Birds Of Prey Gets New Title After Its Poor Start At The Box Office

Introducing Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey.

In an attempt to draw in new viewers, the new DC Comics movie Birds of Prey has changed its name following its slow start at the box office. The movie is changing its theatrical name from Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) to Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, according to GameSpot sister site ComicBook.com. Note that this is only the theatrical name; the official title remains the same.

The name change is already visible through major American ticket-sellers like Regal Cinemas and AMC Theatres, though Warner Bros. has yet to officially comment on the change. The change is reportedly meant to boost SEO and generally make the film more recognizable. (It's also not the only movie to change its name post-release, although it is very uncommon.)

Now Playing: Birds of Prey Spoiler Review & Easter Eggs - Why It's Our Favorite Modern DC Film Yet

Birds of Prey star Margot Robbie, who plays Harley Quinn and is also a producer on the movie, recently foreshadowed this change in an appearance on the Hot Ones podcast.

Asked what the most nerve-wracking part of being a producer is, Robbie said it's watching the first-week box office numbers come in, because at that point, there is almost nothing you can do to improve the fortunes of a film. A marketing change might help things, but it might not be enough, she said. This very marketing change is now happening.

"The most nerve-wracking ... probably the box office," she said. "At that point, you can't do anything anymore. You can pivot your marketing strategy a little bit but really there's not a lot you can do. You just hope people like it. You and so many people have spent so much time on something that you just want people to like it, or even see it."

Birds of Prey, which is an R-rated movie, opened to $33.2 million in the US, which is many millions below projections. It's the worst start in the history of the DCEU movie franchise, but that's not a great comparison as Birds of Prey is also the first R-rated movie in the DCEU.

Birds of Prey's slow start came as a surprise, as the movie fared well with critics and carries a strong B+ CinemaScore rating.

In GameSpot's review of Birds of Prey, Meg Downey said, "It's the sort of kinetic, high energy romp that comes with built-in replay value, and proves exactly why Harley Quinn has become such an endearing, beloved character in the pop-culture pantheon. If this is the direction the DCEU is headed, the future's looking bright."

For more on Birds of Prey, find out more about the ending of the movie, whether or not Joker is in the movie, and the connection to Harley's first appearance in Suicide Squad.

People bash this movie because of politics. What politics were front loaded into this movie? I saw it the other night and took away very little if any political messages. THis was a dumb fun action flick, it was about as political as Bad Boys For Life or Fast and the Furious.

@calinks: thats kind of the point. It wasn’t the film, it was the marketing.

@calinks: That's the pathetic part - they have been marketing it like it is. And it absolutely blew up in their faces, AGAIN. Will they learn?

@calinks:

'Ewan McGregor is proud to be part of the ‘feminist film that tackled misogyny’

‘Yea, it’s about time. We were both really proud. We talked about it. We were both really proud to be involved in a film that was a feminist film that tackled misogyny.” ‘Not only in the sort of extreme ends of misogyny but also the everyday mild misogyny women have to put up with.’

Yes zerrooo political message there right?

@calinks: It's because weak men see a woman not begging for their attention and feel the need to lash out at the audacity of such a thing. There is literally zero outrage when a movie stars several men, but the butthurt is powerful with some of these guys. Honestly, I view them as an extremely vocal minority.

I agree with you about the movie. Went with some friends and had a good time. It was silly, but fun. Literally, NOT a movie to have a bunch of people ranting about some liberal agenda. These days I'm beginning to think that the whiners believe that "female" = "liberal agenda"

I love that you cultists are now at the point that people ignoring you is now proof of people ‘lashing out’. The jig is up. It’s over.

@Jendeh: Yeah that's it - you nailed it (sarcasm). Obviously you are the extremely vocal minority because most people (men, women, dogs and some cats) wouldn't waste their valuable life essence on this trash. My evidence is the box office numbers. Numbers don't lie. Your wokeness is impressive though.

@calinks: There is a very, very large group of angry men in the United States that will vocally complain whenever anything stars women and is made by women but is in a genre typically dominated by men. Women scare them.

@hosedandhappy: LMAO! Yes you're so scary. You in fact are the vocal minority. Look at the box office numbers. They don't lie. You live in an echo chamber where only those who agree with you are heard. That doesn't mean everyone is like you.

@forester057: Um, what? I think it's pretty clear from what I wrote that I understand that not everyone is like me.

Vocal minority? I'm not being vocal about anything. I'm just saying what's up, and your response just enforces what I said. Did you not understand what very, very large group meant?

@hosedandhappy: hold on, why is it always men that are the angry ones? On what basis do you say that? It doesn’t matter what you are, there’s a group for you if you want to be angry about something. . .

I’d argue that most people just want to be left alone. It doesn’t matter what race or sexual orientation one is. . .

However, typically the more liberal-leaning one is, the more “feels” they have about almost every topic. “How dare you not accept [name-your-issue]!” “Oh you don’t care about this cause we all support? You must just be an angry [man, woman, other, etc.].”

