BioWare MMORPG landing in 2009

Austin executive dates mystery game, says it will trump WOW technically by using enterprise software from a company associated with the CIA.

Last year, BioWare announced its entry into the massively multiplayer role-playing game market. The Canadian developer has enjoyed over a decade of critical and commercial success with its single-player RPGs for the Xbox and PC, such as Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. However, little is known about its first MMORPG, which is currently in the works at its Austin studio.

Now, a little more is known about the BioWare MMORPG. The most recent issue of Information Week contains an article examining some of the technology behind the project, which will reportedly use enterprise software from StreamBase Systems. In the course of the article, BioWare technical director Bill Dalton revealed that the MMORPG is currently slated to ship in 2009. As of press time, BioWare reps were unavailable to confirm the date for the game, which currently has no title, genre, publisher, or platform associated with it.

In the past, Massachusetts-based StreamBase has made headlines because it is partially owned by a company that provides technology to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). BioWare's MMORPG will use StreamBase's powerful software for "complex event processing" to sustain massive gamewide events involving thousands of players.

"With a multiplayer online game, you don't know whether you're going to have 1,000 people playing or 50,000," Dalton told the magazine. BioWare will also use StreamBase software to identify cheaters, prevent code hacks, and keep track of the MMORPG's customer base.

Well, of course it will be technically superior to WoW. It's coming out 5 years later.

I just hope that companies keep innovating with MMO's, and not just copying other people.

"Mass Effect has the action, the adventure, the awesome graphics, the cool traditional gameplay, the revolutionary new gameplay improvements, amazing sound, and it rolls all of those features together and it creates what looks like the Best RPG I have ever seen!"-Joesmith34 You haven't oplayed the game....you have no right to say any of that. Plus, the likelyhood of this appearing on the 360 is in question....bioware makes games on the 360, but not all their games appear on the 360 (baldur's gate, dragon age, more). Anyway, mmorpg are the biggest wastes of time ever.....

I'm sure the future of this Role Playing Game will be great on the Xbox 360!! But the Action-RPG game I'm looking forward to more than any other is the game that won the award for Best RPG at the 2006 E3. That game is Mass Effect. Mass Effect has the action, the adventure, the awesome graphics, the cool traditional gameplay, the revolutionary new gameplay improvements, amazing sound, and it rolls all of those features together and it creates what looks like the Best RPG I have ever seen!

Bioware making a MMORPG? This will be awesome! Bioware makes amazing games, and a Nioware MMO could easily be much better than wow.

I dont like MMO's much anymore. Played UO for a couple years, and didnt get beyond my 30 day trial of WoW. But if anyone can bring me back to the genre , Bioware can.

BioWare is like N64-era Rare: they haven't made a bad game yet. I'm amped for this title and anything they else they've got. However, i'm saddened every time that I read "BioWare" and don't see "Knights of the Old Republic 3" mentioned.

Gawd yet another MMO to fill an already saturated market. They better try something new with it. All these games are the exact same .. just with a different coat of paint.

I'm really excited for this - I hope whatever they do, they do it without looking over WoW's shoulder, I perfer not to play MMO clones, I tend to lose interest really quick, I went from EQ to WoW, and didnt play WoW very long at all. EQ1 I played 6years, every other mmo I hardly make it past the free month, unless its improved or has something different.

Why the hell do people get the stupid ass idea that just to be a succesful MMO, you have to be a "WoW killer" or have 8 mil subs. In the MMO market there is a subsection for Niche marketing. This is usually directed not at the masses (WoW), but at a group of people who already enjoy a certain Franchise or style of play (KOTOR MMO\Baulders Gate MMO) (Pure PVP\Hardcore PVE). Just examples im not stipulating anything. Who knows it could be directed towards a mass market. Though i believe there are enough people following them that any game they make will be well recieved. All im saying, is that WoW is an awesome game but its not the be **** all end **** all of MMO's. jesus christ. No matter what bioware makes, its going to be **** sick. You can judge that by their flawless track record of any game ever produced by them.

Honestly, I don't need another MMO. I have Lord of the Rings Online, which has me plenty happy at the moment. But, as long as they don't stop making single player RPGs...they're welcome to go ahead and move into the market in my opinion.

As long as they don't make the huge mistake of making KOTOR a MMORPG they'll do fine.

If anyone is going to beat out Blizzard, it would probably be Bioware. They know how to make a huge RPG, and if the reported technology is any indication, huge is what this game will be.

pretty much the greatest PC RPG dev group ever...coming to the MMO market, it's kind of sad and great all in one....sad in the sense that single-player RPGs are kind of falling by the wayside...and great in the sense that there might be a good quality MMO out there to keep me interested

And what exactly do you have to show by playing ANY video game? You washed your hands of MMOs 2 years ago, yet still keep track of them (obviously, since you read the article and replied) and wasted time posting a message that adds nothing to the conversation. Hmmm...

Even though the only BioWare game I played was KOTOR (tried NWN, but it didn't cut for me), I have a lot of faith in the company, if Mass Effect lives up to the hype (which it probably will), the game is gonna sell me a 360 for sure. Point in case is I don't like MMO, but one by BioWare might change that.

Everything that Bioware has done has been nothing less then solid gold... If anyone can make a next-gen MMORPG to trump the old giant (WOW) it will deffinately be the Bioware. They have the midas touch ; p

Cobra 5 - have you tried out Dungeons and Dragons Online? It doesn't do the "watch your character fight" thing - you move around during combat, can hit people you have not selected to attack with wild swings, and can dodge ranged attacks by grabbing some cover or moving around. In short, it's much more satisfying than typical MMO combat, and uses the D&D system, which is a plus in my book.

Should be interesting. I'm getting burned out on WoW anyways. I might check it out if it's good. All of Bioware's games have been great. I don't think they've made a dud yet.

1) The problem with MMOs is that you watch your character fight, instead of actually fighitng- that makes it SO boring for me, and I couldn't stick with any of them for more then a few weeks. I hope they change that. 2) BioWare's stuff has really started going downhill for me. I loved Baulder's Gate: Shadow's of Amn (And Throne of Bhaal) more then a man should love a game... after that though... neverwinter nights I didn't like... KOTOR was ok at first but got boring for me really fast...

I really don't want an official KOTOR MMORPG, but something kind of fictional like Mass Effect with a huge galaxy to play in with lots of planets and you can have like intergalactic battles on the planets and also in space would be awesome. And if you throw in a good story and premise then you might actually finally have a good MMORPG for the consoles.

I gotta say this MMORPG thing is getting out of hand. I agree with the creator of Tabula Rasa (which i plan to buy), most companies focus on just making a functional MMO without actually paying attention to the game play. That's exactly why I hated LOTRO. If this game has a hot bar for "skills" I'm gonna flip.

Man, I feel like a Bioware fanboy when I say I am pretty interested in this game. I have never wanted to play a MMORPG before, but if the maker of KOTOR and JE makes one...geez, I almost feel I have to try it. You know the story is going to be amazing.

Nice! I love BioWare because they are one of those few developers that you never have to worry about churning out a turd. Even thought I'm not really into MMORPG's I know many people are, so much respect to them, and I'm sure BIoWare will give them a great game.
