Blizzard Talks Warcraft 3: Reforged Complaints, Patches Coming Soon

The studio apologized and offered details on upcoming patches for the Warcraft 3 remaster.

After a wave of criticism was directed toward Activision Blizzard for its handling of Warcraft 3: Reforged, the company has issued an apology for the problems and outlined a couple of patches currently in the works. [Update: Blizzard has released the first of these, with a new patch out now.]

Warcraft community manager Randy "Kaivax" Jordan took to the company's forums to discuss Blizzard's plans for Reforged, specifying that the team is "fully committed to supporting the game [and the Warcraft 3 community] for a long time to come." This includes preparing a patch scheduled to go live later this week that will address mismatched color and shading modules, portrait animations and audio bugs, UI fixes, and more.

Now Playing: Warcraft 3: Reforged - Original Vs. Remaster (Cinematic Trailer)

Most notably, though, Jordan takes aim at the cutscene controversy. Many fans have noted that certain cutscenes failed to live up to what Blizzard had previously shown during BlizzCon 2018. Jordan said the lack of re-animated cutscenes was, essentially, to keep the original spirit of Warcraft 3 intact.

"[W]e did not want the in-game cutscenes to steer too far from the original game," Jordan said. "We went a little deeper into the thought process behind that at the show, but the main takeaway is that the campaigns tell one of the classic stories in Warcraft history, and we want to preserve the true spirit of Warcraft 3 and allow players to relive these unforgettable moments as they were (albeit rebuilt with new animations and the higher fidelity art)."

"[W]e want to say we're sorry to those of you who didn't have the experience you wanted, and we'd like to share our plans for what’s coming next."

Elsewhere in the forum post, Jordan said that some online features like clans and leaderboards are still coming. Jordan didn't provide a definitive date as to when they will go live, other than the vague "in the coming weeks" timeframe. Still, he confirmed that Blizzard is "hard at work" on getting these missing features up and running.

The "apology" doesn't address the major problems, specifically the mods now belonging to Activision and only the units receiving a visual makeover, the backgrounds and textures are all the same.

Fans were promised a makeover akin to the StarCraft remaster which redid everything from scratch, not this half-hearted attempt. It damn sure isn't worth $30, more like $5, if that. Deeply disappointing, this isn't the Blizzard I've known and loved for nearly 3 decades.

@Conner_Macleod: Yea, I am getting tired of companies trying to screw over fans with these supposedly remakes. Many developers with barely do anything with the actual remade game, then they will sell the game for a absurd price, when its just updated textures a few other minor polishes.

And how the hell did this reforged take so damn long to be released, when what we ultimately get is garbage really. For sure this was not worth the price tag. And shame on them for altering the original and changing so many things.

@hyru99: What I don't understand is why they chose to keep the same price even after shadily cutting ALL the features they have originally promised. Even going so far to still advertise the missing features on their official web page (ex. blizzcon 2018 trailer etc.). Like I get the bumped price before but now it just simply isn't worth it. Only current blizzard can manage to demaster a 17 year old game by making it worse...really was a let down. It goes to show you should never preorder games and always wait for the release to see how a game does before buying. Trust needs to be earned and quite frankly alot of these corporate gaming companies have lost it. Guess we still have CD project red am I right you guys? xD At least they are still passionate about created the best games possible and not releasing half broken disasters. Not yet at least...

@Pupchu: Yes what the other guys said. All the people that made blizzard famous have been chased and/or have chosen to leave the company due to new management. It was the awesome people that made the company. Now its just a shell (literally) of its former self. RIP.

Why is a community manager communicating this lol. Where is the project's director or even the studio lead.

If they care so little they're having the frontline take the burn, I have low hopes.

@Iemander: Yes, and its like a slap in the face because they fail to take responsibility regarding their mistakes such as their lack of communication regarding the changes made. Instead of owning up to their mistakes this corporate statement seems more like its putting the blame more on the fans. They still are even advertising the content that was cut from the game on their product page like the blizzcon 2018 trailer amongst other features not in the game.

Um...that wasn't an apology! Glad I didn't buy this dumpster fire of a game. Blizzard, you need to do what Bungie did, and leave Activision! They are absolutely destroying your reputation!

I think they could have avoided a lot of this by communicating stronger, and earlier on, that they were not going forward with a lot of the changes that they first announced. I think they did announce this, but apparently, millions of people (myself included) missed that messaging.

That said, it is pretty shady that this replaced the original WC3 for people that already owned it, when they specifically said that wasn't going to happen.

@Tekarukite: They did announce that, but it didn’t get rebroadcast and made a big deal of the way the initial reveal was.

