Blizzard: Warcraft 4 or Other New RTS Games "Depends On the Players"

Blizzards wants to know what you want.

At Blizzcon this weekend Blizzard announced that the next chapter for the Starcraft story will be a series of episodic adventures due out next year, but what about the next entry in the developer's other big RTS franchise, Warcraft? Earlier this year, Blizzard said in an interview that Starcraft 3 or Warcraft 4 could still happen. But as Starcraft II lead developer Tim Morten clarified in an interview with GameSpot this weekend, that largely depends on what the series' fans say they want.

"I can tell you that, today, our focus is 100% on this content that we've announced here at the show. What the future holds really depends so much on what we hear back from players. We love RTS, we love this genre. The StarCraft universe is fantastic; the Warcraft universe clearly has more stories that can be told. There are new Blizzard IPs; there's the potential to make completely new stories altogether. We want to hear back from our players what they would be excited about, but as a team, we've just been so busy finishing Legacy of the Void and teeing up this new content that we haven't had a chance to make any decisions."

As to why they decided to pursue episodic content instead of a full sequel or a new trilogy, he explained, "The single biggest factor was the messaging that we've gotten from players that they don't want the story to end. They really enjoy playing campaign style content and that they would like to see more of it from us. I think secondarily, but also important, is that the team is so excited about continuing to produce this kind of content. And Nova really is such a fan-favorite character and so intriguing in terms of the 'ghost' abilities that she possesses; she seemed like a great place to start this kind of storytelling experimentation.'

As to how the content will be delivered, Morten clarified that the game will have three acts with three missions each. "At the end of that, we'll be interested to see how player response is and if players feel like we should build more content like that. Or are they looking for a new, full game; what is it that they want to see out of StarCraft and out of RTS? But we really feel like this is a compelling way to explore new stories now that the storyline of the main characters is wrapping up. It's an opportunity for us to interact with our audience in a way that's more frequent than we ever have before."

If you purchase Legacy of the Void, will that include Nova Covert Ops content? Morten said, "This content won't be ready until next year. So Legacy of the Void will exist as its own game, and this content will be delivered as we build it over the course of 2016."

As for the potential cost, Morten said, "There is a version of StarCraft called Starter Edition that's freely available to players. Our plan is to make this post-launch content available to anyone who has any version of StarCraft, including Starter Edition."

For now, StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void is due out for PC on November 10. What the future holds for the series after that remains to be written. For even more news from Blizzcon 2015, check out our wrap up of news, trailers, and impressions.

As a Starcraft fan, I'd like to see SC3 created. Also as a single player campaign fan, I'd love to see more of that too... I like cooperative play where you need to work together, and it is a good bit of fun as well...

Less of a multiplayer fan, due to the twitchy nature of RTS / RTM games and online play having to deal with snotty kids/college students trying to "earn a living" playing a game... :-P

Would I want a Warcraft 4? Sure, but what story is left to tell? Whats left from the buildup in the ending of Frozen Throne? Oh that's right, nothing, all your storylines got wasted away in WoW.

ok blizzard please dont release any games until your developers have become mature enough and dont create these kinderland games you are creating right now.

You used to be a company i respected and now you are a company creating games for 6 years old kids.

Thats how you say thank you to your old players.

The ones that helped you become what you are today and you are sh1tting on our face with those trash kid game releases that come out one after another.

F... you and i hope to be destroyed as a company for good

@repalioaderfes: Blizzard is one of the best and most consistent developer out there.

And there are MANY people out there that share the opinion that SC2 and D3 are wayyy better than Brood war and D1/D2.

Please no more Warcraft! This franchise is overused enough already and its still nothing special. Besides some boring idiots everyone has enough of orks and elves.

Plus Warcraft 3 was one of the most boring to watch esport games ever. Every match played the same.

The best would be if Blizzard would just create a new setting and story in a completely new ip/franchise and a modernized FPS gameplay. Please stop demanding old crap, folks. Demand new stuff!

Warcraft 4 for gods sake. And please don't take 10 years to make it, god damn it, Blizzard makes cool games but you die of old age until they're done.

