Black Ops 6 Has An Option To Pay For Better Audio

For $20 you can unlock a personalized audio profile to use with Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6.

In the week of its release, it's been revealed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has an option to pay $20 for personalized spatial audio. The third-party audio tool is built into Black Ops 6's settings menu, and will also be coming to Warzone with Season 1.

A screenshot of the audio menu was shared by COD content-creator Omeqa on X (formerly Twitter), showing a pop-up offering a free trial for Embody's Immerse spatial audio. The service creates a personalized spatial audio profile based on players' head and ear shape, and costs $20 for five years.

The paid service is part of the Enhanced Headphone Mode setting, for which a follow-up screenshot is displayed prominently in the game's audio options. The setting uses a universal profile by default, with the option to pay for a personalized one.

Black Ops 6 isn't the only game to offer personalized spatial audio through Embody, but it's one of only a few to currently partner with the company. Final Fantasy XIV has offered personalized audio through Embody for a few years, while Cyberpunk 2077 added the option earlier this year.

While Embody isn't the only third-party company out there offering personalized spatial audio for games, it's rare to see the option built into the game's menus. Unlike other third-party services, Embody's spatial audio is developed in tandem with each game's developers--however this means you have to pay for a separate "Immerse Gamepack" for every game you want to use it with.

While Embody's Gamepacks aren't overly expensive for a five-year period, the jury is out on whether they're worth paying for at all. Many Final Fantasy XIV players aren't impressed with the audio offering, according to Reddit posts on the subject, and some have pointed out that what Embody provides is not too different from Dolby Atmos.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 arrives on October 25, with preloading available now. If you do want to check out Embody's personalized audio options, it's compatible with the PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 editions of the game.

This is nothing new. You have to pay for DTS and other audio formats for headphones, usually a one time cost that can be used for any game. But I guess people will make a big deal out of it because they don't realize people have being paying for enhanced audio for years. Hardware makers and game developers are not going to pay for a subscription to 3rd party apps for you. Expecting them to would just make the initial cost of the product more expensive for everyone.

I'm pretty sure the sound is just fine without paying for a 3rd party audio profile. Good job the game's on Gamepass, so I guess 20 dollars isn't too bad, but still, for PS5 users, paying £69.99 or more is bad enough.

In my day, we were happy with the song that came with Tetris on the Gameboy.

I just came here to get that song stuck in everyone's head.

Chill out and learn to read, guys. Activision isn’t charging for this. It’s a 3rd party program that costs money. You can simply purchase and use it through COD. As much as I loathe COD, this one isn’t their doing. They’re just advertising a 3rd party product. It’s not necessary or detrimental to the game in any way, shape or form.

It is dumb, though. I’ll never pay for an audio profile.

I'm need to save up for that. Apparently if you don't get this you can't hear gunfire or footsteps. Have to depend on your teammates to tell you if someone behind you.

I presume this feature just costs money and someone has to pay. ATVI is just being cheap and making the option available but having the user foot the bill. Will be interesting to see if the audio difference is enough that it gives an advantage to players who pay for it by say, amplifying footstep sounds.

@gamerboy100: They're not at all. You're paying for an audio profile customized to your specific ear shape from a 3rd party company. Stuff like this is everywhere, you just usually have to find it yourself. Not really sure why people are having such a problem with this. Guess it's the just ignorant internet lifestyle that requires you to find 42 things a day to complain about or you whither and die.

A Dolby license, good headphones, better controllers or mice all cost money and give you an advantage.

Activision is also footing the bill to give every player access to a universal 3D sound profile from Embody.

@hosedandhappy: Well, that sounds like something that maybe should have been mentioned in the article, then.

@cyrezeraser: Actually, it is not Activision that is charging the customer as other posts are saying, it is a third party that is charging the customer. For some it may be a purchase and for others maybe not.

@lonewolf1044: no, just partnering with a 3rd party, putting it directly. I game, and you know damned well they get a cut of each sub sold due to the fact it's "in the game."
