Blizzard confirms next-gen MMOG called Titan

Following purportedly leaked release schedule, cofounder Frank Pearce says studio has begun talking about title as a recruitment tool.

Early this month, an austere document appeared online purporting to be Blizzard Entertainment's road map for the next five years. Dated April 2, 2010, the document listed quarterly release windows for all of the Irvine, California-based studio's projects, including Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm (Q4 2011), Diablo 3 (Q4 2011), and World of Warcraft's fourth expansion (Q2 2012). Also appearing in that chart was a mystery project, bearing the title Titan and a Q4 2013 release window.

Blizzard insists Titan won't be one of World of Warcraft's competitors.
Blizzard insists Titan won't be one of World of Warcraft's competitors.

Though the validity of the chart is apocryphal at best, it has been lent some measure of credence this week, courtesy of none other than Blizzard cofounder and executive vice president Frank Pearce. As part of the 2010 VGA ceremony, Pearce spoke with gaming blog Destructoid, confirming Titan as at the very least a working title for the studio's much-speculated upon new massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

"Titan is… the media is not meant to know anything about that," Pearce said. "It's our next-gen MMO, and we've only started talking about it in a limited fashion because we want to leverage the fact that we're working on something like that for the purpose of recruiting--getting some of the best talent in the industry on that."

Blizzard has been teasing out pieces of its next big project since 2007, when it confirmed that a non-World of Warcraft MMOG was in development. The game, which Blizzard does not see as a competitor to WOW, will be an all-new property with, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, "a little more broad appeal."

This is good news. Diabo 3 (Q4 2011). Yeah baby!!! As for "Titan", that's great, but I do not have the time anymore to play MMO. Maybe in another 4 yrs from now.

Ok so since this is Blizzard, this game is going to be amazing. Everything Blizzard has ever done has been amazing, usually award-winning, I am confident that this game, whatever it is, is going to blow people's minds.

ok people, seriously... stop comparing this with WoW. sure, it's an mmo, but if its not one of WoW's competitors, that means its not an mmorpg (which WoW is). besides, it's Blizzard, and Blizzard makes good games =)

@stEElyDaN909 Actually a lot of it is still based off skill. obviously if someone has put a lot of time into earning their gear, they should deserve to win more often for that effort. But I see badly geared and even lower level players win over better geared players all the time.

Okay people... Here's what we know... It is a new property. Not Warcraft... Not Starcraft... Not Diablo... Not even Lost Vikings. It's new. That's already been said. We know that it is a Massively Multiplayer Online Game. But we don't know what genre of such it is. It does however stand to reason that it would not be an MMORPG if it won't compete with WoW. The game is tentatively named Titan. This may, or may not change. And finally, that Bobby Kotick believes the game will have, "a little more broad appeal". Well, what can be said about that? Obviously, that Bobby Kotick is an idiot, and doesn't know what he's talking about. In other words, his statement means absolutely nothing. I for one believe that Blizzard's smart enough not to listen to anything he has to say, and that Mr. Kotick just isn't smart enough to understand anything Blizzard has to say. I love Blizzard, but thus far, there's no reason to get excited... There's no reason to hate it either. We simply don't know anything about it, so how can you love or hate it? At the very least, I for one can't.

@Exorte .... oh I don't have any doubts that it may get delayed. I'm just stating, from what I see written here, that 2011 will be a better holiday than 2010. Personal opinion of course.

Look at me! I'm a high level WoW player! My clothes give me superpowers and the ability to pwn those with weaker clothes! Of all the problems with WoW's pvp, the gear imbalance is probably the worst. Those with better gear win much more often than not, and skill will take a back seat to stats any day of the week. I have a sneaking suspicion that this new "Titan" will be a pvp based hero type game based on skill, like DOTA and LOL, but at the same time drastically different. I could live with that.

I think blizzard wants to create and MMO that is more skill based. Something that will take more than just gear to be good. This isnt about being more casual its about getting more gamers on board.. lets face it even though wow is huge.. there is a large majority that wont touch it because of the gameplay.. most gamers like action games of some sort.. not button spamming and using #'s to become more powerful.

The only way it won't compete with WoW is if it is a sequel to WoW, and even that is pushing it.

@Exorte No, they said it would have "a little more broad appeal". That doesn't mean anything to me. It could mean it'll be a modern or sci-fi MMORPG, or it could mean that it's an MMOFPS. Who knows? While it's Blizzard developing it, I won't touch it. I'm not going to play another grindfest of an MMO.

Titan might be Blizzard looking to gain more of the casual players, like people who play games like Farmville and other casual friendly" just a few minutes a day"-games. After all, that's a huge market of customers that are very unlikely to play games that require more then a few minutes of attention. And it's - more importantly - an untapped market for Blizzard so far. That's, at least, my guess right now.

What do you think about this.... It would be good or not if "Titan" is an MMO from Diablo's world? For me it would be interesting but...also afraid that they screw up that magnificent game... I don't know... what do you think?

@xXFr34k_0uTXx Remember their planned release date for Starcraft 2? 2009. and it was released in 2010/7/28. I guessing 2012 Q1 since this is a pretty old leak.

Eh, not really looking forward to this. I don't enjoy Blizzard MMOs, I haven't since Burning Crusade. No evidence to show that it'll be ANY different from the well-rewarded design they used for WoW.

Why don't they do something like what Mm did with Littlebigplanet 2. Create another game inside of the Warcraft universe. Allowing you to use your character from WoW?
