Borderlands 4: Gearbox Trying To Show Game Early To Terminally Ill Fan

The 37-year-old is unsure "if I will be around" when the looter-shooter launches in 2025.

Self-described as a "long shot," a 37-year-old with terminal cancer asked the internet about playing Borderlands 4 early because it's unknown "if I will be around" when the game launches next year. The request did end up making its way to Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford, who's working on turning this long shot into reality.

This all started on Reddit with a post by Caleb McAlpine last week. McAlpine stated that he was "diagnosed with late stage 4 terminal cancer" and has fewer than two years to live--if chemotherapy helps slow down the spread of the illness. On X, Pitchford noted he was aware of McAlpine's status and that the two were emailing one another "to make something happen."

Now there's a chance McAlpine could see Borderlands 4 as early as next month. On Reddit, McAlpine shared an update on the situation: "Thank you everyone for your kind words, I just want to let you all know that Gearbox has something in the works, and I will be going down to Texas to meet with all of them at their HQ as long as I'm able to travel toward the middle of November, end of November."

In August, Borderlands 4 was officially announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live after months of rumors and speculation. Only a teaser video was shared of the game, though it was revealed the looter-shooter is slated to release in 2025. Pitchford also told a fan that the game has someone "far more dangerous" than Handsome Jack.

Last month, a new planet for Borderlands 4 was shown off with concept art. The game is set right after Borderlands 3 and will launch on Steam. Borderlands 3 was an Epic Games Store exclusive when it initially came out. Borderlands 4 is also planned to arrive on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The real quEstion is why would a terminaly ill person care about Borderlands4 after what they did w/ B3?

Immortalize him a NPC a funny one.

*No ClapTrap= new robot who is also a idiot but the voice acting anger is no longer an issue..

Since Randy is too arrogant to ever let the OG dude work again(and im not a fan of the Claptrap VA as a person)

They did something similar with part 2. They made the fan an NPC who would randomly appear and give the player a weapon

I’ve always found things like this and bucket lists pointless. You’re going to be dead. You’re not going to know you played the game. None of this matters.

What a waste. Should have asked to see Elder Scrolls 6 instead.

Not to sound like a negative Ned, but none of us know if we'll make it to the release of our next favorite game. :/ Death comes whenever it wants, uninvited.

@mycatismilk: True... but the timeframe we're given is less... absolute. I could die tomorrow, I could die 40 years from now. This guy is being told that 2 years is his tops.

That's gotta take a toll on someone. And yeah the cynic in me says "Gearbox just looking for some easy good PR here" but even still it's nice that they're doing it. I can't imagine what my priorities would be if I was told 2 years, so good on this guy for wanting to see this game.

@Ayato_Kamina_1: I too don't wanna be negative but this is a odd thing to care about. Esp for a 37 year old...

i guess some Borderlands fans weren't as offended as i was w/ B3 & The Telltale crappycrap & the TinyTina double D&D travesty..

B2 was top of the world & Gearbox instead got arrogant and made that awful Moba Overwatch failure. a Failure everyone saw coming btw... Gearbox waited 6 years to even start B3 & then rushed it & the end product wasn't even good enough for me to finish 1 playthrough.

COMPARED TO E DOING EVERY B2 character & twice for the Robot Girl..

When i got the Borderlands itch i went to ThePreSequel & actually had almost 6 weeks of fun with it.