So the more pushy one seems about their cause, and not even “one” as in one person, but a movement or group even, media, etc. , i.e. “Hey everyone hey everyone! This is a female led cast, written by women only, directed by a woman, and produced by a woman, so everyone support it! You must see this b/c, well, women!!“, the more likely people are going to say “STFU and go away. We don’t care.” “We”, being everyone else who just doesn’t care about whatever your personal agenda is.

I’ll see an all-women cast movie, all-men cast movie, all-[name-your-ethnicity] movie. I don’t care, and hopefully most feel the same. If it’s a good movie, then that’s what it is, and the same is for the opposite.

But trying to make me care, or bitching and moaning about how I’m not caring enough or supporting whatever your cause is, well, good luck with that.

Dude, no one cares. When you grow up and learn that there were universally loved female protagonists decades before you ever saw tropes versus women will be the day you can be taken seriously.

@chriss_m: “Dude, no one cares.”

^This exactly^ Thank you.

As I was saying, most don’t care. But at least it seems, liberal society doesn’t just want you to tolerate whatever it is they’re pushing. You must whole-heartedly accept everything or else you’re a bigot, chauvinist, etc.

In reference to this movie, if it was terrible and there’s real legitimacy behind that claim, instead of hearing that person out, just like the comments here, you’re labeled and muted so to discredit your points. Because if you’re considered to be an awful person instead, well then no one has to argue you on the merits of your points.

Hell yea there are men that hate anything promoting women. There’s also feminists that simultaneously hate men. Of course there’s hate everywhere, but you shouldn’t be labeled or automatically lumped in with those people just bc you have an unpopular or critical opinion.

@smouche_mole: Based on ticket sales, I think most people are indeed saying they don't really care about Birds of Prey, but here, we've got a bunch of people who just can't stop ****ting on it. They aren't saying they don't care, they're actively mad about this movie, and I don't think it's going very far out on a limb to assume they're all male.

Nobody's saying there aren't groups of angry women roaming the internet, looking to be angry about politics, just that that isn't what's happening here. Here, it's dudes mad about a chick flick.

@mogan: LOL. Yeah. That thelma and louise movie really made me mad too. No it didn't because it didn't suck (that bad) and the movie had something to say. Are you seriously saying this movie is worth any of our time? Be honest with yourself and me.

@calinks: I think the politics came front loaded into the community. Birds of Prey might suck, I don't know, and I don't think most of the folks ****ting on it for "politics" do either, so the only way I'd be upset by its existence is if I wanted to be.

If this website is purely about clicks, why doesn’t it just pivot away from video games entirely?

@chriss_m: They partially did, several years ago when GameSpot started covering more general entertainment news. There's still a market for a gaming news site ... just not a large enough one to maintain a site of this size.

Here's the problem. Fans have somehow convinced producers that we wanted a Harley Quinn movie...but most guys don't want to see a HQ movie. The Joker was always the star. I remember when the character was introduced. She was definitely as nutty as her counterpart but she will always be known as The Joker's assistant. She's his assistant for crying out loud. Who needs a whole movie about someone's assistant especially if she doesn't have any business with The Joker during the entire film?

I can see it now. Birds of Iron: The Emancipation of One Pepper Pots...

As much as I love Gwyneth Paltrow, her character isn't enough to make me spend $40+ for a ticket and popcorn. Same for Margot Robbie.

And before some angry fem decides to call me sexist, I spent almost $100 taking both of my boys to see Alita: Battle Angel last year and that's not the only movie I've enjoyed with a female lead (Columbiana, Tombraider, Aeon Flux and The Long Kiss Goodnight says hi).

So please...don't go there.

When you market your movie as misandrist, you shouldn't be surprised when a large section of your potential audience doesn't show up.

Desperately slapping Harley Quinn's name on the title won't save it.

@Thanatos2k:I feel kind of bad for anyone who watched the trailer and thought the movie was misandrist at all.

Like, how do you manage to survive in a world when you think women hate you every time they're not being controlled by a man?

There's nothing misandrist, preachy, or woke about the Birds of Prey. Grow up people, a movie starring women, made by women isn't out to get you and isn't scary.

@hosedandhappy: Even if the movie itself doesn't have it, the interviews and marketing given before release indicated it was. One day they'll figure out this is not a successful business move.

Also, are you addressing me with those characterizations? I hope not.

If the logic of this site is anything to go by, given that this movie did so poorly financially it must be absolutely terrible.

I come to this conclusion because whenever I talked about how childish, stupid, generic, and lame the Marvel movies were, I was always met with the equally generic "tWo BilLiOn BoX oFfIcE" as if it is some sort of proof that the movies aren't total jokes, that have essentially already been pushed out of notable film history already.

See kids? Money DOESN'T mean a film is good or bad, AT ALL. It doesn't matter how much it makes in any way whatsoever.

@basketballfan: I saw it, it was pretty entertaining honestly. I think maybe the marketing and title of the film confused audiences, or it's getting a slow start off the bad rep of Suicide Squad.

The fight choreography was awesome.

Probably has nothing to do with the schizophrenic editing and it being rated R.

Should have had Tarantino just write and direct instead of just being a rip off.

lol, I blame the ads department on this one, it's like they choose every single bad decision to push people away. A shame, because although it's not a great movie, it's kind of fun. Well, although Ewan failed to teach us a lesson I sure hope he learned his.
