Blizzard's next MMOG already playable

COO Paul Sams confirms that the World of Warcraft-maker's next big project, code-named Titan, has reached an advanced stage of development.

Last year, Blizzard Entertainment cofounder Frank Pearce confirmed that his company's new massively multiplayer online game was code-named "Titan" as had been indicated by a purportedly leaked Blizzard release schedule. That schedule had the game arriving in the fourth quarter of 2013--over two years away.

However, just because the game may be so far off doesn't mean that it still isn't coming together. Speaking with industry site Gamasutra, Blizzard COO Paul Sams said that the MMOG--which he did not reference by its code name--is already playable.

"We're playing it already. It is a total ball to play," he said. "We think that the reach of that product is greater than anything that we've done before. We're very excited about that. I believe that it's the type of game that will have a very long life, much like World of Warcraft has."

Sams went on to say that Blizzard hopes the new MMOG--rumored to have a first-person perspective--will eventually outgrow World of Warcraft, which he still believes has many more years in it. "The thing that we hope will happen is that it will not stop World of Warcraft, but we believe will eclipse it," he said, before adding, "So, hopefully in 10, 15 and 20 years, that [new MMOG] will still be growing strong and will have set a new mark in the industry for that type of product."

The past several years have seen a steady drip of information about Blizzard's next MMOG. In 2007, the company confirmed that a non-World of Warcraft MMOG was in development. In 2009, the company admitted the game was an all-new property with, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, "a little more broad appeal."

"a little more broad appeal" Hasn't WoW a very broad appeal already? It's very noob-friendly from what I have heard, i.e. not having a steep learning curve.

I have yet to play an MMORPG. I would like to try one out one day, but I have yet to see one that REALLY interetesed me. maybe titian will be it. but supposedly the new bunjie project is supposed to be a FPS-MMORPG. so maybe that will be it.

Hey how about actually releasing a three campaign Starcraft game or finish Diablo before you try to copy Star Wars The Old Republic

I dont know. I think its a pretty big gamble considering the success WOW has right now, but I am sure they asked all the super genius analysts so its impossible to be wrong now.

Blizzard has a pretty solid track record, but on the other hand a lot of people that were involved in WoW's original success have moved on to other studios. I'd sooner bet on Bliz than against them, but they also have that whole Activision thing working against them too...

Confirmed before this game was a thought: It will take the world by storm. And lives will be devoted to this single game.

Excellent. I bet they're going to release some footage at Blizzcon this year - can't wait to see what Blizzard is cranking out for us this time! Oh, and the fact that this will be their first new IP released since 1998 doesn't hurt either. :D

Really interested in what this will turn out to be. "A little more broad appeal." What could this possibly be? World of Duty? Call of Craft? Umm first person shooter MMOG Perhaps? Just gonna have to wait and see. Excited? Yes very!

i gurantee Blizzard has been working on WoW 2 for years as well, and in 4-6years they will release info.. and that game will be so far ahead of anything people have seen that for another company to take it down will impossible..

Looks like Blizzard is moving it's MMOs to even a more casual audience, while it makes sense for profit, it's sad to see the good challenging MMO go. Vanilla WoW was my all time favorite and while it was a huge time sink, it was probably one of the most fun multiplayer experiences I've ever had. I don't have time for MMOs like I once did so I guess it's not too big a loss for me.

Good luck to Blizzard. Remember, if it's not broke, don't fix it.
