Borderlands GotY Remaster Releases This Week With More Weapons, Improvements

Gearbox is bringing a new way to revisit the original Borderlands.

Gearbox teased that it would have multiple new games to showcase during its PAX East panel, and that indeed proved to be the case. The big news was Borderlands 3, but we don't yet know when that will be releasing. What we do know the release date for is an enhanced re-release of an existing game, Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition--and it's out in just a few days.

Despite some technical issues hampering the reveal during the panel, Gearbox unveiled this new version of Borderlands GotY Edition. It's not a mere port--it also packs in new content, including more weapons, in addition to a variety of other improvements to gameplay. It releases next week, and you might be able to get it for free, provided you already own the game on PC. You can see a trailer some screenshots below.

Now Playing: Borderlands Remastered Gameplay Live

This new Game of the Year Edition is described as the "brand-new definitive version." It's set for release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and features the same basic content as the original game, complete with all four of its DLC packs: The Zombie Island of Doctor Ned, Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, and Claptrap's New Robot Revolution.

The Game of the Year Edition will feature visual improvements suited to the new platforms. Gearbox boasts that PS4 and Xbox One X players (and presumably those with adequate PC hardware) can play in 4K and HDR, but all platforms will include "improved lighting, textures, and character models."

No Caption Provided

Beyond visual changes, there are quality-of-life improvements and changes coming to impact gameplay, too. An optional minimap similar to the one found in Borderlands 2 is being introduced, while inventory management will be overhauled. You'll now be able to lock weapons that you want to ensure stay safe, while those you don't care about can be labeled as junk to make disposing of them more straightforward. Similarly, you'll no longer have to worry about picking up ammo, money, and health, as that will now be done automatically.

A handful of new guns are being added. Six "named, custom-skinned" Legendary-tier weapons will be available as drops from bosses or through the use of Golden Keys. Those keys tie into the Shift rewards system, which lets you cash in keys for "special in-game items and rewards" similar to later games in the series. If you've played Borderlands 2 or The Pre-Sequel on PS4, Xbox One, or PC, you'll be entitled to 75 Golden Keys for free here, as well as two "randomly selected" new weapons.

Another new element is the ability to customize your character. Whereas the game previously only allowed you to select colors, you can now choose one of five different head options for each of the four characters.

And finally, Gearbox says it's heeding complaints from fans and will update the campaign's final boss. It should now be "more engaging, challenging, and rewarding."

Game of the Year Edition is coming quite soon--it releases for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on April 3, which is just a few days away. It will be available physically and digitally on console, while the PC version is digital only. However, if you already own Borderlands on Steam, PC players will get this updated version for free.

Alongside this, Gearbox shared a variety of other news. Regarding Borderlands specifically, it confirmed Borderlands 3 and announced visual improvements coming to Borderlands: The Handsome Collection. With all of this coming, Gearbox has dubbed this the Year of Borderlands. That might suggest Borderlands 3 is releasing this year, but at this point, no release date has been specified. More information on that game will be shared on April 3.

The Game of the Year Edition news doesn't come as a complete surprise, as a ratings board listing last year suggested just such a re-release was coming. However, it is encouraging to see this is more than just a mere port. Alongside this, Gearbox also finally announced Borderlands 3, along with free visual improvements coming to Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel.

Borderlands was originally released in 2009, so this announcement comes just ahead of the series' 10-year anniversary. The Game of the Year version followed that in 2010, bundling the base game with its four DLC packs.

To all remaster haters: do not touch this even if you buy it. Make sure you only play the original forever and ever always for eternity.

This will be excellent if it will allow setting the FOV. I uninstalled the game because of the fussiness that occurs when you change the FOV by editing the .ini file (it tends to reset regularly and doesn't work properly with vehicles). Incorporating the improved mini-map from Borderlands 2 would be sweet as well.

Finally! I was waiting for this to hit PS4! I bought the Handsome Collection, but haven't touched it because I've not played the first game. Now I can.

Borderlands 1 was the BEST of this series, looking forward to playing it again.

But i REALLY hope they didn't mess with the healing system, to make it like the one from BL2.

