Birds Of Prey Has Worst-Ever Box Office Opening For A DCEU Movie

A slow start.

Birds of Prey opened to a smaller-than-expected box office number that makes it the worst opening ever for a DC Extended Universe film. The movie pulled in $33.2 million in the US for its opening weekend, and that's the lowest-ever for DC's recent film universe. [Update: In response to this, the movie's title has been changed to add the lead character's more recognizable name, thus dubbing it Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey.]

It's not the absolute worst of all-time for a DC comic book movie, however as the Josh Brolin 2010 movie Jonah Hex only made $5.3 million for its US opening. But it's the lowest for the DCEU that began in 2013 with Man of Steel. (The Joaquin Phoenix Joker movie, which made more than $1 billion at the box office, is separate from the DCEU).

Now Playing: Birds of Prey Spoiler Review & Easter Eggs - Why It's Our Favorite Modern DC Film Yet

The Birds of Prey box office opening is well below the $50 million-$55 million it was projected to make, and also below Warner Bros.' own more conservative $45 million figure. Worldwide, Birds of Prey has now made $81.2 million worldwide, which is significantly below the $110 million that Warner Bros. was expecting.

Deadline, which supplied all the box office numbers, reports that Birds of Prey will likely struggle to reach $100 million at the US box office. One finance source told the site, "Overall, it's bad."

Birds of Prey had a $97 million budget, which comes down to $84 million with California's tax credits applied. This does not include marketing expenses, however.

Deadline also reports that the first cut of Birds of Prey "tested really poorly." As such, DC movie executive Walter Hamada ordered reshoots that got the movie in a better place.

Birds of Prey carries an R-rating and it released in February, and both factors could have limited the film's box office results. By comparison, the PG-13 rated Suicide Squad, the film that Birds of Prey is spun off from, made $133 million in the US for its opening weekend during summer 2016.

Birds of Prey's slow start came as a surprise, as the movie fared well with critics and carries a strong B+ CinemaScore rating.

In GameSpot's review of Birds of Prey, Meg Downey said, "It's the sort of kinetic, high energy romp that comes with built-in replay value, and proves exactly why Harley Quinn has become such an endearing, beloved character in the pop-culture pantheon. If this is the direction the DCEU is headed, the future's looking bright."

For more on Birds of Prey, find out more about the ending of the movie, whether or not Joker is in the movie, and the connection to Harley's first appearance in Suicide Squad.

Harley Quinn is the number one henchman of a Batman villain. She is not a main character. She is not a hero. She isn't something to build your movie around.

Well, another to toss onto the get woke go broke pile. You'd think they would learn by now.

@realguitarhero5: Black Panther was introduced in a Captain America movie, and was itself not terrible. Also the content of the movie itself wasn't woke, nor was the marketing before release designed to insult part of its target audience. It's a perfect example of how to not fail. This movie is yet another example of how to fail.

Nobody is discussing the elephant in the room. Core audience for DC movie are male not the female. If Joker can earn $1 billion why can't Birds of Prey. Because very few male are interested in a movie which shows woman power and its not the first time Ghostbusters has the same fate.

From last few years the feminist are selling their snake oil under the label of SJW and Hollywood is the biggest buyer.

@MigGui: There was nothing feminist or preachy about Kill Bill. It was just a good movie.

Wonder Woman was borderline.

But Captain Vagina - how many tickets did Disney end up buying for their own film again?

@sn0man: it’s hard to make a good movie, it requires talent. But you basically said men don’t like powerful women in leading roles, and I beg to differ. Most films of female leads are “feminist movies”, some of them well done, like Kill Bill which is a badass woman killing whoever wronged her including the father of her child (also look how all the strong villains are women and how they claim their strength against womanizers), some of them terribly executed like the Charmed reboot which screams “girl power!” every two minutes.

@zafar1981: Men don't have a problem with strong women or kickass women in movies, what we have a problem with is the movie yelling at us, WOMAN ARE JUST AS STRONG AS MEN. NO . . . NO . . . STRONGER THAN ALL MEN! MEN ARE SCUM! Unless you're a father figure, then you're ok . . . I guess . . . but then you're probably secretly a cheater, making you just another piece of garbage man. ALL MEN ARE SCUM! Oh, I already said that. EQUALITY MEANS WE'RE BETTER THAN YOU!

I really enjoyed this movie for it's successes and I would recommend it. My friend and I had a good time seeing it and we thought Margot Robbie did a great job at representing Harley (drugs and excessive tats aside). She managed to find a nice balance between the cartoon voice and a more natural one and it was used fairly well. The fights were typically well choreographed and fun to watch.

