Blizzard confirms next-gen MMOG called Titan

Following purportedly leaked release schedule, cofounder Frank Pearce says studio has begun talking about title as a recruitment tool.

Early this month, an austere document appeared online purporting to be Blizzard Entertainment's road map for the next five years. Dated April 2, 2010, the document listed quarterly release windows for all of the Irvine, California-based studio's projects, including Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm (Q4 2011), Diablo 3 (Q4 2011), and World of Warcraft's fourth expansion (Q2 2012). Also appearing in that chart was a mystery project, bearing the title Titan and a Q4 2013 release window.

Blizzard insists Titan won't be one of World of Warcraft's competitors.
Blizzard insists Titan won't be one of World of Warcraft's competitors.

Though the validity of the chart is apocryphal at best, it has been lent some measure of credence this week, courtesy of none other than Blizzard cofounder and executive vice president Frank Pearce. As part of the 2010 VGA ceremony, Pearce spoke with gaming blog Destructoid, confirming Titan as at the very least a working title for the studio's much-speculated upon new massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

"Titan is… the media is not meant to know anything about that," Pearce said. "It's our next-gen MMO, and we've only started talking about it in a limited fashion because we want to leverage the fact that we're working on something like that for the purpose of recruiting--getting some of the best talent in the industry on that."

Blizzard has been teasing out pieces of its next big project since 2007, when it confirmed that a non-World of Warcraft MMOG was in development. The game, which Blizzard does not see as a competitor to WOW, will be an all-new property with, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, "a little more broad appeal."

This game is a minimum 4 years out. By then WoW will have lower than half of it's current subscriber base. I know Cataclysm just came out but WoW's been on the market for 6 years now and has become stale. Regardless of what expansion pack you release the core of the game is the same. I predicted that Cataclysm would hit hard ... but subscriber numbers would drop off pretty quickly around 4-5 months after it's release. WoW is still the same game and I think the increase in dungeon difficulty will only turn more people away, which isn't a bad thing. Bottom line is by the time Titan comes out most people won't be playing WoW and will be looking for something new ... so by nature, Titan won't compete with WoW because WoW won't be what it is now.

There is mainstream, and there is different stuff, that become legend among its fans. Heh wish they would make something...legendary...considering the facts that were stated in previous posts so many times(that evety game blizz has released is special in its own way and blablabla...) But then again, they are part of activision now...so it will 'prolly be something mainstream with just a pice of ''legendary'' taste in it :D Anyway, cant wait to hear more news 'bout it :)

Titan...sounds like they hope it'll be a big hit. WoW is fantasy, so maybe Titan will be a sci-fi mmo.

hope its not going to be that cod MMO rumored, that would suck (i like cod but it wouldnt work as an MMO) lets just hope not. Or it could be a joint development with Blizzard and Bungie, im sure it was mentioned at some point that Bungie was interested in joining up with Activision because Activision could help them with online aspects of their next title (because of Blizzards experience in MMO's) But whatever they make i just hope its amazing.

I can't believe how dumb the general gaming public can be... I am only going to say this once so listen: Stop whining about monthly fees!!! Trust me... if blizz puts out an MMO without monthly fees you will instantly be victim to a buggy peice of crap that will be the exact same beta version for 5 years after release. The reason WoW has evolved with the technologies and is nothing short of a living/breathing creature is because of those 13 million memberships flooding their buget faster than they can carelessly spend it. So they spend it wisely instead, coming out with amazing updates and expansions so well that it's almost impossible to stop playing WoW forever. I know a lot of you will say "I stopped and will never play again" but I guarentee 90% of you will eventually go back.... we all do. ...And it's because of membership fees. So stop asking for things if you are one of these people complaining. You obviously can't handle the responsibility of giving healthy advice to game developers. If membership fees are a problem then you should be saying "Please lower membership fees to 10.00 with tax, or 5.00) or "I don't have a car to get to wallmart monthly, and I don't have a credit card so please get every convience store onboard with gametime" But I agree that the monthly fee is too high. It should be 5 dollars or even 10. - epi (sorry for the novel)

As long as it's free to play sure, even though blizard wont be making money with that, given the reputation from WoW it should get alot of players. Then they can add a payed memborship option, just like Runescape :P

@brianb0422 COD has quite the flock of sheep following it, willing to pay $60 a year to play the same game over and over, with a couple new maps/upgrades. It is good for one thing, mindless killing. Anyone who thinks they are a gamer because they play nothing but online multiplayer is just like the people who play facebook games and pop cap games; expect COD players think they are better then them because COD is so hardcore.

Bobby Kotick sure knows about "broad appeal". Look what he's done with CoD. New title every 6 months with a steady downgrade of quality but an increase in sales. He's a turd. Just seeing his name makes me want to punch a baby.

This game is very interesting. It will probably change Blizzard forever, at least in my eyes. Think about it. On the one hand, Blizzard has done something that no other developer on the planet has ever done: For 15 years, every, single, game they've released has been an overwhelming critical and/or commercial success. That's right, they have not released 1 game (count 'em, ONE game) that has flopped in the last 15 years. Even if you consider their extremely lengthy development cycles, that's still quite a feat. On the other hand, Blizzard hasn't created a new IP in about 12 years. Every single game they've released has been based on the "Big 3" (Starcraft, Warcraft, and Diablo). I, for one, am infinitely curious to see if they can pull this off. Just as Warcraft II began a new era for Blizzard, Titan will create the next, for better or worse.

I'd like to see how Blizzard can make Titan a successful MMO without having it compete with WoW. Personally I've been all about The Old Republic since I quit WoW, but even that is almost half a year away, let alone 2013 for Titan.

Hm, FPS MMO? Sounds like Fury to me. Cuz we all know how great that ended up! But well, if anyone can make that kinda game succeed it's Blizzard I guess. We'll just have to see, speculation is kinda trivial at this point. =/

I agree with shooters125 (3 posts below me). They are saying that it won't be a direct competitor to WoW because in my mind it could be something completely different... not an MMORPG, but some sort of an MMOG. Still, I have a sinking feeling that it will end up competing with WoW and will split up a fair portion of the Blizzard community, regardless of what Blizzard markets it as. Also, "broader appeal?" WoW's appeal is so broad at this point I can't imagine making a game with an appeal that is even MORE broad. Ah, the glory days of MMORPGs like EverQuest where only the hardcore made it to the top through gritty exploration, epic questing, and searching out for hidden temples and dungeons... not going from quest 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 then turning them all in from the mini-map like so many MMORPGs do today. Still, I play WoW with my friends and enjoy it for what it has to offer -- a beautiful MMORPG that appeals to many people. Keep going, Blizz. I have confidence that you will succeed. And my God, this has become a wall of text... my apologies.

Please look at the fact that they are saying MMOG instead of MMORPG people. It could be anything from a shooter to a RTS (not saying it will be, it could still be an RPG for all we know). Thats probably the main reason why it won't be a competitor to WoW.

That screenshot looks a lot like wow. And I knew Activision had something to do with the WoW portion of Blizzard!! Good luck with your own MMO failing against your own MMO, ATVI!!! I'll be on Guild wars 2, Star wars: the old republic, and maybe WoW if you guys don't destroy that any further.
