Brutal Legend Sequel Could Happen if Psychonauts 2 Does Well

"We can't make any promises."

Brutal Legend fans hopeful for a sequel have been given another glimmer of hope from Double Fine. The developer has now said if Psychonauts 2 is a success, then the company may attempt to revisit the rock music-themed action game franchise with another installment.

"We've always said that we wanted to make sequels to both Psychonauts and Brutal Legend," Double Fine said on Psychonauts 2's crowdfunding page (via VideoGamer.com). "We can't make any promises, but if Psychonauts is a success for us, then perhaps Brutal Legend 2 will be more possible?"

The crowdfunding campaign for Psychonauts 2 started last week on the new platform Fig, which offers equity alongside traditional rewards-based backing. It's off to a fast start, raising nearly $2 million in just a few days. For lots more on Psychonauts 2, you can read GameSpot's in-depth interview with Tim Schafer.

The original Brutal Legend--published by Electronic Arts in 2009--cost around $25 million to develop. It remains Double Fine's best-selling game ever. Schafer said in January 2014 that raising that much money--or more--for a sequel "might be tricky."

Schafer also previously teased that he'd like to explore Brutal Legend's Lionwhyte character (voiced by Judas Priest singer Rob Halford) in a new Brutal Legend game or DLC. Brutal Legend main character Eddie Riggs was voiced by Jack Black; he "might be up for" returning to the character for a sequel.

Why do we have to buy psyconaughts in order to get a Brutal Legend sequel? I never played the first psyconaughts so I don't have much hype for sequel, but I loved Brutal Legend, played on PS3 at launch and then bought it again the second it hit steam, didn't even wait for a sale. So... can't they figure out another way to see if people want Brutal Legend 2? The two games aren't even related. And if Brutal Legend has sold the best, why isn't it the one being considered for a sequel first?

EDIT:

In addition, really they could bring the idea to EA again and have a publisher help them with development again. If Brutal Legend sold decently I wouldn't think it would be that hard to convince them to fund it again.

I adored Brutal Legend, but I can't help but feel like this is a carrot on a stick to get Psychonauts (another game I liked, but not nearly as much as Brutal Legend) funded. It feels kinda, eh, sleezy to me.

I like Double Fine, i like Schafer, but i find what they are doing despicable.

So, basically, Double Fine stopped actually spending money to make games, the consumer is the ones that actually pays for it. It's a win-win situation for them.

I'm totally in for both. Brutal Legend was a fkn amazingly fun game from start to finish. Sure the RTS parts confused a lot of people, but perhaps with some more (optional) hand-holding it'll catch on more effectively next time.

Me playing Brutal Legend: Hey this is a cool action platformer set in a Heavy Metal album cover world *gets to strategy part* oh uh why?

It's just too bad Tim Schafer is in charge, you could give the man $20 for coffee and he'd come back with ten gallons of creamer and say he ran out of money.

Don't know why all the hate. The strategy parts of Brutal Legend were a little convoluted, but still enjoyable. Maybe get some help from Kuju, the people that made Battalion Wars, to streamline things a bit.

Brütal Legend was great, except some of the RTS parts, could of been done better. But otherwise a truly unique little gem.

Too little too late Schafer, with the crap you've pulled you won't get any of my money.

As a metal head gamer...I NEED THIS GAME TO HAPPEN! I am gonna pledge as much as I can for it to happen! But for Psychonauts...no, sorry, it simply isn't my thing. I don't understand how the success of psychonauts is connected with Brutal Legend 2, which is a game with a legion of metalhead followers.

@Gamer_4_Fun: Hells yes!! I still play Brutal Legend from time to time and its as brilliant as always. I also love Psychonauts so its a win win for me if both Brutal Legend 2 and Psychonauts 2 become a reality. Take my money Double Fine! (Oh, and uhh, please don't make a mess of it like that other cancelled space station game preferably)

Haven't played the original games of either. Bring them over to the Xbox One for a reasonable price and I'll totally buy them!:D

And of course I know these are on PC, but that's not my preferred platform.

@metallinatus: I know, but I probably won't play it unless it's BC. The only games I'm going back to right now on my 360 are RDR (never played before until a week ago), Tales of Vesperia, and Batman: Arkham Origins (still need to beat it).

If it goes on a crazy sale, I'll probably pick it up.

@Saidrex: And this has changed from how it has always been how? Them telling you this up front?

FYI, Bungie has a clause in their contract with Activision on Destiny that if it meets certain sales, then they get a Marathon game funded.

@ps3gamer1234: Because it's Tim Schafer. Double Fine have never used a publisher except to arrange distribution of physical copies.