Why do they need to think so much? Update the graphics and change some the character / place names around - and we have a "new" (generic) RTS. The esports clickfest experts will lap it up like they do with Fartcraft 2 or C&C's recycled 20 year old gameplay. Easy money with little work.

Anything but crappy MMOs.

Make the next Warcraft be about the events during World of Warcraft, but in RTS format.

@Evil_Sidekick: I want WarCraft 4, but IDK if I care about WoW's story. Can we just pick up after WC3 and Frozen Throne and act like WoW never happened?

Would bringing Warcraft 4 (if that's what they decide on) even have a chance of coming to consoles? I'm curious what you guys think on that matter, and do not turn this into a PC/Console X1/PS4 BS fanboy war, I just want the thoughts of that happening.

@crimson_gungnir: Blizzard has found a fair amount of success on consoles with Diablo III and I expect Overwatch to do well there, too. So I would assume they'd go with the Diablo III approach and release it on PC first and then port it over to consoles shortly after.

@isv666: That's what I'm hoping for man, I LOVED Diablo III, I think the X1/PS4 port was great, and I loved Warcraft 3 as well, so I'd love to see Warcraft 4 on consoles forsure!

@crimson_gungnir: I don't think it's impossible for it to happen. I think we would see StarCraft II (all three parts) get ported to consoles as one package first, though.

@gokartmozart89: I'd love to see both (Warcraft 4 and Starcraft 2) on New Gen, I have Starcraft 2 on my PC, but I'm just not big on PC gaming so I never really play it, I'd play it more if it was for my X1, its a great game, but I love my gamerscore and I'd love to be able to play with friends.

@bojan_sokol: Well look at Halo Wars, it was a great RTS, and Halo Wars 2 will be PC/X1, so its not really dumbing down, it can be done.

@crimson_gungnir no it cant be done. halo wars is a dumbed down simplistic game , starcraft or warcraft is simply impossible on a controller. you need a high number of actions per minute high speed and precision . forget it. WIll never happen. YOu wouldnt want to play such a version. a clunky chore impossible to control. YOu would throw away your pad after 2 min. WOuld feel like walking naked in a swamp. Shooters are terrible enough on consoles but high speed rts is simply impossible

StarCraft had enough love with SC2's expansions. We don't need SC3 for another decade. WarCraft 4, on the other hand, would be a golden opportunity to evolve on the War3 mechanics that ended up being beloved by millions.

Blizzard, get your shit together and do War4 as a pre-WoW thing, because you've lost us ages ago with that convoluted and insane storyline.

I'd want a Starcraft 3. But i want a whole game. None of this split up game like in SC2. I want the whole game like in the original game with all the campaigns. And if they are going to release campaigns in their own game, they should be much cheaper and released only a year apart.

When i think of games they could bring back though. I aways think of Lost Vikings. Only similar thing i played was Trine, but it didn't have as much personality as Lost Vikings and i know blizzard could do much better than Trine ever did.

Pretty sure way more people are asking for a WC4 over SC3, its been 13 years since the last game launched. I somewhat hope WC4 would continue where WC3 left off.

There is nothing I want more from Blizzard than a Warcraft 4 game. Would have loved a new Warcraft rts that was more like Warcraft 2 but at a much bigger scale. Giant battles with thousands of units, but still have base building, huge maps with real size buildings and walls. Sort of a mix between Total War and Warcraft. Where you could siege a city or send giant armies against each other. But considering where Blizzard's focus seems to be, it would just be another e-sports game.

WoW is dying (while still making loads of money with millions of subscribers), suddenly Blizzard is considering making Warcraft 4 for fans (who have been asking for it since 2004) supposedly. Starcraft Ghost was cancelled c. 2005, Starcraft 2 is ending the franchise's main story arc, Blizzard is unsure of where to go, fans want more, so reuse Ghost's elements in the same engine and release it episodically - only for the fans again (/sarcasm). Blizzard clearly loves its fans but it should be more honest with them about its background motivations, sure fans are a part of it but its all business in truth.

Yeah right. Blizzard will just keep focusing on dumbass eSports junk or catering to players that can slap down huge amounts of cash over and over again for microtransaction.
