Borderlands 4 Narrative Director Doesn't Want Skibidi Or Hawk Tuah Jokes In Game

The developer "wanted to put my hand down the sink grinder" when asked about a possible gun named Hawk 2A.

There might be toilets in Borderlands 4, but the game's narrative director loathes the idea of this leading to skibidi jokes. This is all part of trying to cut back on the "overabundance of toilet humor" from Borderlands 3, according to Sam Winkler.

Eurogamer noticed that the Borderlands 4 narrative director was discussing the tone of the upcoming game on X. Winkler replied to one question about how he was critical of Borderlands 3's toilet humor and then voiced his thoughts on including recent internet sensation jokes. "I'm not gonna say there's no toilets, but if the word skibidi ships in the game under my watch, I'm gonna cry real tears," said Winkler. "[Forbes writer] Paul Tassi joked that we were gonna have a gun called Hawk 2A, and a fellow dev asked me if it was real, and I wanted to put my hand down the sink grinder."

At The Game Awards last week, Gearbox unveiled the first gameplay trailer for the looter-shooter. Borderlands 4 will feature a seamless world and new movement mechanics that will "make it hard for players to go back," according to creative director Graeme Timmins.

Last month, a terminally ill fan got to check out Borderlands 4 early, courtesy of a wish fulfilled by Gearbox. Caleb McAlpine thought "it was awesome" and thanked everyone for making the experience a possibility.

Borderlands 4 is set to launch next year for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

The narrative director on Borderlands 4 doesn't seem to know he's working on Borderlands 4.

I was told Hawk Tuah was the next big thing, and upon watching the video I felt genuinely bad about the state of memes. Our grandchildren will never experience eBaum's World on a CRT monitor over a 56K connection. We have failed them as a society.

Skibidi will not be a thing for long. It would be really stupid to include it in a game, because 10 years from now; when someone is playing the game, they’re going to be like, “What the hell is skibidi?” No memes she be used in games.

@stickemup: It seems you're unfamiliar with the Borderlands franchise.

@Lord_Sesshy: It’s just nonsense. Anyone suggesting “skibidy” or a Hawk 2A gun in a game should be put on a time out, and made to sit in a corner, facing the wall for 5 minutes.

@vatususreturns: I envy you for not getting it. Don’t even bother looking it up. It’s very stupid. We made another talentless airhead famous. That’s all.

@vatususreturns: You're not missing much. Its just some white trash girl talking about what she does whilst performing fellatio.

@vatususreturns: Why do you think only English native speakers would understand this? You seem to have perfect English to me.

@gr4h4m833zy: I'm not an English native speaker. Sometimes some cultural jokes get lost in translation

@vatususreturns: Hawk Tuah girl. It's really stupid and was never funny.

Obviously it has its fans, but personally the humor in Borderlands never worked for me. It just wasn't funny most of the time.

@Dezuria: I think it was funny for about 3 seconds, because it was a genuine, candid response. Like everything else though, it was beaten to death immediately. Not everyone needs (deserves?) to be famous and should really just go away.
