Blizzard Cancels Next-Gen MMO Titan

"We didn't find the fun," Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime says.

World of Warcraft developer Blizzard Entertainment has canceled its next-generation MMO, Titan. Mike Morhaime, the co-founder and president of Blizzard, confirmed the game's cancellation today.

"We had created World of Warcraft, and we felt really confident that we knew how to make MMOs," Morhaime told Polygon. "So we set out to make the most ambitious thing that you could possibly imagine. And it didn't come together."

"We didn't find the fun," Morhaime added. "We didn't find the passion. We talked about how we put it through a reevaluation period, and actually, what we reevaluated is whether that's the game we really wanted to be making. The answer is no."

"It was hard when we canceled Warcraft Adventures. It was hard when we canceled StarCraft Ghost. But it has always resulted in better-quality work" -- Morhaime

Titan has been in development for years, though Blizzard has never actually announced the game in an official capacity. Despite that, the company confirmed in December 2010 that it was indeed called Titan, though this was believed to only be a working title.

The game's official cancellation today comes after Blizzard removed all mention of the game from its careers page back in August 2013, suggesting the company was moving away from the project.

Blizzard senior vice president of story and franchise development, Chris Metzen, said the decision to cancel Titan was "excruciating." Morhaime agreed that shutting down development on the game was a "really, really" hard decision to make. However, he says he's made these decisions before, and the end result is always positive.

"It was hard when we canceled Warcraft Adventures. It was hard when we canceled StarCraft Ghost," he said. "But it has always resulted in better-quality work."

Metzen added: "The discipline of knowing when to quit is important. We were losing perspective and getting lost in the weeds a little. We had to allow ourselves to take that step back and reassess why the hell we were doing that thing in the first place."

Though Titan is canceled, Morhaime said Blizzard hasn't closed the door entirely on making another MMO someday. "I wouldn't say no to ever doing an MMO again," Morhaime said. "But I can say that right now, that's not where we want to be spending our time."

Blizzard will continue to support World of Warcraft, of course, which is now in its tenth year of continued operation. "My hope personally is that we'll support it forever," Metzen said.

At the end of May 2013, Blizzard confirmed that Titan was undergoing "large design and technology changes." Later that summer, Morhaime said during an Activision Blizzard earnings call that Titan may not be subscription-based, or even an MMO.

"We're in the process of selecting a new direction for the project and re-envisioning what we want the game to be," Morhaime said at the time. "While we can't talk about the details yet, it is unlikely to be a subscription-based MMORPG."

it feels like the bigger the company gets, it less its willing to take risks, it becomes a thing about reputations and maximizing profit. who knows what TITAN actually look like? man blizzard should grow some balls and make new games other than starcraft, diablo, and warcraft. you got enough money to buy a country but too afraid to make a new game? thats pretty lame.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not sure about your age dude, but blizzard was company like that from the day it was started. They probably have more unreleased titles than released ones. You actually must have a huge balls to kill project after investing time and money into it for years...

Can we at least see what it looked like? Maybe the players should decide if it was fun! Throw it on a beta server as is and see what people say about it

the ONLY PROBLEM with WOW is that it is childish and casual. I bet 99% of people waiting Titan expected an mmo that isn't like that.

<< LINK REMOVED >> how is it childish and casual? because it has creative graphic design and doesnt require mindless grinding like korean MMOs? thats not what makes wow bad. they are making the game progressively more linear (vanilla was almost a sandbox game compared to what we have now) and are dumping social aspects of the game. You can raid without even being in a guild and talking to people nowadays.

I think it's great news TBH. I was never much into MMOs, so I'd rather have them move their focus to a new RTS project, preferably Warcraft 4. WC3 is 11 years old now and I feel WC4 would make a serious impact. I really hope they take that direction.

Seeing Blizz's track record as of late, I bet TITAN was amazing. It's just the people at blizz are to jaded to know what the people want.

Devs were saying wait it's not subscription based? Wait you can't spend real money on cosmetics. Wait it has a working auction house. People aren't going to want a functioning game they want shit that we have to fix six months down the line this is unacceptable.

I use to play WoW years ago and was blown away by it....tried F2P games after that because didn't want to keep sub for WoW.

for the last 4 yrs i have tried this game and that when it comes to MMO's and i am sick of the genre. then i tried the closed beta(which i didn't pay for) of Archeage, and i can't stop playing it. graphics, physics and just about everything else is some of the best MMO gaming i have done since i lost interest in WoW. just the water alone is simply amazing....mounts too.

Titan was just a facade to employ Blizzard family & friends with all the extra wealth that WoW was generating. Now that WoW is seeing a decline in player base, the luxury of keeping random people employed on a project with no deadline, announcement (or proof for that matter) is over.

Titan was a charity. Either that or it was similar to Destiny and well... Destiny = FAIL

They realized they need to spend craploads of time and money to make a game that can make WoW players move on to Titan while they can still milk them with new expansions that require much less work.

Stop subbing and buying crappy expansions they'll release a new MMO in a heartbeat.

So considering blizzard takes like 5 years to make a game....we won't see anything from them until almost 2020? Except that other starcraft expansion pack.

You're an idiot.

Vanilla was crap. If you weren't in the top 5 raiding guilds you never seen any epic loot. Players were forced to play a certain spec or you didn't raid. And you had to spend 2 hours to get a 40 man raid even started.

BC made WoW the perfect game. It fixed all those problems and then some. It even got to the point that you could pug raids that were quite successful most of the time and also much easier to get into.

I played the old WOW but there were also elements I liked from BC, WOTLK, and Mists. To be honest Mists was the more fun version of the game but people like you build up hate before they even try things.

It's probably not very motivating when people are riding around on $25 Rainbow Unicorns in a game that isn't even out yet (Heroes of the Storm). Plus the people like myself who still play World Of Warcraft are almost blind in their dedication to that game.

There has also been a paradigm shift in what types of games people want to play, namely Craft-em-ups (Minecraft), Moba's and "Free To Play" games. I've also noticed that high production values are no longer important to game sales.

this is the problem with blizzard. the staff go to work each day with no goals, no deadlines and no direction whatsoever. they experiment and work on small projects until something "sticks" and only pursue something if they "feel" like it. even established franchises such as diablo and star craft take 10 years of development time to complete because they have no clear idea what the game should be and can drag it out needlessly and endlessly. this company has serious problems with how they do business and are one of the most wasteful and inefficient companies in the business with regards to budgets and human resources. if you enjoy waiting 10 years for a game with no confirmation that it will even release, then blizzard is the company for you!
