Blizzard Still Debating Post-Launch Support for Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition

Diablo III players on PC are used to getting regular updates that address bugs and balancing issues, as well as new content. The console version of the game hasn’t received the same treatment, and Blizzard is currently debating how it will support the Xbox One and PlayStation 4-bound Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition after launch.

“We're still working out all the details regarding if and how Ultimate Evil Edition will be supported post-launch,” a Blizzard community manager said on the game’s official forums. “(e.g. will we patch the game after it ships? if yes, should we only patch to fix bugs and address critical game issues, or should we patch in new content as well? at what frequency should we patch?), so we don’t have an answer for you right now.”

Blizzard did confirm that Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition will ship on all platforms with all updates included up to patch 2.0.5, and that there will “likely” be a “Day 1” patch to add in fixes and content from patch 2.0.6 as well. That would bring it up to date with the current PC version, but Blizzard is already testing patch 2.1.0, which adds leaderboards, more challenging rifts, new environments, and much more content.

Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition launches August 19 for PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. The game contains the main Diablo III game and the Reaper of Souls expansion. As we learned at E3, the PS4 version of the game includes infected from The Last of Us, as well as a special Shadow of the Colossus transmog set.

Why not just provide console support via the web, either thru the console or USB? Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you browse the internet on the console, and download something from a website like you would a computer? Or otherwise, log into a PC, download patch to a USB stick, load into console and update content? Or is that too much to ask, to at least give effort in supporting your product, rather than just throwing your hands up and going "meh!"

I won't be buying it if there is no post-launch support. I own it on the PC, and I played it on the PS3, and it was a whole new game...all back to the annoying crap that was patched a looong time ago for the PC. If anything, UE should include 2.1 considering it is already on the PTR.

Does that mean that the price will be lower than the PC version as it will (possibly) be lighter in content?

I wish they would bring an offline mode and lan party functionality to PC like the consoles are getting. IT is nearly impossible for a few friends to play D3 on pc in the same room because of always online-. Even with a perfect fast connection- there are tons of drops, lags, server offline that makes playing through the storymode rpg nearly impossible. The only thing general chat is useful for is letting you know its not just you that is getting lag spikes all day and night.

IF the ps4 supports 1080p 60fps, D3 then that will be a console seller.

<< LINK REMOVED >> as an Aussie having a choice of connecting to EUR or USA with 400'ish ping on a good day I totally agree. They fixed most of the problems since ROS and even deployed an Australian server for ROS, still get some lag spikes usually when an elite pack is arriving.

I never tried hardcore mode, just because of how many times I died to lag.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I have been lucky enough to live with some very good broadband with nice latency as well, but here on the East coast of USA you can still be a victim of ISP, or blizzard server hiccups.

When I play an MMO like WoW you may get some lag spikes but it is very infrequent and usually does not effect gameplay because of the genre. FPS like COD on consoles i rarely get any kind of problems ever, but a lag spike can almost ruin a game.

The thing is with the above two examples - I know and expect a constant internet connection because of there genre and gameplay, but why Diablo 3 a single player rpg of old, requires a constant connection does not make sense. I understand components that require constant internet but those are choices and no way need to be forced onto paying players who just want to run through the game without a few hour downtime for server maintence.

OR when I stay at the farm - that is one game I know i cannot play because of lack of broadband. IT makes no sense for those who want to run the campaign in peace.

Then why do it in the first place, if you're going to half-ass it? Should have just kept it on PC.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Exactly. This is not something you should have to debate. Otherwise, it clearly becomes about the money. Release the game and all the DLC combined and provide no further support in the form of patches.

Remember when Blizzard used to support their games forever? Years later Starcraft and Warcraft 3 were still getting patches?

New Blizzard doesn't support their games. Now they have to "debate" whether they should make their games better or not. After all, no one pays for patches, and new Blizzard is about squeezing money from the few fools left still playing.

<< LINK REMOVED >> This is part of the reason why I'm still waiting for the offline playable version to be released, so that whenever Blizzard may decide it's not worth their time anymore, I'd still be able to use the product I bought.