However, there were also a lot of issues:

- The villain/s sucked (sorry Ewan)

Under the heading of don't make this a battle of the sexes

- Too much - girls kick ass, and by ass I mean mens asses

- Too much - male incompetence

- Too much - men are all bad guys (All men. No seriously, all men)

- Suffers from team fights losing impact (a common problem in this genre)

**personal** - Kinda wish Margot went through the super hero training regiment. (Harley's in crazy good shape and has the legs and ass to back it)

Outside of the movie itself there needed to be a worthwhile trailer to actually pull in crowds. That being said the lack of a quality trailer enabled me to go into this blind.

The name sucked. It did nothing to let you know it was the Harley Quinn movie. It also implied it was a buddy movie which it really wasn't. Honestly I would have never known it was out if it weren't for my curiosity as to why a documentary was in the largest auditorium at the theaters.

I hope that this movie gets a follow up. I think Harley (Margott) can manage on her own provided we get someone worthwhile as her nemesis. I would be more than happy seeing her separated from The Joker until we get a Cartoon (Mark Hamill) eque villain worthy of being by her side.

I hope good word of mouth turns it around. It's really one of the better DCEU movies, leaning more towards action-movie-parody (with some amazing fight choreography) than traditional super-hero movie. I loved it!

@tsunami2311: No, the reviewer said she thought it was one of the best DC movies, this report is saying it made the least movie in its opening weekend. Some folks like Birds of Prey a whole lot, but not too many people went out to see it.

Let's make a movie that applies to less than 1% of the population and set the productions and advertising budgets to where we need a $200m box office just to break even. What's could possibly go wrong???

I'm 100 percent sure the dumpster fire trailers sewered this movie. I honestly beleive the movie itself was good but the marketing was horrendous and once again pushed the female ensemble gimmick then actualy making it look cool. I didn't even know it was R rated until I read an early review.

The DC Universe of movies is so beyond screwed up at this point, their best bet is to just go ahead and put the entire saga on hiatus for a about 5 years and then bring it back and start over from scratch. Thankfully we still have the movies that exist outside the DCEU like Joker, and hopefully The Batman will be good.

I think there's two problems, one is simply superhero fatigue after Endgame. Sure, the second Spiderman did very well, but it's Spiderman. The other problem is the DCEU itself; when you have trash like Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, or more relevantly, Suicide Squad in your backlog, is anyone surprised audiences are wary of DC movies? Even Wonder Woman which is regarded as their best effort was an okay movie.

A standalone Harley Quinn movie could work, but someone decided to make this another ensemble movie.

Sorry but this movie falls in the same line as the all female ghostbusters, all female Oceans movie, etc. It just doesnt work. No one saying that all female movies cant do well, its just that it doesnt employ dominance and believability. Gender roles arent all bad. Taking away the roles of male n female can be toxic.

@jsprunk: A movie flopping doesn't mean it's bad. Once Upon A Time In The West flopped both commercially and critically at the time of release and now it's widely regarded as a masterpiece.

Likewise more recent movies, predominantly aimed at men, like Dredd also flopped, but regains a cult following.

I'd imagine the problem was marketing. The first i heard about this movie was yesterday, when i was actually at the cinema, none of my friends had heard of it either.

And i've seen every DC and Marvel movie released.

The trailers looked like crap, Suicide Squad sucked horribly, and she simply does not deserve her own movie in my opinion. The whole thing is a bunch of nobodies. Also sorry but it looks a bit too "girl powery" for me. Like where's the diversity? Most comic movies these days like GOTG, Avengers, Black Panther, X-Men etc. all have both strong male and female characters. This looks like it was aimed at 13 year old girls. No wonder they lost money with their R rating. Hard pass on this Spice Girls on steroids garbage. Also shout-out to Ghostbusters and Charlie's Angels. Keep flopping away.

Take a B grade ex Neighbours actress in Robbie and no matter how much people pretend she is A grade she is just not that good an actress. Especially to be a lead in a movie that is very much character acting focused. Plus people are just sick to death of women are better than men movies that are trying to dominate Hollywood and failing miserably. Even most women hate that crap so that really should be enough for them to stop being made and promoted.

@deviltaz35: Ironically thought in this particular film she is okay as Harley Quinn, her dialogue can be annoying at times which is in tune with the character but she is the only bright spot in this TURD of a film. also the film is being praised for its Acton but other than the police station fight in the basement all the other scenes are forgettable , the roller blade scene was in every trailer to i expected to see it.
Also letsnot get into the logci of her singled handedly whipping out a police staiton full of on duty ARMED cops with just a beanbag gun.

@m3ph1st0: Exactly. Everyone out on the street and online saw this coming even when the production began. They even sent in a second director to come in and try to save it. Race swamping characters and making character gay just to push a representation identity. Gamespot gave it a 9. LOL. That is the biggest cringe right there.