@mogan: They still have the old blizzcon 2018 trailer advertised on the official product page amongst other missing features that have been cut, like its what your going to get when you purchase the game. Communication really was lacking here...

@aross2004: Today's blizzard seems a bit incompetent, but I suppose time will tell. Definitely won't be buying it day 1 though considering Blizzards track record. I remember D3 also had problems at launch with its auction house implementation. Truly destroyed the in game economy. Lets hope they learned, but this is blizzard we are talking about so I remain a bit cynical.

So, I know that criticism for this game is susceptible to hyperbole (as is expected of such emotionally charged, high profile legacy games with unattainable expectations). The wave of early negative feedback went viral and triggered a massive emotional response of review bombing. It's one of many reasons why I take most meta reviews (users & critics) with a huge pinch of salt.

That said, in this case, the criticism is 100% justified towards Activision/Blizzard. For their abysmal handling of this public relations debacle and complete lack of accountability. How do massive companies (in entertainment no less) still make such fundamental mistakes as blame shifting and finger pointing with their customer base, in 2020!? Like when Star Wars TLJ had a similar critical response and the apparent PR strategy was insulting the fanbase...

The fact that Blizzard keeps responding in the relative obscurity of their site Forum instead of proper public responses through larger media platforms, reeks of insecurity. Then there's the laughable "we want to preserve the true spirit of Warcraft 3" excuse... which would be akin to "remastering" an old movie on BluRay but keeping the VHS visual fidelity for the same excuse.

I'm no corporate apologist, but normally I can somewhat "justify" certain standards of the AAA game industry — There is no excuse for a total lack of accountability.

A shame, another good developer is definitely ruined. I had a good time with overwatch and hearthstone, played some starcraft 2... But with time, blizzard only disappoints. Tried to balance and add new stuff for overwatch and they failed at that time and time again. I was impressed with hearthstone, played very recently, the early game seemed balanced and fair... then, a desert themed update arrived, don't remember the name now... It added "quests" and some of them were obviously broken (like the infamous druid). At that point, I noticed their schemes... Adding new over powered cards, sell them in loot boxes aimed at those players who wants to "compete", they don't want to fall behind, etc.. It's scummy, to say the least. It's not failed attempts to balance the game, just like in overwatch, it's more inline with manipulation.

@gleencross: My question is. When Blizzard finally eats it. Do the games we purchased that are "Online Only" (like diablo 3) get completely pulled? What happens to the library of older games?

My guess is, that they will cease to function.

@hyru99: I mean I guess? Servers will only remain up for how long they are paying the bills. If the company ceases to exist I don't think they will keep them up. Never the less eventually they will come down even if blizzard doesn't close down. As blizzard becomes more corporate they will seek to find new ways to cut costs and they will probably start by closing the servers for some of its older games. This was why people were originally concerned and up in arms about it being always online. You don't really own these type of games you rent them.

It was released too early and the mod thing is bad. I didn't play the mods, but if it keeps people from playing it in general, that's a problem.

Their mod policy is more perturbing.

Overall though, none of this is surprising, Blizzard has always been a fairly arrogant company.

@uninspiredcup: At least in the past their arrogance was warranted as they were kinda like the cd project red of today. By gamers for gamers kinda thing. Unfortunately they have basically did a 180 and dragged their past legacy through the mud. After Activision took over things steady got worse as they became more corporate and less passionate regarding the games they make. Soon they just seemed to have fallen out of touch with what their customers wanted from them. Some of those recent blizzcon debacles are evidence of this - ex. mobile d3 immortal, etc.

@uninspiredcup: They only became that way after the merger with Activision. Back when WC1-3, Diablo 1-2 and SC was a great decade and a half. Hell, WoW was great right up until the merger in WoLK and it just became more of a live service game as time passed since.

But what pissed me off the most is that during Reforged's announcement Blizz's rep said that it was a PASSION project. How the flying **** is it a passion project if they outsource it to a 3rd party company to make it for them? That just SCREAMS Activision!

@Art3Zero: It makes sense that they’d want the original game and Reforged to be able to play together.

I kind of wonder if they even realized they’d screw up the original when they updated it. : p

@Art3Zero: The metacritic score is ridiculous hyperbole, but I’m not suggesting Blizzard hasn’t F’d WC3 up pretty good for some folks. I’m saying it makes sense they’d try to get the two versions in parity so they could play together, and that appears to be what lead to the mess.

Blizzard should have kept y'all's 💰 and let you suck on your buyer's remorse! You were so hungry for your nostalgia boner that you bought a game knowing it's blizz 2020. You are lucky they still seem to care enough to offer refunds to basically everyone.
