BioWare Wants To Rebuild Its Reputation, Promises "Highest Quality" Games Going Forward

BioWare's GM discusses the past year and what's next for the esteemed RPG studio.

BioWare general manager Gary McKay has published a blog post in which he outlined some of the notable events of the past year and laid out some high-level thoughts on where BioWare is headed next and what it is trying to achieve. McKay also touched upon how BioWare is pushing to restore its reputation and make games of the "highest quality" going forward.

McKay said 2021 was "another challenging year," due in part to the impact the pandemic has had on home and work life. "We've had to continue to think on our feet to adapt to changing circumstances. But despite all that, it has been an absolute joy to lead a studio with so many unbelievably talented people, a team that always pushes the envelope through innovation and an unflagging pursuit of quality," he said.

"Continuing to work under the pressure of a world pandemic has not been easy. We've had to adopt new tools, processes, and ways to communicate. We're all balancing personal time and work, and each person is dealing with their own unique situation," McKay added. "The biggest challenge continues to be the uncertainty of it all, which makes everyone's life more difficult and makes it hard to plan for the future."

Driven by the pandemic, BioWare is making changes to its workplace policies to offer workers greater flexibility. Like other developers, BioWare is embracing a hybrid model whereby some come to the office and others work remotely. In regards to BioWare's hiring practices, the company previously asked workers to relocate to Austin or Edmonton, but now the company's North America-based employees can work anywhere.

McKay called out the launch of the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition as a particularly proud moment for BioWare in 2021. "We're so proud to have released one of the highest-rated games on console, and the reception really underscores the value of striving for excellence and quality in every element of a game," McKay said.

As for BioWare's future, McKay said there is a lot to look forward to, beginning with The Old Republic's new Legacy of the Sith expansion, which releases on February 15. Beyond that, BioWare's teams continue to work on the previously announced new Dragon Age and Mass Effect titles. McKay said Mass Effect fans should examine the teaser art released on N7 Day in November for clues about the next game.

"If you look closely, there are a handful of hidden treats; by my count, there are at least five surprises, all of which point to an amazing future in the Mass Effect universe," McKay said.

For Dragon Age, McKay reiterated that the new title will be focused on single-player and giving players "choices that matter." The line about the game being focused on single-player is noteworthy given BioWare was apparently planning a multiplayer element for the game but ultimately decided to go another way.

Finally, McKay discussed how one of his responsibilities as GM of BioWare is on "rebuilding" the reputation of BioWare. This remains a "huge priority," he said.

"We are laser-focused on building back the trust of our fans and community, and we plan to do that by delivering the types of games that we are best known for and ensuring they are of the highest quality," McKay explained. Our mission is to 'Create worlds of adventure, conflict, and companionship that inspire you to become the hero of your story.' We want the launch of our games to be seminal moments in the industry. We want each game to earn the kind of reaction we've seen with Mass Effect Legendary Edition. We feel that we have the right people, the right creative focus, and the support from EA to deliver on the promise."

In other news, the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition came to EA Play and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate today, January 6.

now just maybe might be the time ea lets you make a good token game because your long run of crappy games has really hurt it. but you know even if ea lets you make 1 actually good game that will get a good sequel hype, they will squeeze and grind the hell out of that sequel.

like happened with dead space, mass effect 2 and some others. probably jedi fallen order was also that kind of token game. its a constant game of "we need to gain some player interest and fandom, so we can then squeeze them all out of their money". a sacrificial lamb of sorts.

what has helped ea in not needing to do so many of those is that other game houses have lowered their quality and started use ea methods. theres no longer option to choose the great konami or square enix or namco or ubisoft game instead of weak ea game. theyre all equally bad

When you promise the things that you don't know if you can deliver, you just dig your grave deeper. Let action speak, make a good game, then say that it happened because you were "laser-focused". But if you talk and don't deliver, it's even worse than just making a mediocre game without all these promises. The people still remember BW of the past and probably there is a good chance that one game can restore your fans' faith.

I like your vision sir....but it's not up to you or even the studio in the end.....unless EA grants you complete creative freedom (which I seriously doubt they will) ;it's going to be an uphill battle to make your vision a reality. I'm rooting for you though....

Hopefully EA realized that single player games sell from the Star Wars game that was pretty awesome and sold quite well.

Get out of the mindset that "we'll release it and fix it later" crap. Pretend you can't patch games. That should be for emergency, game breaking bugs. Not to finish development.

Last but not least... Let developers make the games they're good at making. Don't buy a world class RPG studio and have them make Mech Warrior Lite. Let them make the games they're known for, or don't buy the studios.

Would greedy daddy EA approve that?

IMO for that to happen they need to get away from EA.

EA is why so many good franchises went to crap after EA bought them

Actions speak louder than words.

When you morons allow your investors to push your releases before they are even ready to launch, it ruins your games. I will NEVER, EVER pre-order a game again. Let alone from EA or Bioware.

With Anthem, Mass Effect Andromeda, Battlefield 1, Battlefield 5, Battlefield 2042, Dragon Age, Battlefront. I could go on and on......two words......Eat ***t.

You guys are just upset because we, the consumers.... are now deciding to protest with our wallets.

Your sales have tanked horribly game after game. And you keep releasing half cocked games and expect better results on the "next game" with empty promises like this.

