Blizzard's next MMOG already playable

COO Paul Sams confirms that the World of Warcraft-maker's next big project, code-named Titan, has reached an advanced stage of development.

Last year, Blizzard Entertainment cofounder Frank Pearce confirmed that his company's new massively multiplayer online game was code-named "Titan" as had been indicated by a purportedly leaked Blizzard release schedule. That schedule had the game arriving in the fourth quarter of 2013--over two years away.

No Caption Provided

However, just because the game may be so far off doesn't mean that it still isn't coming together. Speaking with industry site Gamasutra, Blizzard COO Paul Sams said that the MMOG--which he did not reference by its code name--is already playable.

"We're playing it already. It is a total ball to play," he said. "We think that the reach of that product is greater than anything that we've done before. We're very excited about that. I believe that it's the type of game that will have a very long life, much like World of Warcraft has."

Sams went on to say that Blizzard hopes the new MMOG--rumored to have a first-person perspective--will eventually outgrow World of Warcraft, which he still believes has many more years in it. "The thing that we hope will happen is that it will not stop World of Warcraft, but we believe will eclipse it," he said, before adding, "So, hopefully in 10, 15 and 20 years, that [new MMOG] will still be growing strong and will have set a new mark in the industry for that type of product."

The past several years have seen a steady drip of information about Blizzard's next MMOG. In 2007, the company confirmed that a non-World of Warcraft MMOG was in development. In 2009, the company admitted the game was an all-new property with, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, "a little more broad appeal."

Blizzard isn't making games any more, their making cash cows. Dumping down the experience to make their games more accessible. basically removing functionality and depth in order to "appeal to a broader audience". The day blizzard actually make some innovative game-play features, i'll eat my words. Until then, i hope blizzard come to it's senses before even more of their most talented individuals leave the company and form their own. I don't hate blizzard, i just dislike how they operate as a business and dislike how they try to make everything mainstream instead of actually making something innovative. They got the money and people to truly make something unique, but instead they keep doing the same-old and just copy features from other games if they prove successful instead of taking some risk themselves. In my eyes they've lost their passion for making games. Then again so would i if i was 1 out of 1000s of developers working on the same god damn game. How is anybody supposed to come with any creative input if 100s of other blokes are trying to pitch their ideas as well. Their so many people they can't even make a list of the ideas people have and narrow them down to the best ones. Somebody had to say it.....

"Broader audience" in gaming industry usually means dumbing down games so I'm not too optimistic about this. Unless they make a game that succesfully unite causal and niche/harcore gamers.

@DaneGamer: Blizzard is using same strategy as Autodesk did with 3ds Max, Maya and Softimage, well they are planing that from what we can see, why beating their own product they just make another competitor and earn from both.

I'm suprised that people forget to look at this from another perspective: Starcraft II was long under development and Diablo III is taking it's time too. Like any game company you have different departments, but don't you think there is a reason Starcraft and Diablo has taken so long? They have alot of things they want to develop, but they sure as heck want to develop new franchises too, so the focus has probably been on Titan without us knowing it, i mean it's an mmo that is not suppose to take WoW's place - that's hard! How can you beat the number 1 mmo out there, when it's your own!

I hope "broader appeal" doesn't mean "lowest common denominator" and it gets dumbed down to death. Here's to world domination!

I'm sure people at Blizzard who give these interviews must of required a psychology degree in there CV. They just know exactly what to say to get the drones buzzing around, the games neigh on 3 years away and they've begun the buzz. Although, WoW pretty much sold itself due to 16 years of the Warcraft franchises legendary status, much like Diablo 3 is going to sell itself. It'll be interesting to see if they can pull it off with a new franchise (if it really is new)

Blizzard has turned into a completely different company since merging with activision and it shows in their "broader appeal" and "longer life than WoW" statements. They are simply trying to make a game that they can milk for as much money as possible now

All these talks are typical Blizzard Slow Build Up Hype Process."It's a total ball to play"? I bet it is. The company is paying your wages , i wouldn't expect it to be anything other than "a ball to play" ! Sadly once again, when it comes out Blizzard will get a free pass (like it did with SC2,god what a rip off!).All because of persistent loyal gamers trying to dig deeper into the Blizzard games and salvage some fun and glory of the originals like Diablo or Warcraft 3. All we have to learn is , accept that we had a good ride with Blizzard but it's time to let it go.