Until then I have no interest to buy Diablo 3.

Remember, they are "Activision Blizzard" now, not just "Blizzard Entertainment" anymore, so this may give you a hint why they changed their approach when it comes to support.

I hope we get it but I also understand that the console owners can make updating their game pure hell. I think Final Fantasy: a Realm Reborn did it right. Have a login screen from a web sight that can upgrade your machine instead of using Live or PSN though I don't think LIVE will allow that. The cost of updating all the time from PSN and LIVE could cost them a lot.

I don't really care about DLC, but patches are important. This might be a no buy if that's the case.

People need to know about this straight up. This is a problem. If I hadn't visited Gamespot on the right day, I would've not known about this and instead of waiting to see what's gonna happen, I would've bought the game. I tell you if there is a notice on the box (and imo there should be) that says "this product will not be supported via patches in the future" sales would plummet. A Diablo 3 version that is inferior 'hey all the cool new things and balancing done on the pc? Already in testing? Patch 2.1? Yeah your not getting it...'

I'm still mad that Blizzard put Starcraft Ghost on " indefinite hold" for the last 10 years. Something they say they still may do....yea right.

Well this is quite normal..because patching doesn't cost a thing on the PC where as on the console you have to pay a fee (last I heard) to be able to patch the game.

This is a reason why so many indie developers prefer to develop and release their games on PC, because of that reason.

PS: This might have changed however (regarding the needing to pay Microsoft for patches) so take what I said with a grain of salt.

<< LINK REMOVED >> From what I last heard, game important fixes under a certain size will not cost anything if not done too freq. Larger more in depth fixes that usually require a large size, like the last console patch that updated many of the things now on PC, will cost something nominal - but blizzard always pushes adds and adds for content in their games pretty heavy and I am sure it would easily cover the costs. I think what the above developer refers to is the 10yr life cycle of their games and all of the old, new changes they constantly tweak- would it be worth patching the ps3/360 versions years down the road. Just how many patches will the D3 get on the new consoles down the road. This diablo 3 had soo many bugs and glitches from its first launch - that patches and fixes were constant, esp always online. But the consoles were so much smoother. I think this game will be fine and get patches with each new expansion in the future no problem, but not patches every week like the computer version.

I thought for sure I'd buy this for xbox one. That's bullshit if they don't patch regularly. To me that is like they are giving the big F.U. to console gamers. Diablo 3 has pretty well been a disaster.

As expected. The community is reacting very poorly to this. If they don't provide news with details on whether or not they will be supporting the console game they will lose A LOT of purchases. (I made the topic that Grimiku responded on) If they make this mistake the community will not take it lightly. HOPE AND PRAY BLIZZARD LISTENS TO US!

Now I didnt go to business school or anything like that so maybe im missing something but it seems to me that if you want to keep customers happy so they will be repeat customers then you support the product you sell not go "Ummmm, lets not mess with that noise."

I had planned on buying the PS4 version of the game until I read this. If they're not going to add tiered rifts and new content to the console version then they have guaranteed they won't get my money.

And while blizzard debates this, I'll debate why I should trust Blizzard products to work after I pay for them anymore.

Im having lots of fun with my friend right now playing the original PS3 version and were both waiting for the UEE release. But seriously, seeing how the PC version was written SCAM all over it,and how much BLATANT it is that the game was designed for consoles in the first place, having these sell-out tools ''debate'' on if theyre going to show the same support on all platforms is just a slap in the face to consumers. Ive already paid 60 for the f'ng puke-worthy PC version on release where I got all of my shlt hacked in the matter of a single night, PAID AGAIN full price on PS3 release (ive put a good 200hrs + in the console version so far) and these guys also want us to pay 40$ again for the damn xpac (which looks more like a DLC than an actual Xpac) + the original game and YET THEY WONT GIVE THESE VERSIONS THE SUPPORT NEEDED? UEE better come with patch 2.1 and be on par with the PC version of the game.
