Blizzard Is Working On Mobile Titles For All Of Its IPs

Every single one.

Blizzard executive producer Allen Adham has announced that more of the developer's IPs may get the mobile game treatment. The news comes out after the announcement of Diablo Immortal, a mobile title that's part of the Diablo franchise.

"In terms of Blizzard's approach to mobile gaming, many of us over the last few years have shifted from playing primarily desktop to playing many hours on mobile, and we have many of our best developers now working on new mobile titles across all of our IPs," said Adham during a BlizzCon 2018 press conference, according to a Reddit user. "Some of them are with external partners, like Diablo Immortal; many of them are being developed internally only, and we'll have information to share on those in the future. I will say also that we have more new products in development today at Blizzard than we've ever had in our history and our future is very bright."

Now Playing: Diablo Immortal - Cinematic Trailer | Blizzcon 2018

Blizzard's four main franchises are Diablo, Warcraft, StarCraft, and Overwatch. The developer has already enjoyed success with Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, a free-to-play collectible card game based on the Warcraft series, that originally released on PC before being ported to mobile.

Diablo Immortal is a sequel to Diablo II and prequel to Diablo III, focusing on the adventures of certain series characters between those two games. After its announcement, Immortal faced widespread backlash from Diablo fans, many of whom were hoping the next game announced for the series would be Diablo IV. However, after playing Immortal ourselves, we're surprisingly impressed with what's been done. According to Blizzard, more Diablo is on the way, and not all of it is going to be for mobile.

Give me a mobile tower defense game with Blizzard polish based on any of their IP and I will enjoy it thoroughly. There's no point porting games to mobile. Reinvent - yes!

@technature: I think a lightweight RTS could work fine on a phone. Or maybe it's something different entirely.

Maybe this is how we finally get StarCraft: Ghost! : p

Gross.

Im still completely shocked and discouraged that mobile games are making this amount of money. People went from being offended in paying $15 a month for a MMORPG with TONS of contents to spending $100s on "free to play" trash games made by 2 teenagers in their basement with little to no content or meaningful progression, fun, graphics or story.

its complete madness.

@Kezzy123: I'm guessing most folks don't spend anywhere near "$100s" on their mobile games. I think the draw from Blizzard is that there are waaay more people who play mobile games than play PC or console games, and developing mobile games is cheaper, so even if the vast majority of players barely spend any money on the games, Blizzard can still make mad bank.

It's not like they need those western customers anymore. They can get far more revenues from asian mobile gamers alone without much effort and costs. It's just what the video game industry is shifting towards to; nothing we can do as traditional gaming is slowly dying.

@cboye18: Shrinking, maybe, but not dying. There is obviously still a market for more traditional console and PC games, and the industry will continue making them as long as that market is there (Blizzard included). But mobile is bigger, so we're probably going to see some publishers start increasing their focus there, at the expense of console and PC.

@cboye18: @Pyrosa

What Pyrosa said. Traditional gaming is not dying, the market is absolutely there just look at games like God of War, or Red Dead Redemption, or BoTW, or Mario Odysesy. For all intents and purposes traditional games that blew the doors off across the board.

What is happening is traditional gaming is being killed, by large corporations who have decided they can't make enough money out it, and so they don't make the games and tell their consumers that they don't want single player games, or story modes, or linear action games, or playformers; and what they do in fact want is multiplayer micro transaction business models.

**** the corporations if they don't give you what you want, support the indie developers, experience new things and take less mind of AAA graphical gameplay loops. When you open yourself to games that are not cutting edge you find a multitude of Indie developers and even 1st platform titles from Sony and Nintendo that do still provide a classic gaming experience.

And folks, stop buying micro transactions and loot boxes. Stop buying shitty mobile crap. Stop buying CoD and Assasins Creed every single year for more money and less actual original content with pay walls in front of everything.

@ToadstoolPeach: I mean, it seems like the WoW classic servers, the StarCraft remaster, this WarCraft 3 remake, and the rumored Diablo 4 project are all aimed pretty squarely at the existing fan base.

They are literally shitting all over their fan base. Not only are they releasing a mobile version of a game people have been wanting a sequel to for years, they're not even building it in house and instead farming it out a Chinese mobile dev while admitting that their other IP are good enough to be developed in house.

Blizzard used to be full of real, hardcore gamers like their fan base. Obviously that's no longer true. They're just appealing to foreign markets with this and it will hurt them.

@WARLOCK234: He meant that the word you're looking for is "figuratively" rather than "literally."

Being literally shat upon costs $40 extra.

@Pyrosa: Yes, I understand that. It's a colloquialization, I believe is the correct term (I don't know I'm not a linguist). Surely you've heard someone use the word "literally" in a non-literal sense before.

Maybe it's a just a bad habit on my part but "figuratively shitting" doesn't seem to carry as much weight!

@WARLOCK234: I've seen the word "literally" used incorrectly a bunch, yes.

Also, weren't the rumors that Diablo 4 was originally going to be announced at BlizzCon, but they decided it wasn't ready yet? I feel like Diablo fans can probably survive the existence of a mobile game they aren't interested in when they've got continuing support for Diablo 3, and a sequel of some kind in the works. And maybe even a remaster of 2; Blizzard seems to be into that kind of thing lately.

@WARLOCK234: And I'm sure you'll eventually get that. The fact that they announced a mobile game doesn't preclude any other projects that "we" might like more. If you're going to get all ****ty as soon as somebody announces a game you don't want, you're going to spend a lot of time looking like a bratty kid on the internet.

@Mogan: I don't think it's unreasonable to voice my disinterest in a title when I've been waiting for a new Diablo game for 6 years and frankly wasn't even that happy with Diablo 3 compared to Diablo 2. And it's not like I'm the only one that feels this way.

I'm not crying over it, but a new game in the vein of Diablo 2 sure would be fun to play.
