Brandon Sanderson's Final Secret Novel Is Now Available At Amazon, And It's Steeply Discounted

Fans can now own a hardcover edition of The Sunlit Man, which was previously only available for Kickstarter backers.

A new hardcover edition of Brandon Sanderson's sci-fi novel The Sunlit Man just launched (March 5), and you can grab a copy for only $21 (was $30). Physical editions of the book were previously exclusive to Kickstarter backers, but this new publishing run is available to everyone.

The Sunlit Man is a standalone novel set in the far future of the Cosmere universe shared by many of Sanderson's other fantasy and sci-fi novels. The book follows Nomad, a world-hopping immortal trapped on the planet Canticle, where the people live in giant floating cities that are constantly on the move to outrun the sun's flesh-melting temperatures.

The Sunlit Man is the fourth and final book in Sanderson's Secret Projects series. Back in 2022, Sanderson's publishing house Dragonsteel Entertainment held a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign to fund four secret Sanderson novels--aka the Secret Projects series--that would be released throughout 2023. The Sunlit Man and the other three novels were previously available to everyone in ebook format, but this new hardcover edition marks the first time non-backers can buy physical versions of the book.

The other three Secret Projects books--Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard's Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter--are also available in hardcover for 30% discounts at Amazon. Paperback editions are also available for preorder.

Sanderson's Cosmere universe is also home to his two most popular series: Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive. You can save on box sets for both series at Amazon. Sanderson's various young adult series are also available in box set format. You'll find links to all of the box set deals below.

Seriously. This is absurd. People gave him $41 million just to keep writing novels he was writing anyway. As a fan of Sanderson, this is disgusting to me. You should all be angry.

@deathbychickens: Nope. He works hard and earns his money. Totally legit. And the poster below is correct...the money purchased people actual things, not just him writing a book "he was going to write anyway". You are either disinformed or deliberately trying to disinform.

@deathbychickens: You don't seem to realise that Kickstarter in this case was specifically used as a method of preordering already completed books and optional merch. People gave him 41 million dollars in exchange for what they viewed as 41 million dollars worth of books/merch. Brandon produced and published all of the books through his own company (of 50 employees), not a publisher, and as such needed to know the number of books they would be producing well ahead of time. The books were actually made cheaper through the Kickstarter than they otherwise would have been due to them being able to buy everything in bulk.

Brandon has a video on his YouTube channel explaining the decision as well as being very open about his reasoning in interviews.

@lockorlarry: I did do a little research before making my comments. I saw a lot of headlines about self publishing "secret" books, etc. I understand a little better now, so it's my fault for not putting more effort into the situation. My initial reaction was 'why does one of the most famous and successful authors on earth need to do Kickstarter?'. I understand now that by "self publishing" they meant his own privately owned label. That's different to say the least lol.

He's one of my favorite authors. I've written creatively on and off for 25 years. And I own 6 of his paperbacks, and way more of his audiobooks. So I respect Sanderson as a writer, and above all as a storyteller.

I missed this whole Kickstarter campaign during covid cause I was distracted by the utter insanity at my job. Seeing news stories about it now just confused me, made me assume the worst about Sanderson. My bad.

@deathbychickens: No problem. The news coverage was generally super vague (probably because they didn't understand the Kickstarter themselves), so I don't blame you for the confusion. Thanks for the polite reply and good luck with your creative writing!

@lockorlarry: No, thank you for your polite responses. I've seen authors I greatly respect do things that seemed wrong. At face value this looked the same. I'm glad to know I was wrong.

@deathbychickens: Even if was the way you assumed, why is that a bad thing? People were just buying books. It doesn't really matter if he was already writing them, you still have to pay to read them.

I'm flabbergasted by this. I made an account specifically to comment on this article. Sanderson is a good writer. I own many of his books, and enjoyed them all. But, WTF? Kickstarter? The dude is a very successful, rich author. And he does a Kickstarter campaign to "fund" another series? Does anyone else see the problem here? I just lost all respect for Brandon Sanderson because of this debacle.
