Borderlands 3 Trailer Includes A Gun With Legs, Tiny Tina, And More

Gearbox's next Borderlands game is on the way.

Gearbox Software has finally confirmed Borderlands 3--revealing the game's first trailer during the studio's PAX East panel. You can watch the trailer, as well as our impressions of it, below. Unfortunately, Gearbox did not announce a release date for the game. However, the developer did promise to reveal more details on Borderlands 3 will come out next week, on April 3. [Update: Before those details can come in, it looks as if Gearbox may have leaked a release date: September 13. You can check out everything we know about Borderlands 3 so far for more info.]

The trailer begins with a shot of the iconic Psycho mask and pans up to reveal that the wasteland is as desolate and full of mayhem as when we last saw it. A Children of the Vault camp is one of the first things we see and next to the entrance there are signs referring to Calypso. One message reads, "Answer Calypso's call," while another invites people to "Meet Calypso." This enigmatic figure is introduced in the very next scene and from her wry grin, overconfident swagger, and snarling sidekick, it's a pretty safe bet to say she'll be one of the key villains of Borderlands 3. For those that know their Greek mythology, Calypso is the daughter of the titan, Atlas. It just so happens that Atlas is also the name of one of the big corporate entities on Pandora, where the Borderland games primarily take place.

Now Playing: Borderlands 3 Is Finally Confirmed - GS News Update

In the next shot, we're re-introduced to Lilith, who made her debut as a playable character in the first Borderlands title. She's a key figure in the mythos of Borderlands, being a Siren--incredibly powerful women that have mysterious backgrounds. It is believed that only six Sirens can exist at any one time and, to date, three have appeared in the games. While it doesn't seem like Lilith will be playable, she will no doubt play a huge part in the events of Borderlands 3.

From there, we're introduced to four characters. These are likely the Vault Hunters players will get to control. As of yet, it's unclear what classes they correspond to. The Borderlands games tend to have a mixture of traditional archetypes like Berserker, Hunter, and Soldier, but also throw some unexpected ones into the mix too, like Siren and Mechromancer. At one point the female Vault Hunter, who looks to be melee-focused, given her ripped physique and knuckle duster, summons multiple ethereal arms like a Bodhisattva.

The trailer quickly rolls on to quick cuts of action, with the four Vault Hunters cruising around in vehicles, firing all manner of strange weaponry--including a battle mech--and taking on vicious looking monsters. At one point Borderlands 2's Maya, who also happens to be a Siren, makes an appearance, though with much longer hair now.

One of the key new features for Borderlands 3 is revealed when the words "Explore the Worlds!" appear on screen. This indicates that the game is going to be much bigger than the previous two entries, offering players a variety of different worlds to scavenge for loot and hunt down mythical treasure in. The trailer showcases some of these, with a neon city that has towering skyscrapers and overgrown swamplands, alongside the traditional Mad Max-like desert terrain.

There's a brief intermission in the trailer for Brick to lay down a sax solo that, frankly, is quite good, before we get to the Borderlands series' biggest claim to fame: guns. This time around Gearbox is claiming that Borderlands 3 will have "one billion guns," one of which is an assault rifle with little robot legs that is skipping along while firing off shots. Basically, the trailer shows off pretty much exactly what most Borderlands fans want from a sequel.

Gearbox has said more information for Borderlands 3 will be revealed on April 3. We don't know exactly what to expect, but the studio says the details will show up on Borderlands.com. If you're wondering what we thought, some of our biggest fans of the series shared their thoughts in a Borderlands 3 trailer breakdown.

The Year of Borderlands will also give fans of the series the opportunity to play a Game of the Year version of the first Borderlands, complete with new weapons and other improvements. Additionally, the Borderlands Handsome Collection is getting graphical improvements by way of a free Ultra HD Texture Pack. This will also be available for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 2 on PC. Finally, all Borderlands 2's DLC will be added to Borderlands 2 for PlayStation VR this summer.

Other news out of Gearbox's panel included a trailer for Risk of Rain 2, which is now out in Steam Early Access, as well as a trailer for Rick & Morty co-creator Justin Roiland's new game, Trover Saves The Universe, and the announcement of Bulletstorm for Nintendo Switch.

