is maybe a bit less worrying though since it's being supported by a big publisher, the idea is probably not totally wacky/bad :).

Yeah I'm not expecting anything creative or innovative after Infinite was such a mess. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

Wasn't crazy about Bioshock 2, haven't played Bioshock. That said, I actually enjoyed Infinite a lot, thought it was very creative.

@beantownsean: I loved Infinite (my easy favourite of the bunch). 2 I thought sucked a bit; so many crazy design flaws. Bioshock is still very worth playing. I think it loses it's momentum a few hours from the end, but it is a great game nonetheless.

A fluid relationship reminds me of stuff I saw on Pr0n Hub while search for the leaked Fallout 4 video last month.

More Bioshockes-esque fun? Sure
