Black Panther Movie Will Be "Grittier" Than Most Marvel Films, Says Star

While Marvel's movies have plenty of drama, the common perception is that they are lighter and funnier than DC's darker releases. However, the star of the upcoming Black Panther has now revealed that the much-anticipated film will adopt a different tone to many of the other movies in the Marvel universe.

In a recent interview with CBR, Chadwick Boseman explained that Black Panther was a different hero to the fast-talking, quip-laden likes of Iron Man or Ant-Man, and this would influence the film. "For me, most of the time the darker superhero movies are the ones that I gravitate towards, that I love the most," he said. "I'm glad that the tone of [Black Panther] may be a little grittier."

"I just wanted to establish that from the beginning, that that's what we were doing," he continued, referring to the character's first appearance in this year's Captain America: Civil War. "That that's what I intend to do. I feel like we'll end up in a place that I've always wanted to be when I look at superhero movies. Those are the ones I like the most. It's exciting to do that."

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station) has also spoken about the difficulties involved in keeping a darker Marvel film within the studio's established universe. "It's a specific challenge," he told EW in May. "What Marvel's doing, and what you see a lot of studios doing now that Marvel has done it so successfully, is making content that exists in a particular universe, where the characters tie in and crossover.

"I think that's a great creative challenge to me--to make this movie as personal as possible. It's going to be my most personal movie to date, which is crazy to say, but it's completely the case. I'm obsessed with this character and this story right now, and I think it's going to be very unique and still fit into the overall narrative that they're establishing."
