Bravely Default - 3DS Game of the Year

Bravely Default

The 3DS has another solid year under its belt and it continues to lead the charge as the best-selling handheld for a good reason: there is a wealth of wonderful games in almost every genre. 2014 saw the release of numerous games that deserve special recognition, including Nintendo's own Super Smash Bros., which is a fantastic portable recreation of a series that's traditionally reserved for consoles. It manages to capture the frantic nature of multiplayer combat with minimal sacrifices along the way, and it delivers a competitive experience that's practically unparalleled within the 3DS's library. Square Enix's Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call shone bright as well, offering a bounty of enjoyable music from the entire back catalog of the Final Fantasy series and wrapping it into a nostalgia-soaked rhythm game. With dozens of classic characters to level up and customize thanks to a collection of RPG systems, Curtain Call is a unique blend of elements from a series with a spectacular history at its back, and whether or not you're a fan of Final Fantasy, the number of musical masterpieces laying in wait lifts Curtain Call above the realm of mere fan service.

Ultimately, our debate for the best 3DS game of 2014 came down to two nominees: Shovel Knight and Bravely Default. Both offer excellent experiences that tap into the past of their respective genres, but they also incorporate fresh concepts that make them special games on their own terms. Shovel Knight is a side-scrolling adventure with pseudo-8-bit charm and a super catchy chiptune soundtrack, but it rises above its nostalgic trappings with a funny, lighthearted script and a Dark Souls-like death and resurrection system that's the perfect accompaniment to its above average difficulty. On the other hand, Bravely Default stands out as one of the most inventive and approachable Japanese RPGs to come along in a long time. You charge through a familiar string of towns and dungeons, and it even taps into Final Fantasy's proclivity for plots surrounding god-like crystals, but it revisits these tropes with care and avoids becoming another "me too" RPG.

Now Playing: See our Winner for 3DS Game of the Year

More importantly, Bravely Default's combat system and presentation are the best arguments for it to take home the award for the best 3DS game of 2014. The ability to sacrifice turns in the present to use in the future gives Bravely Default a unique feel, and though you run the risk of being cut down by your enemies, you may gain an advantage over creatures that are too strong to take down via traditional methods. Bravely Default is an innovative game that also manages to deliver classic elements in a new way, and while it has pacing issues during the latter half, that fact doesn't detract from the dozens of hours of greatness that come before. Weighing these facts against Shovel Knight's positive qualities, we ultimately came to the conclusion that Bravely Default is the best 3DS game to have come out in 2014. It's a fantastic RPG and a wonderful game all around.

What? The game where the entire last half is a recycling job? Any of the others would be preferable. The first half of BD is great, even though the story is predictable and uninspired. After that, it's all downhill.

I'm one of the unfortunately people who wanted to play this game but could never justify setting aside the (then) $250 for one, so I've sat on the sidelines. I kind of wish now that I would have set aside the money anyway and tried out some of these GOTY nominees.

Really? Out of the nominated games I would put Bravely Default last.

Its an okay game, but nowhere near a GOTY. Its repetitive and while the game looks great, everything is a painting, there is no exploration at all. The only good things it has going for it is its job system and some QoL options like being able to manually set the encounter rate at any moment.

Personally, from those games I would go Smash > Shovel Knight > Curtain Call > Proffesor Layton > Bravely Default.

No Pokemon ORAS nomination? WTF!? Yet Curtain Call, a game no one cares about is nominated? Funny how Mario Kart 8 won Wii U GOTY over Bayonetta 2 and Smash Bros for WIi U due for being more popular and accessible and not quality. Yet in the 3DS awards, the rarest game wins, and the most popular and accessible one, Pokemon ORAS, isn't even nominated! WTF!?

Shovel Knight is an EXCELLENT game from beginning to end, but it's just not quite "Game of the Year" material. If you don't have a 3DS, pick it up on GOG.com or Steam on your PC -- almost any PC can run it.

kinda funny that the 3DS's GOTY it's a game that looks and plays like it was made in the 90's. I think this game was voted GOTY on nostalgia alone by the weaboos at Gamespot.

The game so good that the developers make you replay it four times before finishing it once.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Lol that'd be an incredibly boring way to determine GotY awards.

"Hey, lets just look at what the reviewer gave it and award whatever game had the best score! Screw the discussion and debate to be had, just stick with the original score!"

<< LINK REMOVED >> so? If you actually read the scoring methodology, it's based on the genre and time of release.

Does a 9 sports game deserve GOTY award over an 8 puzzle platformer?

Bravely Default was good, but not the best. It was just really generic with an excellent combat and job system. I will probably think Persona Q once I can play it but out of this list, Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright.

Voting clearly shows that Smash Bros won, yet BD still won? I chose this and wanted this but wth if you're gonna have us vote on the winner, at least stand by that. The choices this year all around were pathetic and uninspired, and then you tell us we can at least have a say on which terrible titles we want, then you bait and switch. If you're gonna just end up dictating who the winners are in the end, at least make Inquisition not win literally every next "award"

I think BD was the most disappointing game of the year for me. I could understand liking it if you haven't played a traditional jrpg since FFX, but so many games have improved on the formula since then. It doesn't help that it isn't as good as the SNES rpgs it is trying to emulate either.

Bravely Default is a mixed bag for me. I completely love the style, music, combat, and sheer play-ability. It's phenomenal. But the dependence of, to put it bluntly, perverted characters like the Sage or Ringabel just throws me off. I just don't click with that kind of humor. The drama is great, but hearing characters consistently gawk at females and such didn't resonate with me when I was 13, and it definitely doesn't resonate with me now. A bit of a soapbox, yes, but it's a complaint nonetheless. Otherwise, it's an amazing experience, for sure!

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I don't find it offensive as much as just juvenile and humorless in a game that otherwise doesn't carry that tone. To me, it's out of place. When I want offensive, I pop in South Park: Stick of Truth, knowing that the perversions at least fit within the context of the game...and who are we kidding, that game was all the right kinds of wrong.

I wasn't able to get through the first go around...I found the story and characters boring. Not to say it wasn't a good game overall, just not my JRPG cup of tea. Maybe my expectations were too high...

My vote would go to Shovel Knight but that's because I played Bravely Default already last year and IMO game of the year along with Link Between Worlds. But even if BD is a great game, I just want something like that but done on f***ing console/PC already

Guess I'm in the minority of those who couldn't get into the game. I traded it in after playing a couple of hours. My personal vote goes to Fantasy Life. That game is just too much fun.

Bravely Default is a great RPG. Really the only issue I have is the pacing in the latter half of the game. Can't wait for Bravely Second though. Wish they'd announce a release date!

Still, I agree, Bravely Default turned out to be a great game in my book.