I'm underwhelmed to say the least. It looks like a BL2 expansion, not a full new game despite this is a teaser trailer, glad it's Borderlands 3 though, and not something akin to a battle royal or side game. Overall, I'll wait for reviews before I get all excited.

Im loving the amount of dislikes Gamespot staff are getting on YouTube for their idiotic and unbalanced views on games. Im talking about "Borderlands 3 trailer didn't impress us that much" video by Gamespot in which they use the "it just looks like more Broderlands" excuse.

What about Uncharted 4 didn't look like more Uncharted? Gamespot you folks have become such click bait BS.

What a difference 5 years makes.

When the Pre-Sequel released I declared it was a re-skinned BL2, however most argued it was a totally new game, complete with "Butt Slamming" and Low Gravity.

Now that BL3 is upon us and I'm hearing re-skinned BL2, has the gaming community finally caught on?

As someone said below this looks exactly like Borderlands 2. This cartoon aesthetic with serious lack of detail was fine on weak consoles at the time but it looks really dated now IMO.

Disappointed. I would be fine with them keeping the basics of the gameplay, the game is great, but visuals are hugely disappointing.

@blueinheaven: Catching hate bro, but I agree with you. I am one of those that love the BL art style, but it isn't just that. This trailer looks EXACTLY like BL2. The art style (which is fine to stay the same imho, it is Borderlands afterall), but also the mechanics, the animation, the entire engine all look identical to me. Maybe I (and many, many others I've seen on Twitter) am wrong, but it looks like this could have released as a BL2 expansion many years ago.

The question I have (along with so many others) is what has Gearbox been doing for FIVE years that shows in this trailer? Perhaps there are more in depth engine and mechanics changes this video doesn't quite showcase, that will perhaps be shown later? I really would LOVE for Gearbox to prove me wrong, I loved the crap out of BL 1 and 2, but this looks like a BL2 expansion we waited 5 years for nothing to get.

Keep the art style sure, but after 5 years of work, there should be something standing out as improved. I don't see it. Maybe the game won't crash in neon world like it did in Opportunity in BL2? Maybe it'll be properly optimized? I don't know. But as many others, I'm underwhelmed by this video after 5 years of waiting. The difference between BL2 and BLPS was minimal, with the exception of a few mechanics features, this looks to be the same.

@blueinheaven:

We are all allowed our opinion but for me you are wrong. If you changed the basic artistic character of the game it would no longer be Borderlands. If the style does not fit for you that is cool, there are a tons of 'realistic' style games out there for you to play. From the trailer it looks like they are sticking to the core character of the game and I am VERY happy about that.

@sdzald: Its also wrong because the PS3 and 360 weren't weak for their times. Just look at the Gears and Uncharted games. Borderlands has its own art style and they aren't changing it because of power. Games don't all need to be trying for photo realism graphics. Variety is always welcome.

@sdzald: I'm not asking for it to be realistic I was fine with the original style but it looks really dated now. I think they should have upgraded the engine: same style but superior detail, it could have looked amazing.

As an example look at Kingdom Hearts 3, still cartoony/animated but it looks fantastic because of the world and the detail and character on the models compared to earlier games.

B3 looks exactly like B2. Seriously WTF have they been doing all this time? They could have made an effort this is going to feel like an expansion to a 7 year old game when it comes out. If that's okay for you well fair enough, I expected more.

@blueinheaven: It's called an art style, and that unique Borderlands "marker and cel-shaded" style is loved by millions of us. Enjoy Anthem, Destiny, repeat, repeat, (yawn, vomit, etc.)

@Pyrosa: Oh good, a fanboy simpleton. I know what the art style is. I played the first two, maybe you should have read my post before blurting out your drivel.

My point was they have not modernised the engine they just increased the res and put slightly more detail in EXACTLY the same artwork. It looks like a light remaster of 2, we were all expecting 3, all except your dumb ass that is.

I have never played Anthem or Destiny. What did I say in my post that implied I did? Nothing? Yep, simpleton.

@blueinheaven: To follow up on what Blue is saying, for 1 example:

Just look at the characters running and jumping. The characters animate, look, and move IDENTICALLY to BL2. There hasn't been a single improvement, just a reskin to the BL2 character skeleton. After 5 years of development, it would be nice to see the basic running and walking animations improved at least, not a reskin from the last game. That is what you do in a dlc, you reskin the skelly with a new character design, give 'em new powers and a new skill tree, and release it for $5.99. That looks like what we have here.

