Borderlands 3's Epic Store-Exclusive PC Version Is A Massive Success Already

No Steam, no problem.

As part of Borderlands 3's release last week, the game launched on PC exclusively through the Epic Games Store, meaning it's not yet available on Steam. That decision generated some amount of controversy, but now, Gearbox's Randy Pitchford has revealed that the PC version of Borderlands 3 is off to a tremendous start despite being Epic-only.

The executive said the number of peak concurrent players--that is, the highest number of people playing at the same time--is around double the all-time peak concurrent player record set by Borderlands 2. "WoW! You guys are great!" Pitchford exclaimed in a tweet on release day.

Now Playing: Borderlands 3 - Craziest Guns We've Seen So Far

The launch-day peak concurrent user milestone didn't stand for long, as Borderlands 3 grew even larger in the days after release, Pitchford said.

"This greatly exceeds expectations, and our systems seem to be holding strong!" Pitchford said about the record-breaking numbers.

Borderlands 3 is exclusive on PC to the Epic Games Store until April 2020, at which time it may launch on Steam and other digital storefronts.

There is no word on how the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Borderlands 3 are performing from a user perspective, but more information should become available in due course.

EPIC success!

That’s because 99.9% of Steamers bought the game on Epic despite all the steamers they laid on the internet about it.

Makes sense. Only the belligerent numpties who troll game site comments sections care about Epic exclusivity. The other 99.9999% couldn't care less.

@darkallah: That's why 90% of comments on borderland articles on this website are people who bough and enjoy the game. Funny, you think you would be to busy playing it and having a good time yo comment.

This isnt surprising information. Borderlands was going to turn out huge numbers regardless of the platform simply because it's a highly recognizable IP.

As with most "gamers," they're completely fine with saying one thing and doing the opposite, as usual.

I'm still not touching EGS.

Does anyone else find it ironic that Gearbox got their start creating expansion content for Valve's Half Life before they started making their own games, and now they're turning around and stabbing Valve in the back with their exclusive deal on the Epic store? Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

@screamingsatori: I don't think developing Opposing Force 20 years ago makes Gearbox beholden to Valve. It's not like Valve has been "feeding" Gearbox in years.

Ive said it before ill say it again: steam doesnt need to beat epic. Steam just needs a Game Pass system and theyve won all over again.

As sucky as Epic is for their dealings, the truth is it's a non-issue for the majority of PC gamers. Nothing more than a mild inconvenience of opening another launcher.

The complaints on online forums, especially on Reddit, is just a bubble of high-strung gamers who are trying to create an artificial outrage as if the problem is an industry-wide epidemic.

But in reality it's like vegans trying to convince everyone to stop eating meat.

@maralzo: or it's a chuck of pc gamers that care about the ecosystem and dont want it to devolve into forced exclusives and losing features that they enjoy. There would would he vary few problems if epic just focused their efforts/money on making their store better and forcing exclusives, but nope. They simply dont care about the customer, and its actually pretty questionable if they care about developers either. But no, you continue ignoring the real argument and act like you have any idea.

@bonesbones: Oh I understand the argument. I don't disagree with them. But I just don't care THAT much to deprive myself of entertainment out of principle. Those concerns about the ecosystem are hypothetical at best just as much as those same people voiced concerns about having no net neutrality means ISPs will start charging people for "website packages".

There are just far more important things in life to worry about. The day Epic decides to hike prices for their exclusives is the day I'll actually give a damn. But until then, as long as I can buy a game I want, play it, and have fun, I'm not gonna let the Epic drama stop me from how I spend my own money.

@maralzo: That's pretty much where I'm at. I'll buy off GoG if it's an option, Steam if it's not, and Epic if it's not on Steam either. Epic's my third choice when I've got one, but I really don't mind having to use it when I want to play a game.

A lot of the hate is the same bandwagon exaggeration Steam got when it first started. Epic's store isn't great, but it's only a huge outrageous deal if you want it to be.

@mogan: I dont think missing a game because you dont like the place its sold had to be a huge deal.

For me, this exclusivity problem is more a function of hype and impulse control, or lack thereof. I think both are huge problems for most people who play games and are susceptible to this.

I have so many great games in my library that I've yet to play: why give in to a situation I'm not completely ok with? BL3 can wait until I'm ready.