We the consumers are tired of being your beta testers. HIRE THEM BEFORE YOU RELEASE YOUR GAMES!!!!! Battlefield 2042 was literally a beta. Yes, I know this is Dice....But, Andromeda was the same if not, worse.

While I know some of these are from DICE as well. They still fall under the umbrella, parent company, EA. This ultimately should not be green lit if it is not ready to go.

A nice idea, but that's out of your hands when you're owned by EA and a lot of your best talent has already left in disgust.

IMO BioWare was the greatest game company of all time in their glory days. They have some of the best story telling RPGs around. It all went downhill starting with ME3. I would love to see them return to the old form but it’s hard to imagine it being possible.

It sounds good until all the executives stick their fingers into the mix. That's why Andromeda didn't live up to its full potential. They don't let the people making the game make it, they put their hands in and then say "It has to be out before XYZ, finished or not."

Studio bought by EA: Our games will be even better with EA. Developers made said studio great leaving not wanting to work for EA.

Games sucked under EA: We will restore your faith by making quality games with EA support.

Games still sucked under EA: You better buy the next release or EA won't let us making more of your favorite games.

Games still sucked under EA: EA closes said studio.

See the common thread.

That last part, having support of EA, is key to them accomplishing the goal. Because I think we've seen these major publishers try to fit developers underneath them into games they are not geared to make. EA has twice injured Bioware. First was with forcing them to use the Frostbite Engine to make Andromeda and then not giving them enough access to Dice engineers to make things work in the engine for RPGs and what Bioware wanted to accomplish. Andromeda had problems outside of that, but that contributed to a lot of development issues. Of course, Anthem was just an absolute disaster.

I'd love to see Bioware return to form and as long as their parent company allows them to do so, I think they can. Time will tell, but I hope we do get another amazing Mass Effect trilogy in the future. The only indication that EA might actually let Bioware do this is how EA let Respawn make Fallen Order as completely single player AND let them use the Unreal engine, instead of forcing them to use Frostbite.

@jinzo9988: It's the other way around. EA the plague carrier has a healthy tumor attached to itself called Bioware. And it's just a matter of time before they have it removed.....for good.

They don't need to prove themselves. They already did with Mass Effect 1, which is in the top 3 for greatest games of all time. They made their mark, then EA gobbled them up with ball throw money. EA isn't a developer or a producer, it's a mafia. They extort developers. They don't even consider themselves part of the gaming industry, it's just another front. There should be laws against such things but you all love capitalism so much I won't even bother arguing it. Hope you enjoy watching everything you ever loved decay right before your eyes over the greed of the few.

@Godly_Atheist: problem is; most people that worked there at the time ME1 (and all the other gems before it) was made have left the studio.......the question is, can they replicate the magic with the people they have there now; assuming EA grants them total freedom to try??

@Godly_Atheist: I've always thought of EA as more of a Necromancer. They capture any decent developer they can and slowly torture them to death. Then they raise the corpses as rotting zombies that they parade around as if they were still that decent developer. This is why you can still find the likes of Bioware shambling around mindlessly going through the motions of developing games.

@Godly_Atheist:

EA isn't Capitalism, though. It's Capital Communism; using money they sieze control of the means of production, and rule with an iron fist, deciding that you must do exactly as they say, and then taking what you have when their ideas which you were forced to live by do not provide the increase they demand. It is the exact same effect you see in any nation whose government is seized by Governmental Communism, the only difference being that EA utilizes Capitalism outside of itself for its own benefit, and then deprives the Free Market from everyone under its umbrella.

Also, how dare you malign the Mafia by comparing them to EA. The Mafia at least turns a profit and has some sort of code of honor to it.

When THE game series you're most consistently praised for, for 20 years, is given to someone else... Ouch

That said, Baldir's Gate 3 is in great hands, and they actually care about tactical + fun RPGs.

@Pyrosa: It's actually not. If you want a great true to form D&D game sure but it will never capture the spirit of BG 1 & 2. They're just using the name for hype. And before you get all defensive, consider why they wouldn't be open with the details of the game when it was announced and people asked.

Bioware isn't even a shadow of what it used to be over a decade ago. Releasing a great re-master of an already great trilogy isn't the same thing as making a new Mass Effect but hey, maybe they can pull it off? I really want to be optimistic about this but I just can't do it.

@izuro: They couldnt even release that properly, they had to be inspired from fan made mods. So basically EA/BW just borrowed ideas so they could quickly and cheaply rehash their product without paying more. Irnoically the preorder price was huge, and 2 days later it was like 50% reduction; Screams scam to me but whatever, plenty of pigeons to be plumed apparently

@cdragon_88: Lol. How sad to see someone who seems to have more of a problem with the gender or orientation of a few NPCs, than with the overall lack of quality.
It's not "woke" to represent certain minorities in your game, it is simply representing the world as it is.
And yes, I hate that forced inclusiveness that so many publishers show today, because it is dishonest and artificial, but that was never the case with Bioware, at least that criticism has always been baseless and nothing but a reveal of the reactionary nature of those claiming it.

No, the problem lies in the creative emptiness of the last few games, of failing to concentrate on the dev's strengths, instead of giving EA what they want, namely live-service and multiplayer bs.

@cdragon_88: If it sucks I assume you just wouldn’t buy it and be out nothing. If it’s good, and you’re writing it off now, you’ll miss out on a good game.
