BioShock Remaster Trailer Shows How Much Better First Game Looks

See what the 2007 game looks like with a fresh coat of paint.

2K Games today released a new trailer for BioShock: The Collection, specifically focusing on the remastered version of BioShock.

As you can see, the 2007 game is looking better than ever. However, it's not clear what platform this footage was captured on, but whatever the case, 2K has said all games in The Collection run at 1080p and "up to" 60 FPS.

The Collection includes remastered versions of BioShock, BioShock 2, and BioShock Infinite, so it's possible other videos will focus on the latter two games. All single-player DLC is included for the three games, while The Collection also comes with a video series featuring commentary from director Ken Levine and lead artist Shawn Robertson.

As announced previously, BioShock and BioShock 2 are being remastered for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, while Infinite is only getting a remastered version for consoles. The Collection for PC does include Infinite, but this will be the regular, non-remastered version that is likely on par with the PC version that is already available.

Additionally, PC players may be able to get The Collection free. If you already own BioShock, BioShock 2, and/or the Minerva's Den BioShock 2 DLC on Steam, you can get a free upgrade to the remastered version of BioShock or BioShock 2.

The Collection launches on September 13 for all platforms. The compilation is being developed by Blind Squirrel Games, which collaborated with Irrational Games in the past for Infinite.

This looks quite a bit better than I remember it looking on pc and looks night and day better than on console especially the blurry low res ps3 version. I just bought bioshock on ps3 like a couple months ago for 3$ cause I was itching to play it again and earn some trophies. It looks really bad on ps3 , this footage looks so clean and nice like they actually put some time and effort into these the way a remaster should be done

It looks exactly like it looked when I played it in directx 10 when it came out on the PC. Honestly, and no elitism here, but I can't see a difference. I assume it has more to do with gamespots shitty flash player.

@dlaney34: actually it's probably an improvement. Those games did not look great on pc, they seemed more like a lazy console port than anything which they probably were. I'd bet these versions on pc will look better......it wouldnt take much

@BuyaPC: The game was one of the 1st that supported directx 10. Most GPU's, though, when the game came out we're still supporting dx9 only. If you had something like a 480, like I did at the time, we'll the game looked fantastic. I have screenshots of it turned off and on - and the water reflections, to ambient occlusion were night and day on dx10 vs. dx9

Still, I'm sure there will be some much sharper textures , and hopefully it will be optimized perfectly, as it should - it certainly will be fun playing it again at 1440p, 144 fps - certainly not something I could accomplish when the game came out.

And coincidentally I recently decided to replay the trilogy for funsies, usually in this instance since I own all three games already I wouldn't bother with this just because it's a graphics upgrade (just like the Metro series, I already own both games, why get it again just for new graphics?) but since this includes all the DLC for the games I may actually consider it now...

@DJ-Wolfman09: Why get it again for new graphics? When speaking about Metro - they upgraded the entire gameplay experience, from gun battles, to sound, to yes, the engine itself. If you didn't replay Metro Redux, then you missed out on the experience the developers intended.

You see, often times development gets restricted due to budget, and the designers never get to see their intent. With remasters, (which get created with successful games), Devs get to see their original vision come to light.

It's a win win, but they can be done wrong, and in the aim of profit, over vision.

As beautiful visually it was, Bioshock Infinite ruined this series in my opinion. Might get this to relive 1 & 2 in all of its next gen glory.

@imike_m: the only problem with infinite was it was being released on 5 systems all at once. That constraint left the PC version looking very much like a PC port - without much in the way of optimization, although it had better AA and occlusion.

@imike_m: I actually think infinite was still great even in spite of the insane downgrade that happened. The e3 2011 demo was better in every possible way compared to the retail version. I would give my left nut to have the whole game at that quality level and it wasn't just resolution and shit like that the world looked totally different the enemies were better , audio was better, the city was bigger and more detailed and even the sky coaster thing was much more inspired and useful than it ended up being. Don't belive me look it up. Anyway having said all that I still LOVED infinite which says a lot about how well made it was if it can still be a masterpiece after such an insane downgrade that made the watch dogs downgrade look small.

@imike_m: The absolute worst thing about Infinite was that there was no quicksave like the first two games. How can you have fun experimenting with all your weapons and scenarios and finding the most efficient means of dispatching enemies without quicksave? For example, in the first game I only discovered that the easiest, fastest, and most efficient method of killing Big Daddies was to use 4 electrobolt traps in succession (the number is less on lower difficulties) and a single pistol round to set things in motion, through a lot of fun trial and error. With quicksave you can toy with your enemies in a fun sandbox. Without quicksave it's just next goal -next goal -next goal -done. I must've clocked over 100 hours in the first BioShock alone just messing around. Granted my efficient playing style eventually meant that even the hardest difficulty became too easy and I ran into the problem of having too much ammo for all my weapons (especially since I decided to max my Wrench abilities early on by going back to the first level right after I got the camera and took pictures of Big Daddies until the level was maxed out, which didn't take very long) but I greatly enjoyed every moment.

You also can't explore as leisurely in Infinite since you risk losing all progress should something unexpected happen before a checkpoint. With Infinite I lost the open playing style I had in the first 2 games and got a decidedly less exciting linear experience. It wasn't terrible but it definitely wasn't as fun and I finished the game waaay quicker than the first two. Infinite definitely wouldn't mean nearly as much to me without the Burial at Sea DLC since it reminds me of the first two masterpieces.

