Blizzard confirms 'large design and technology changes' for Titan

Developer confirms World of Warcraft follow-up undergoing major overhaul.

Blizzard Entertainment has issued a statement regarding yesterday's claim that its World of Warcraft follow-up--codenamed Titan--was being sent back to the drawing board.

No Caption Provided

"We've always had a highly iterative development process, and the unannounced MMO is no exception. We've come to a point where we need to make some large design and technology changes to the game," the company said in a statement to Kotaku.

"We're using this opportunity to shift some of our resources to assist with other projects while the core team adapts our technology and tools to accommodate these new changes," the statement goes on. "Note that we haven't announced any dates for the MMO."

Yesterday's report claimed the Titan development team was cut from 100 to 30, with the 70 displaced staffers not let go, but rather reassigned to other projects inside the company. The report also suggested Titan would not be brought to market before 2016.

Blizzard Entertainment has been at work on Titan for years now. The game was playable more than two years ago, with company COO Paul Sams singing its praises thoroughly.

"We're playing it already. It is a total ball to play," Sams said at the time. "We think that the reach of that product is greater than anything that we've done before. We're very excited about that. I believe that it's the type of game that will have a very long life, much like World of Warcraft has."

Blizzard Entertainment's current MMO, World of Warcraft, is the biggest subscription-based MMO on the market. It launched in 2004 and had 8.3 million subscribers at the end of March, down from a peak playerbase of 12 million in 2010.

Blizzard: What you need to do is this:

Make a game where players who play are all unique. I know you might say its impossible. But it isn't really. Uniqueness comes from the lore behind the player -> The lore comes from the quests -> the quests come from the player who chooses them -

Think of bread crumbs across the whole map and when you combine these bread crumbs they form a totally unique character.

Think of people who live in villages/ towns where everyone knows everyone by name.

You need to create that kind of uniqueness in characters.

Never try and make an MMO and think like an FPS person. (Like you did when you introduced "dungeon finder" and shortcuts like those.

Back in the day (those wonderful days) people used to gather up near the entrance of Razor fen Kraul or Blackfathom deeps and talk have fun ganking others ....that there was the moment which is LOST in the game now. There is no user created fun anymore because you added dungeon finder. Fire the guy who gave you that stupid idea.

Its been 3 years now that I have not played wow.... and still i have high hopes that someday someone will rise to the challenge and rollback their SVN servers to pre 2006 and make a new server for players who like Vanilla wow. It was fun that time....

Can you do that Blizzard? Just a RollBack on the Last stable release of the SVN servers to 2007 build and make a server JUST for VANILLA wow? Can you even consider it ?

I would start playing if there was a Vanilla server... sigh... good ol days.... miss my friends who i used to chat with ... not anymore since there is no need to talk at all.. just click a button and start button mashing in a dungeon.. seems like the game designers changed ... someone from FPS background was hired who liked to hack and slash all the time...

We have League of Legends for the hack and slash type ... we don't need the same in an MMO...

Bring back WOW. Bring back the game which had no shortcuts ... no flying around ..

I feel its the same in real life ... we used to have fun playing with friends ... kids nowadays don't even know what playing with friends means ..they have too much technology around to keep them occupied and they never experience the REAL fun playing hide and seek and all that...

I played Wow because it was that kind of REAL fun, but later due to new technology(like Shortcuts to Dungeons and no need to chat or group up anymore) the Fun was gone...

Wish someone from blizzard actually reads this... and does something about it..

Remember ..there is Not ONE single game that exists today which is as good as Wow was (not anymore) .. Use that advantage .. bring back Vanilla Wow everyone of those players will be back.

In real life things change for good or bad but its hard to keep up sometimes ... WHY DOES IT HAVE TO CHANGE IN A GAME TOO!

Just Tweak stuff ... "DON'T FIX SOMETHING THAT IS NOT BROKEN!" that's the disease that wow has been ailing with for years now...

3 years .. i have not played any game that is better than wow yet... waiting.. waiting.. waiting..

LOLWUT?! Beyond 2016?? I like ya Blizzard, but #@$& that. I ain't even sure if we'll all live that long. I mean, seriously. Like ya didn't learn anything from Diablo III's YEARS of "extended polishing", at all.

@kisado87 @birdgang_1 I don't think they're going to implement it. They themselves admitted at GDC that it was downright problematic to the gameplay of Diablo 3.

@telaros Titan was originally designed to be significantly different from WoW. Now I fear that they have reverted back to WoW's design.

