Braid entwines PCs March 31

Jonathan Blow's top-rated puzzle-platformer extends to Microsoft desktops via Stardock's Impulse distribution portal next month for $14.95

It's odd to think that one of the highest-rated games of 2008 was a downloadable title made by a single individual who worked independently of any major publisher. But it is what it is, and Jonathan Blow's puzzle-platformer Braid for the Xbox 360 continues to gain recognition into 2009, having been nominated in a number of categories for both the Interactive Achievement Awards and the Game Developers Choice Awards.

Tim's back, and he has brought his keys.
Tim's back, and he has brought his keys.

Soon, PC gamers will have a chance to see what all the fuss is about, as Stardock has announced that the game will be available through its online distribution platform Impulse beginning March 31. It was originally priced at $19.95, but Blow said on his personal blog that the price has been reduced to $14.95 in response to outcry from certain sectors of the Internet.

"Some people have asked why I picked the $20 price point," Blow wrote. "The answer is, I just looked at some comparable games on the PC and saw how much they were charging. Crayon Physics Deluxe, World of Goo, and Aquaria, among many others, are all priced at $20. It seemed reasonable not to charge less for Braid than for those games. But ultimately, I don't care that much about the PC release price."

Blow went on to note that the Xbox Live edition of the game was "nicely profitable," and the goal of the PC release is simply to disseminate his title to a wider audience. For more information on the highly rated XBLA edition of the game, check out GameSpot's review of Braid.

I bought Braid yesterday, and I seriously LOVE it. It's the most unique game I've ever played, and while the story is a little confusing, it conspired with the visuals and music to make a really moving piece. So, end statement: If you don't have a 360, you really should try the game. It's wonderful.

are you kidding? you never saw what was so good about braid? obviously you haven't played it. The game requires you to think in different ways that no other game has ever forced you to. It's amazingly addictive and rewards the player after figuring out it's well placed puzzles. I've never seen any game like it and it's on sale right now on xb live. I just got it yesterday for 800 ms points. Honestly, some of the puzzles at the beginning i though weren't possible until i revisited them later on and figured them out. This game has amazing visuals and is truely the most unique game i've ever played.

Not meaning to start a fanwar but the precise reason the 360 is not worth getting - damn near anything for it ends up on PC anyway (Halo, GoW, now Braid) This is not the case for Nintendo and Sony...

When he says he doesn't care about the money, he means the $5 difference. Everyone has bills to pay, you guys need to stop nit-picking every ***d*mn thing he says, he's not a politician (thank god)...

I find it pretty ridiculous that so many people are getting hung-up over five dollars. If you're so broke that the difference between $10 and $15 will tip you into insolvency, I suggest you sell your PC and most of your clothes to buy bread, and drink rainwater out of the nearest gutter. I played Braid on the 360, and I thought it was fabulous. Yeah, it didn't take a million years to complete, but it was very, very enjoyable. I remember the bad ol' days of the Super NES, when you could drop $70 on a cartridge and finish it in a weekend. To me, paying $15 for something great, even if it doesn't last all that long, is no big deal.

And you say his game(s?) cost a lot in relation to similar games, but did you even read this article? He was saying that he chose the $20 price point because it IS what similar games cost on the PC. And even then he's lowered it anyway. Yea, it cost $15 on LiveArcade, but thats not unheard of anymore for the higher quality titles. Its still worth every penny and he deserves it.

Maybe it just me but Jonathan Blow not striking me as a very honest person... First, he said MS chose the price point on the Live version (15 dollars) when he wanted to charge less. (10 dollars) Now, its coming to the PC and his first inclination is to charge twice what he (supposedly) wanted to charge on the 360...? As I said, maybe its just me, but that just doesn't add up...

This is great news. Finally those too cheap to buy something this good will get a chance to pirate it. On a real note though, the fact this is being distributed by Stardock makes this news that much more awesome. I hope they reap even more success with this move.

Nice, now all none owning Xbox 360 people can play this excellent game :) For a man that is "so independent" and doesn't care so much about money, I think it's strange that most of the news and quotes from him are about money. Anyway nothing wrong with making money, but he shouldn't portray himself as he doesn't care about it since his games costs quiet much in relation to similar games.

These comments worry me.. I recommend you all type "Stardock" and "piracy" into Google and read a couple of the articles. I also recommend you all read the Stardock Gaming Bill of Rights. -Gamers shall have the right to return games that don't work with their computers for a full refund. -Gamers shall have the right to demand that games be released in a finished state. -Gamers shall have the right to expect meaningful updates after a game's release. Gamers shall have the right to demand that download managers and updaters not force themselves to run or be forced to load in order to play a game. -Gamers shall have the right to expect that the minimum requirements for a game will mean that the game will play adequately on that computer. -Gamers shall have the right to expect that games won't install hidden drivers or other potentially harmful software without their consent. Gamers shall have the right to re-download the latest versions of the games they own at any time. Gamers shall have the right to not be treated as potential criminals by developers or publishers. -Gamers shall have the right to demand that a single-player game not force them to be connected to the Internet every time they wish to play. -Gamers shall have the right that games which are installed to the hard drive shall not require a CD/DVD to remain in the drive to play.

HappyApryl, Impulse is a quality service that rivals even Steam. Stardock is fast becoming the Valve of strategy on the PC. I recommend checking it out, along with Galactic Civilizations and Sins of a Solar Empire.

havokmaster It's a shame huh? But seriously, it should have been put on Steam, not that Steam stops piracy but A LOT of established PC gamers already have it, so Braid would have been a click away. But NOPE, I can also see a good deal of those established PC gamers pirating this game.

This is one of the issues with PC gaming. Stop trying to copy Steam, good lord, this game should be on Steam. I shouldn't need multiple programs to access downloaded games, geez. I won't be buying it, unless I get really bored. Sucks, I was extremely excited for this, but seriously I know PC is an open platform but I am SICK of developers and publishers not cooperating! Ok I should calm down lol.

Impulse is a great service and worth signing up for. I don't really care about Braid very much, but it's pretty cool to see Stardock's service picking up a game that will no doubt sell quite a bit.

Wow. It's not just a 2-D side-scroller people. It's a really creative game and the ending to it was just amazing. Was really open to interpretation. If you're already saying that a 2-D game isn't worth you're money, then you're just being close-minded.