@imike_m: That is your opinion and I can respect that. My opinion though while it definitely feels like it took a left turn from what made the first two memorable for me, it replaces it with something that makes it memorable on it's own and even then still feels like it belongs. It in no way ruined the series...

Wasn't the original in 1080p resolution. Hopefully they also made the resolution to 4k. Cause who cares about 1080 anymore.

I really love the Bioshock series, but...

Is it just me, or does this pretty much look exactly like the original versions? I'll definitely play this in September, but what will really show whether they made a sincere effort to remake this is whether Tenembaum will have her own look as opposed to looking like the standard female NPC.

@Gabe1976: it's not a remake, it's a remaster......HUGE difference. So no, none of the art or assets are going to be remade nor should they. And what does the Tannenbaum comment mean? How does she look like a standard female npc, that doesn't even make sense. This trailer looks much cleaner and sharper than the originals with a higher framerate which is what a remaster is supposed to be.

@BuyaPC: Alright, it's a remaster, sorry for the semantic difference. What I mean about Tenembaum is that when you first see her (in Bioshock 1) wielding a shotgun on that upper floor, she looks just like the other NPC female characters in the game. She doesn't have her own look. Like I said, I'm definitely going to play these in September, but I just don't see that much of a difference in the graphics so far, that's all. I'll have a chance to make a more informed judgement when I actually play the game. We'll see in September, and I'll be very happy if you're right.

Nice, BioShock 1 & 2 for free if you already own them. I was a little scared that you needed to buy the collection to get these. I really don't want Infinite, that game sucks so bad.

But as a PC gamer, isn't this remastering pretty pointless?

@Litchie: talk about contradicting yourself. "Nice bioshock for free, I was worried you needed to buy the collection to get these". And then without missing a beat " but as a pc gamer isn't remastering pretty pointless". The pretentious idiocy of wanna be elitist gamers never ceases to amaze me. "Remasters are pointless ...,but.....can I get these for free" is essentially what your comment said

@BuyaPC: No, I was asking about this remaster, since the video didn't make the game look better at all I thought. It maybe does for console gamers. That I wouldn't know since I haven't played it on a console. "The pretentious idiocy of elitist gamers", lol. Chill dude, it was a question. So far it does look pretty pointless for PC gamers, according to the video.

@Litchie: 1 and 2 can benefit from the upgrade. Obviously, at max settings, the PC versions already look better than the console ones, but they're old enough that even the PC versions could stand a facelift. Probably some higher res textures, and maybe upgraded particle effects and shit like that. Not much, but nice anyway. And that's why it'll be a free upgrade for PC gamers, rather than having to buy a new copy. And as for Infinite, they straight up said that they aren't doing anything to the PC version because it's already at that higher level, assuming you have the system to run it at max settings. The console version is being remastered to bring it up to the level that the PC version is already.

Yes it looks much nicer but I'd rather have a System Shock 2 remake now that the original and SS3 are coming out.

@jj2112: Is the "new" System Shock not a remake of the first? I don't really see why a completely different set of people would continue a series of games that has been inactive for so long. I'm pretty sure it's just a remake of the first though.

@Pelezinho777: their earlier game system shock 2 was better in my opinion. They watered down their formula a bit and released it on consoles to grab the casuals and it worked.

@Pelezinho777: It IS true, though. System Shock 2 was a far better gameplay experience than BioShock was. It had more weapons, actual RPG elements, resource management, a far more rewarding powers system, SHODAN, and a far better designed world. BioShock is unbeatable in the story department, but the gameplay and the story just don't mix. System Shock feels a lot more comfortable in its own skin, if you get my meaning.

While not that big of an issue, the video above shows that they're not really using the best AA. The video isn't really the best look at what may be different. Look at the Candyland comparison. It would have been awesome if they made the games in Unreal Engine 4.

I only played the first one so I'm all over this. It's great when a remaster actually has stuff you never played though I suppose it remains to be seen just how remastered it is. I'm buying it anyway, great games and by all accounts the DLC is top notch too.

Looks exactly like the original.

As soon as I read the devs say "up to 60fps" I knew this remaster would be as minimal as possible.

Which really sucks. Bioshock has some of the best art ever put into a game, but I have full confidence this will be the most minimally modified, totally lazily ported remaster since Sleeping Dogs.

@nikolistary: No, it is slightly different. For instance, there's now seaweed hanging off the buildings and more pronounced bubbles, where it wasn't in the original; it also looks somewhat darker, perhaps dank. It's more realistic to how the city might look I think, but it's arguable whether that's a plus or a minus. You can get more out of this. One part that's arguably worse simply because it doesn't have sheen on the flooring anymore, is the comparison at 3:35, but again, maybe that's more realistic seeing as the city is wearing out and not being kept up.

Just as huge Bioshock fan, and got all of the Bioshock games, pretty much on all systems (minus the original Bioshock on iPad, and two on 360), I do actually plan on playing this. I'm reading Bioshock: Rapture too. I have Infinite on Steam, but my PC can't run it well, so while it's not my favorite Bioshock, it's the one that'll get the most out of the upgrade for me personally. I can't wait to jump back into Rapture though, even though I've beaten it multiple times already.
