Birds Of Prey Gets New Title After Its Poor Start At The Box Office

Introducing Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey.

In an attempt to draw in new viewers, the new DC Comics movie Birds of Prey has changed its name following its slow start at the box office. The movie is changing its theatrical name from Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) to Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, according to GameSpot sister site ComicBook.com. Note that this is only the theatrical name; the official title remains the same.

The name change is already visible through major American ticket-sellers like Regal Cinemas and AMC Theatres, though Warner Bros. has yet to officially comment on the change. The change is reportedly meant to boost SEO and generally make the film more recognizable. (It's also not the only movie to change its name post-release, although it is very uncommon.)

Now Playing: Birds of Prey Spoiler Review & Easter Eggs - Why It's Our Favorite Modern DC Film Yet

Birds of Prey star Margot Robbie, who plays Harley Quinn and is also a producer on the movie, recently foreshadowed this change in an appearance on the Hot Ones podcast.

Asked what the most nerve-wracking part of being a producer is, Robbie said it's watching the first-week box office numbers come in, because at that point, there is almost nothing you can do to improve the fortunes of a film. A marketing change might help things, but it might not be enough, she said. This very marketing change is now happening.

"The most nerve-wracking ... probably the box office," she said. "At that point, you can't do anything anymore. You can pivot your marketing strategy a little bit but really there's not a lot you can do. You just hope people like it. You and so many people have spent so much time on something that you just want people to like it, or even see it."

Birds of Prey, which is an R-rated movie, opened to $33.2 million in the US, which is many millions below projections. It's the worst start in the history of the DCEU movie franchise, but that's not a great comparison as Birds of Prey is also the first R-rated movie in the DCEU.

Birds of Prey's slow start came as a surprise, as the movie fared well with critics and carries a strong B+ CinemaScore rating.

In GameSpot's review of Birds of Prey, Meg Downey said, "It's the sort of kinetic, high energy romp that comes with built-in replay value, and proves exactly why Harley Quinn has become such an endearing, beloved character in the pop-culture pantheon. If this is the direction the DCEU is headed, the future's looking bright."

For more on Birds of Prey, find out more about the ending of the movie, whether or not Joker is in the movie, and the connection to Harley's first appearance in Suicide Squad.

how do you change a film's title after it's released? Do you recall every roll of film, edit it and send it back?

Well no one forgot Suicide Squad and how terrible it was. Who would want a sequel? Be it good or not, it's still something no one wanted lol.

@Baconstrip78: you keep telling yourself that.

Ghostbusters 2016

Birds of prey

Doctor who

Batwoman

Just a few off the top of my head. They're all woke and they've all failed miserably.

You can blame it on suicide squad if you want but you are still sticking your fingers in your ears going "lalalala i can't hear you"

It's pathetic. You and your ilk may be living in a bubble where everything woke is fine and dandy but in the real world normal people don't like it and it fails as a result. Get your head out of your arse and stop being so delusional.

If they had just done a marketing campaign that let the public know it existed and then released it and let people make up their own minds it would have done ok. But telling people what to think of it before they see it just reeks of insecurity and turns people off. If you don't have enough faith in your performance to let it speak for itself why should I give it a chance?

So does this mean that Disney can go and change the names of each movie in the latest Star Wars trilogy so that they would no longer be official episodes? Because I wouldn’t exactly say “no” to that idea outright.

And if you don’t think for one second that Disney has considered it in order to remake the episodes from scratch and make even more money, you’re out of your mind.

DC/WB just give it up already. Stick to animated movies, because live action on the big screen just not working for you.

@bat725: No, Joker is the first R rated movie to make over a billion dollars; it's not near the most profitable movie of all time. Joker wasn't even the highest grossing movie of last year.

@mogan: Compared to how much joker cost to make and how much it grossed, it actually is one of the most profitable in the genre. A ~70 million dollar budget produced a 1 billion dollar film.

@bat725: Not DCEU. It’s easy to make one movie. Nobody has ever done what the MCU has done though, make a dozen successful and connected movies that culminate in something like endgame/infinity war. DCEU tried and flopped miserably, losing their Superman and Batman in the process.

@theguyskt: What agenda? Should they have changed the characters to shotgun toting bros out on a hunting trip with their hound dogs and bibles where they sit around a fire talking about how wonderful fracking is?

@externalpower43: The "agenda" is that women exist and can star in movies. It's all it ever boils down to when you get past the bull crap and easily debunked arguments.

