Black Widow Movie: Marvel Has Reportedly Met With 65 Potential Directors Already

Marvel is reportedly being "extremely thorough" in its search.

Marvel is apparently working very hard to find a director for the upcoming and unconfirmed Black Widow standalone movie. According to Variety editor Justin Kroll, Marvel has met with more than 65 directors for the gig. "Marvel [is] being extremely thorough on this one," Kroll said.

Kroll's tweet follows a Hollywood Reporter story from last week that claimed Marvel had met with a number of female directors about the job, including Deniz Gamze Erguyen (Mustang), Amma Asante (A United Kingdom), and Chloe Zhao (The Rider), among others. A search for a director remains ongoing, apparently.

Now Playing: Black Widow's 10 Most Badass Moments

In January, a report claimed that Marvel had hired TiMER writer Jac Schaeffer to pen the script for the unannounced and untitled Black Widow movie.

Scarlett Johansson has played Black Widow in a number of MCU films, including Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, and most recently Avengers: Infinity War. She's also going to be in the fourth Avengers movie, which is due out in May 2019.

In October 2016, Johansson said time might not be on her side to play Black Widow in a standalone movie. "If I did it, I'd have to do it while I still actually wanted to wear a skin-tight catsuit," she explained. "I don't know how much longer that's going to be." In 2017, Johansson said she had already spoken to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige about the movie and that the initial discussions were positive. What's been keeping the movie from happening is the timing and schedules for Marvel and Johansson's other projects.