Because the only people complaining about it weren't true borderlands fans. They were casual fans that wanted to jump on the hype train but don't have as much interest in it as the proper fans who have been waiting year after year since bl2 for a bl3 announcement at every major gaming convention. People who really care about borderlands don't give a shit what platform it's on as long as they can finally play it. I've played through it and imo it's better than bl2 in almost every way and was well worth the wait. People who keep commenting about waiting for the steam version because "screw epic" are tiresome and not true borderlands fans regardless of how much they try and act like it. That's the truth. The reason the PC version has done so well is because a lot of people who DO love borderlands don't care about the platform that it's on. So the "boycott borderlands 3" campaign went absolutely nowhere as expected. The game was always going to rise and fall on it's own merits and i think it has risen. I'd give it game of the year and those who are still letting the world know about how much of a rebel they are by waiting for the consumer-respecting steam version don't know what they are missing out on.

End of rant.

@illusivepickledonionman: yep, people that didnt buy cared more about the pc ecosystem/environment than they did about the game itself. Seems like they have self control and arent poorly compulsive, specially seeing how the game released in what is an early access state. They did this because there customer base/fans dont care about quality and simply are obsessed over constantly finding more powerful/colorful guns, for the third game in a row. Also, they got paid ahead of time by epic anyways, so further meaning gearbox didnt need to care. Pretty sad though how lazy they were with consoles though, but goes along with majority of their fan base being slow in the head.

Epic is about as boring as this article, and the numbers might even be higher when this game comes to Steam. If people blindly listen to Pitchford, then they are sheep.

@Cashmoney007: Well, he'd know what the numbers are, and you don't have any way to prove him wrong. Folks can either take his word for it or not, but I'll be nobody outside Gearbox and Epic would actually know better.

@mogan: The main fact about Pitchford is that he is an egomaniac. The best thing that Gearbox has ever done in a long time is the series of Borderlands, and why would I blindly trust the numbers from Pitchford? He will do whatever it takes to try to make Epic look good. Anyways, you are right that we don’t know if he is telling the truth or not, but I wouldn’t put money on it. Would you, Morgan? Does any of this matter though? You will buy from Epic anyways. People like you will never understand that Epic is only good for free games. It will be fine though because the launcher might have a shopping cart button in a few years or maybe actually look like a good launcher in the future? I’m sure you think that the situation with Shemue 3 is fine?

@Cashmoney007: I'll take him at his word, sure. He's the guy that would know. But even if he's wrong or lying, it's just him saying a video game is selling well on a particular store. It doesn't actually matter.

What'd I'd really "put money on" though, is that the folks saying Randy's lying are saying it because they don't want to believe him or anybody else who says something positive about Epic's store.

@Barighm: I’ve certainly seen people on the internet say that. I don’t really care if he’s a notorious liar or not, this information isn’t important enough for me to care if he COULD be lying, and nobody here knows if he is.

@mogan: hmm, u dont think the information is important enough to care if he's lying. Yet you believe him and think it's important enough to comment about. You also are aware he lies often, but dont see/care because that apparently to you doesnt mean he would lie here. But once again it's not important to you, you just only take your time to comment on it, instead of playing the game, interesting.

Everyone complaining about EPIC store being trash and etc and steam is better and they won't buy any games of EPIC game store.

And yet here we are with possibly millions of people still buying games from the Epic store. So much for the boycotting.

Only Borderlands 3. There fixed it for you.

Did you see any other dev apart from world war Z come forth and saying look we sold soo good on Epic? No, I also don't think so.

Games are selling good on EGS mainly because it lack the million shovelwares infesting Steam.

@bdrtfm: Remember back when Modern Warfare 2 was coming out, and Activision said its mutliplayer wouldn't have dedicated servers on the PC, and tons of people on the Steam board swore up and down they'd boycott it? And then those folks formed a Boycott MW2 Steam group? And then the game came out and somebody posted a screenshot of that group's roster page, and almost all of them were listed as currently playing MW2?

This seems kinda like that.

@mogan: this is exactly like that, and every other time we've seen this sort of outrage.

I give credit to Sweeney for identifying this and giving zero fucks about a customer base as emotional and unprincipled as "gamers."

But I still wont touch EGS. Even if I'm one of the handful that die on that hill, I'm not giving in to this shit, ever.