And, as "foozlefop" said in a comment below, same goes for the gun mechanics.

I like to control when and how much i heal, depending on the way a fight goes. And i despise it when a producer takes that freedom away from me (same as Blizzard did with that Diablo 3 disaster)

I eagerly pre-ordered BL2 before it appeared, but I was quickly disappointed by the changes they made to the base gameplay.

Bad gun mechanics corroborated with healing "when you kill something" ('cause they removed the simple option to carry a few damned health kits) equals a good number of unnecessary deaths, especially on the later parts of the game. Deaths and wasted time that would have been easily avoided if they kept the mechanics from the first game.

And the regeneration they said they introduced to make up for the lack of carrying health kits, was an bad joke most of the time.

I played BL2, even finished it (hell... i payed for it, might as well play it once) - but it was a huge step in the wrong direction for the series. The first game surpasses it in every aspect that counts, imho.

When the pre-sequel was announced, i didn't even bother buying/playing it, even when it got heavily discounted - not worth my time.

Remains to be seen how BL3 will be, but i don't think they will change those mechanics back to the ones from the first game... pity.

@lonesamurai00: the switch to cell shaded graphics was the thing that saved the game originally... however no one does need to like it, each has their own taste... personally i am for it and in borderlands' case, it gave way to much needed computing headroom to pull the scope of this game, i remember when it used to sport "realistic" graphics during development time and it just, well how do phrase it, blew...

@creepshow2: Um, sorry little guy but I believe that Anthem is a multiplayer game, and I never play any multiplayer games except for Star Citizen, and even while on Star Citizen I don't want to play with other people. I just enjoy playing the jaw dropping graphics that the game offers. No, you would have played Anthem long before I ever would because I make a point never to play games online where interaction with people is paramount.

Plus I ain't about art style, I'm all about graphics.

@lonesamurai00: "Plus I ain't about art style, I'm all about graphics." .... Bro, the graphics are determined by the art style. Cell shading is what the Borderlands series utilizes and they have graphical fidelity depending on the systems they run on. On the PC, you obviously have the best settings with high quality antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, 2HD or 4K resolution support etc. So to me, those are graphical options that would make a game like Borderlands look gorgeous.

So I am not sure what you are on about. Not every game can look like Battlefield 5 or Metro Exodus. It all depends on the proprietary engine the devs used to make their games.

Having said that, I would ONLY want to play a Borderlands game if it uses cell shading and not otherwise.

@Barighm: What do you mean what am I talking about? The one thing that has always kept me from buying the game essentially is the way it game looks, even at a deep price cut on Steam I never bought it. and I'm talking about the cell shaded art style, that's all. Not my thing is all, so it's hideous to me.

@lonesamurai00: Again you are on about cell shading. I respect your opinion on it but disagree on the fact you avoided to play it due to that. Anyway, whatever suits you.

@starjay009: Hey man I'm not disrespecting the game or the gameplay, or even the game as a whole, just the graphics and the look of the game that's all. From the first time I saw the game I just thought that it looked ugly and it has kinda stayed there for me. On the other hand I think that the Sly Cooper series of games look great because both the characters and the world within have an appropriate cartoonish look and so they look right at home with the cell shaded look - that's how I feel about it.

The gun mechanics on the first were so superior to the second. The gun play was faster (fire rate), more accurate and overall so much better than two, which saw the gun mechanic slowed and dumbed down in my opinion. I don't mind them improving on all other aspects of the game. but if they took out the original gun mechanics and swapped with two, well, what utter poppycock that is! I hope they didn't ruin it by messing with it!

@AyatollaofRnR: probably not worth porting it over so the five people who play games on the Switch can play it.. Not to mention these games are a bit too mature for the Switch 5 - 10 year old player base.

@masterfrankgrimes: considering this is going to be free for owners of the original game I don't see what the issue is.. it's not like they are reselling the game.. maybe these new additions will get a few additional sales, probably not.. Many people loved the original game nothing wrong having another reason to love a game you once played..

I love the original game over the rest, but a few new guns and a rejigged final boss isn't really worth leveling up all over again.