Buuut…..please Gearbox prove us wrong. Maybe this trailer IS just using BL2 assets? Maybe this is not indicative of the final release? I hope so. After 5 years I won't want to pay full price for some reskins and a few new locations.

@Schizycho: There's a Borderlands remaster coming out soon and I think a 4K patch for 2. We should be able to tell if these are just res jumps maybe it's a sign of what to expect from B3.

Like you, I hope the trailer isn't really indicative of what B3 will be. I love the game, just expected a new engine and a bigger visual upgrade but oh well fingers crossed let's wait and see.

@blueinheaven: Yeah, exactly. Not like I won't buy it anyway, I love Borderlands, I just expected more of an upgrade, ie the difference between 1 and 2. This simply looks like 2.5 rather than 3 hehe.

But hopefully we are wrong. I've rarely wanted more to be wrong.

I absolutely love the Borderland's series but I wish they'd make end game content/bosses more accessible to solo players. Yeah I know, solo isn't impossible but it is haaaarrrd - at least for me :( When I do team up with friends, everyone just runs and guns straight to the badass boss fights over and over again ala Diablo 2. I like to explore and clear out an area and then fight the boss which is pretty hard in UVHM solo when fighting bosses like Voracidous.

I love Borderland's art style and "tude". Too bad I have never been able to get in the game, I have played 1 and 2 for about 10 hours each and quit. I'll probably do the same with 3.

Randy and Gearbox basically saved Gaming today.

They came right out and said "it's not a Battle Royale" while laughing.

They're just making exactly what their fans asked for: more AAA co-op campaign gaming, just like the last three. Used to be that companies understood that fans wanted more in their beloved series. GBX still clearly understands that.

@Pyrosa: Unfortunately, we're not out of the woods, yet. More details to be announced in a few days...unless he said specifically in the presentation it will be a traditional game, then yay.

Although I can see them doing both: make a "base" game that serves as the low level campaign, then create a live service for the "high level" gameplay. Which would still suck, but this only assumes you need to take part in that service to complete the story. If not, then no prob.

That does sound like a Pitchford level dick move, though.

Looks exactly like BL2. Identical.

Unless this game has PSVR with Aim support it's a hard pass.

People talk shit about Far Cry looking identical game after game, but at least Far Cry games are produced and sold nearly every year.

Gearbox has been at this for, what, SEVEN YEARS?!

But hey. Some people eat at McDonald's every day and love it, even if it gives them diarrhea on the daily.

I see this game getting a 6/10 on Gamespot and 7/10 on IGN. It'll shoot and loot fine, but it's the same damn retread as the last 3 games. That and the entire world has evolved since 2012. Games like Borderlands and Fallout were astonishing at the time, but I 100% see BL3 going down like Fallout 4: the devs are pissing themselves with pride of their new creation, but consumers aren't impressed anymore and need something NEW to draw them in. Regurgitating the same thing with a fresh coat of paint is what BGS did with Fallout 4 and everyone knows that Fallout 3 and New Vegas were much better. Same crap here. BL3 will be "good" just not great.

@nikolistary: "Looks exactly like BL2. Identical."

That's my worry. It's just a trailer, so maybe the actual game will do a lot of new and impressive stuff ... but if this is just 2009's Borderlands for the fourth time, no thanks; I've already played a ton of that game.

@nikolistary: It look identical to Bl2 due to its art style.

And you seems to b!tch more than I usually do on this website. BL2 has aged very well (better than current looter shooters I would say) and they haven't shown everything yet. And Fallout 4 had far different issues than what you make it out to be and nothing comparable to this.

Maybe you should try your statements on tired game franchises that deserve it. Innovation in AAA gaming is hard to get these days.

@cboye18: This is the defense I'm seeing everywhere though, but it ISN'T just the art style. It ALL looks identical to BL2. The art style has to stay sure, but the animations are all the same. Characters run, jump and move identically. It all just looks like the EXACT same skeleton, reskinned with new characters, and a few new locations. That sounds like a DLC that took a few months of work, not a new game with 5 years of work.

Not impressed by this trailer. I still think Borderlands 1 was the best of this franchise... from 2 they went downhill, starting with the change in the healing system.