@egggeek "A little more broad appeal" sounds to me more like "A more casual experience" so... don't think this will be something for me. "So, hopefully in 10, 15 and 20 years, that [new MMOG] will still be growing strong " Are you serious? Who wants to play a game that is THAT old? cmon, WoW is already 7 years old by now and it's showing it's age. I think what they mean with that sentence is; " I hope we can milk this one out even longer than WoW " Yeah, I think they've gone crazy at Blizzard.

'a little more broad appeal' puzzles me.. FPS sci-fi does to me not have as broad an appeal as the fantasy world of WoW - though I would love it to fall under that catagory.

Forget today's World of Warcraft. I still can't forget the epic experience back in the first days of the game, it was so wondrous and epic - so much to explore, back in 2004. Nobody knew what the hell they were doing, WoW was actually a hard game for a start. I personally can't wait for Titan.

FPS SCI-FI MMO, sounds like a big possibilities as WoW isnt going to die anytime soon. If its anything like Planetside back in the day I would get it...awesome awesome game. We've done the point and click, fantasy theme too much now. Lets make something unique and fun, and I believe blizzard will pull it off. Free expansions like Eve online would be a bonus! Keep smiling.

when Blizzard say Titan, I see the largest of Saturn's moon, the only moon to have an atmosphere and after Earth is the only planet to have rivers/seas/lakes of liquid stuff, I wonder if the setting of the game is there. Say goodbye to medieval high fantasy cause Blizzard might be blasting us into space.

Does this really surprise anyone though? Blizzard's development cycles can only be measured in decades, not years, so it's no surprise that this game is playable 2 years before it's released. @SkyrimNorth: I'm not really sure what your point is. Broader appeal means it's more likely to appeal to casual gamers, so elitism should be less of an issue. But you're wrong about WoW anyways. The game was ruined by Blizzard's attempt to pull in more subscriptions while ignoring their hardcore fanbase. The gap between elitists and casual players has shrunk enormously over the last 2 expansions.

Broader appeal...I don't like that term. WoW is already almost unplayable thanks to the staggering number of elitist jerks that ruin the entire experience.

What really strikes me here is quote, "We think that the reach of that product is greater than anything that we've done before." I've been playing Blizzard games since the 90's, and I will admit that Blizzard has NEVER made a sub-par game (in my opinion). Reading something like that honestly depreciates any skepticism I have on this upcoming MMO. That being said, I just want D3 to be released. :-)

Looking forward to seeing into this game, but come on. REALLY? Already playable? I wonder how much of the game is playable, because why hasn't Diablo 3 out yet? It's like the red-headed step child of the Blizzard games. They don't much care for it, but they give it attention once and a while.

If Blizzard manages to make an outstanding FPS MMO game then I will gladly pay a monthly subscription to play such a thing. Though the idea is very hard to imagine i'm sur ethey can manage it.

@tekkelite just what I was thinking, there are rumors it has a First-Person perspective, and it has "a little more broad appeal" according to Kotick. A MMOFPS with a monthly subscription would not directly compete with WoW as they are different genres Kotick's dream come true!!!!! $WORLD OF WARFARE$!!!!!

20 years. At 15 dollars a month. That's 15 x 20 x 12... That's 3600 dollars. So I can play this MMO for it's full life. Or... I could purchase 60 other games at full retail price. I wonder what I'm going to choose...

@AuronAXE indeed! How dare they create a game that appeals to lots of people rather then your little niche gaming sector, that's just terrible. Blizzard has always had mass appeal, this is nothing new, I find this constant hate for big companies like Activision almost laughable because it lacks so much logic and reasoning. Here's a fact, game companies, from the biggest to the smallest, try to make games that will sell a lot, it's called business.

As long as I don't have to press number keys to perform attacks, aiming by clicking an enemy that stays auto-locked, and the ability to deal/receive melee damage from 50 feet away, this should be half decent.

The reason we see no info of this game is because we weren't suppose to even know it existed, information about it got leaked. It should take some time until they start doing any marketing of it.
