Bourne license escapes from Activision

Ludlum Entertainment reacquires rights to make games based on spy novels that spawned popular Matt Damon film franchise.

Activision Publishing began the week by picking and choosing a handful of Vivendi Games properties to bring on board the newly merged Activision Blizzard bandwagon. That left those games and properties whose names weren't called in a state of limbo as the publisher examines its options and likely tries selling them to other publishers.

One such property was the Jason Bourne license, based on the spy novels of the late Robert Ludlum. Vivendi Games acquired the license in January of 2007 and released its first game based on the spy, The Bourne Conspiracy, last month.

That will go down as the company's last Bourne project, as Ludlum Entertainment today announced it had reacquired the rights to make games based on Ludlum's novels from Activision Blizzard. However, the company doesn't want to hold those rights for long. The company wants to find new partners "capable of fully exploiting the multiplatform potential of the Ludlum content and storylines."

Despite the search for a new ally in the gaming industry, Ludlum Entertainment CEO (and executor of the author's estate) Jeffrey Weiner expressed his satisfaction with Vivendi and the job it did on the debut Bourne game.

"Our colleagues at Vivendi Games did a tremendous job of capturing the spirit and allure of Robert Ludlum's writing with The Bourne Conspiracy, and the gaming community's strong response is clear indication that future Ludlum games will deliver both popularity and profitability for years to come."

[UPDATE] A Variety report on the loss of the license including a bit of information on what Vivendi had planned for the Bourne license. The publisher reportedly had Radical working on "Treadstone," an online game set in the agency that originally trained Jason Bourne. Production on that title has been halted, but the report says it could wind up in the hands of a new publisher.

The demo was really good, but I don't want to pay full price for a single player only game. Also, what is up with all the hate towards it?

The game was utterly terrible so I just hope somebody else can do something good with Bourne.

Yeah the films were awesome, I'm still playing the game. I'm not too worried who gets the licence as long as they do it justice, really good justice mind you. What I really want is 2 or 3 more games, one that follows the Supremacy, then the Ultimatum. Maybe a final one with something after the Ultimatum in consultation with the Ludlum Estate. I just think all things Bourne are just great :)

I hope that this License gets the care that it deserves from whichever party decides to publish the next Bourne game. It's hard to think that another developer is going to get a hold of the franchise considering that "The Bourne Conspiracy" is actually a pretty damn good game, And this is coming from someone who can't stand the Bourne movies. (You can thank Matt Damon for that) Also, Lamprey is right, It's the switch between Infinity Ward and Treyarch that makes or breaks (respectively) the COD franchise.

I would've liked to have seen Vivendi improve / build upon The Bourne Conspiracy. I think they did a better job than expected. I hope whoever picks up the license does the franchise justice.

@gamepro345 "too bad the only Call of Duty games by activision are the inferior ones" actually, Activision published all the Call of Duty games, it's the developers they switch off between between every other game

I liked the demo of the Bourne Conspiracy title. Not enough to pay 60 for it, but still seemed pretty solid, especially for a movie tie in sorta title.I'll buy it when it gets reduced.

too bad the only Call of Duty games by activision are the inferior ones. lol, but thats beside the point, I thought the Bourne Conspiracy was a great game, as far as movie titles go, and as a fan of the series it was alot of fun to play, and im hoping another developer picks it up and makes a sequel.

You're missing one of the crafts there (the better one tbh) and appear to have disregarded Diablo (also superior to Warcraft) as well. Seems a shame to try and defend a company and then miss out the two best series as evidence for your statement.

Activision Blizzard is HUGE. They're currently involved with many brands. Tony Hawk, Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, James Bond, Spider-Man, Doom, Quake, Warcraft, Crash, Spryo... People don't realize just how massive the company really is.

Thats a pretty good question wwonka666... It would seem that Ghostbusters is shapeing up to be at the very least a moderate success, if not a really big hit. Kinda strange they would pass on it, but oh well someone else will pick it up.

well, being how they just got the rights they obviously hadn't made anything yet, so I imagine this'll take another 2 years for the next game, nothing to get excited about yet, they should have been smart and planned a multiple game deal from the beginning, though, i see what Activision is doing, they do the same thing for the COD games, they're gonna get two studios working on this game, as their project times are about 2 years, so when the next game comes out in two years, about a year afterwards the sequel will be released, and then that sequel will be released and so on, and the two developers will alternate each year in releasing their 2 year long projects

The first game was an OK game but now they are going to have someone else doing another? I thought that the reason for continuing on with another game would be to allow the devs to make improvements to what was originally produced making the gameplay better. Now another studio is going to start from scratch.....well good luck because I liked the movies and will be getting the game very soon.