It isn't the name that is keeping people away in droves. Its the subject matter or the anticipated non-entertainment value of the movie that is the problem. Thanks for ruining my childhood Harley crush. Its over between us Harl. Get woke go broke should be the title of this garbage.

@forester057: It's a great movie. Sorry you're 12-year-old masturbatory fantasies were apparently "ruined" by a movie full of attractive women. Not sure how that computes, but I'm sure you have a lifetime of loneliness ahead to contemplate that while jacking off to cartoons.

Also, once again, Marvel is woke af. Broke isn't exactly the word I'd use to describe them, but as someone lamenting over his cartoon wank material being spoiled, I don't expect logic to override your seemingly rhyme based intelligence.

This is just proof that many people just don't want to see a Harley Quinn movie. After how bad Suicide Squad was, I don't blame them.

I think DC has only made a handful of great movies in the last 20 years: The Dark Knight, Wonder Woman and the standalone Joker film- everything else was meh. Meanwhile Marvel continues to produce hit after hit.

@mighty-lu-bu: I liked the idea of Suicide Squad, but the whole middle of that movie was them walking from point A to point B in dark alleys. Gripping cinema!

Actually the trailers make the movie look bad, that's probably why it had a slow start. We'll see where it goes from here.

Even the Joker was presented in a way which made the potential audience sympathetic and intrigued. In addition than the main character's status as a villain, anti hero, or whatever, the trailers for this movie were awful and made it look like a cash-in based off of a universally panned movie.

If the movie is good it may suffer the same fate of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, a movie that was ruined before release thanks to it's trailers too.

Decent enough movie, but it wasn't a BoP movie. It was a Harley Quinn movie, they should've just called it that, and called the sequel (which now probably wont get made) Birds of Prey.

Also, rated R. Why? The endless F-bombs and tone-deaf sexual violence was unnecessary.

They dropped the ball with this movie as soon as they decided to create a birds of prey movie with both the marketing and the title focused on one harleen quinzel. They should have made a Harley Quinn and the Gotham Sirens movie if they wanted to do that, black canary deserves better than to be sidelined in a movie about a group she's actually a part of.

@jbreez00: Well how about putting that joker guy in the movie? The most famous villain in comic book would have save the movie but no somehow they thought that Harley would be enough to sell tickets. You have to be realistic and trying to make a movie about just a bunch of girls in this day and age is not gonna work. They needed a powerful character to sell tickets and that was the joker. The actors they pick were awful too, the only known actor in there was Margot Robbie and that's it. You would think that they would have learn their lesson after that Ghost buster female edition disaster that went no where and not take a chance with this movie but no they learn nothing and it happen again. They don't fallow comic book story Harley Quinn isn't even in the Comic book Birds of pray.

@angrycreep: I don't know, the joker was in suicide squad and it also didn't make what they were hoping for... But that's probably just because Jared Leto looked so damned stupid they had to cut half his scenes. This could have been their Deadpool equivalent but they blew it by catering to an audience that doesn't actually watch these movies instead of the people that actually do and showed up opening weekend.

@jbreez00: He was there for 2 minutes. That's not been in a movie. So no he wasn't in that movie because 2 minutes of joker is not been in a movie. If he really would have been in that movie i'm sure that movie would have done way better than it did.

@angrycreep: Doesn't matter how long he was in it, he was in the promotional material and the movie was still considered a dud. He wasn't in the movie last year for very long either but Joaquin managed to make the scenes memorable when he did have the makeup on.

@jbreez00: Heck you talking about promotional material? People knew that he was not gonna be in that movie and practically he was just gonna be there doing some sneak appearance. I knew that a whole month before the movie was in theaters. That was one of the worst kept secret where everybody knew except jbreez00 who didn't have a clue.

@doomsdayhell01: I'm not talking about interviews or anything when I say promotional material, I'm talking about the trailers and pictures from the film, he was in those. Now him not being in the movie for long was probably for the best because... Well look at him, dude has a scene where he laughs into his hand with a damn mouth tattoo on it.

@jbreez00: Actually it does matter and it was very clear that he's part in the movie was very limited and that did turn a lot heads away and in this case million faces away. The reviews came rushing in and joker wasn't part of that movie and people knew that before the movie was even in theaters and in top of that bad reviews. In the other movie case it was a completely deferent thing people turn out to watch a man going from a regular man to a joker and he was there regardless if he was not the joker the entire movie.