"World of Warcraft, is the biggest subscription-based MMO on the market. It launched in 2004 and had 8.3 million subscribers at the end of March, down from a peak playerbase of 12 million in 2010." Lol, which MMO, F2P or subscription based, even *has* as many people playing it as WoW has had people dropping off of it? I'm not keen on another MMO or pseudo-MMO like Diablo 3 was, but I wonder if any new MMO, even one by Blizzard can reach the numbers that WoW has/have had.

@Hurvl I doubt it, unless it's free-to-play. Then again there are plenty of F2P games whose playerbase far surpasses that of WoW already.

@Ravenshout Oh yeah, name one! I've had difficulty finding any info other than these articles about the player base of MMO's. All I find when googling or asking people on forums are the articles like these. There is no easy or even slightly straightforward way to see how many people play a certain MMO. All I hear are people bashing or praising MMO's, which offers no info whatsoever.

@Hurvl @Ravenshout Not MMOs per se, but LoL has somewhere around 32 million players last I checked. That and World Of Tanks. Bear in mind that these aren't MMOs per se. They just happen to be free-to-play online games. Alas, in terms of profit generation, no single game comes close the amount of money WoW sucks in every year.

I hope its not really another MMO in the format we currently know. I need something fresh that can be played solo if I wish to. Still the best part of news is that people have been re-assigned and not fired, honestly this is the best part - always, if only EA could learn and retain talent... then maybe they could rise above mediocracy.

World of Warcraft Forever, definitely a possible Duke Nukem forever situation. Besides that point, I think Blizzard has realized the potential for "Titan" to be released on PS4 and XB1 instead of just PC like WoW. I love PC and will never stop praising the PC god. But an MMO by Blizzard on consoles would definitely kick ass.

@davet666 Blizzard will remain exclusive to PC. It has been there base since forever becaus eit allows them to overhaul the game more efficiently on the most flexible platform. This is all stated in their 2012-2013 Financial Statement and Investors Documents. Which are easy to find on google btw. Titan is listed on as one of their projects on there as well though even then they remain mysterious for the most part.

@davet666 I'm thinking it was a FPS type of game like a lot of other people are saying and they saw planetside 2 and destiny and said time to go back to the scrap board. They've been trying to make a starcraft fps for awhile now, if anyone remembers starcraft ghost.

They want to create another WoW, another CoD. They need to or their future prospects are doomed. This is most definitely a great decision.

@AuronAXE A great decision from a business perspective, more often than not, is not a great decision from a gamer's perspective, but I've never been personally outraged that frequently by that connection.

They don't want to release something that looks/feels out of date...

Blizzard could be setting their own goals a little higher with this design change.

Anytime you delay a game for 3 years you're changing a lot, if not starting from scratch. Look at the FF14: AAR transformation as an example and that took 2 years.

Pretty much Vaporware. When is the last time blizzard has made a unique IP? They arnt exactly known for making unique games. Sure they have a nice universe and storyline, but in terms of actual unique gameplay, it was all pretty much done before.

@Kooken58 What if I was to tell you that everything you can think of has been done before. Would that stop you from trying ? no because then your life would be meaningless. Your comment contains nothing that has not been said before but it made you feel better to say it so...here's to feeling good about yourself.

I don't care that they don't come up with new IPs. But at least make sequels that are somewhere NEAR the quality of their predecessors.

After seeing StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3... WoW fans must be trembling...

Hasn't this game been in development since 2007, with an expected release date of 2010-2013, and the title still isn't been announced? Now its look its going to be pushed to 2016. Haha game will be scrapped like Starcraft Ghost, and no reason to innovate while you can keep collecting sub fees from the remaining 8 million wow sheep.

Blizzard was one of the best devs out there back in the day, then they started releasing keep-the-game-alive money grab wow expansions, along with that obvious video game ebay store, aka Diablo 3, which should not have been considered a sequel to D2 by any means.

Might as well put that final nail in the coffin.

@vadagar1 its funny that every other person who complains about diablo 3 put in 200 hours into the game before declaring it garbage and ill never play it again.

i played it till inferno, didnt need a second job at the time which inferno farming was and quit. i came back 2 months ago, played another 40-50 hours and quit again. for 60 bucks i got over a hundred hours of gameplay, it seems clear blizzard needs a PR guy whose only job is to manage the outlandish expectations that blizzard fans now have. if you played more than 40 hours of d3, you got your monies worth. and if you a poster on this site and own D3, im sure you played far more than 40 hours.
