Bungie on Destiny for PC, microtransactions

Developer says bringing game to PC would spread itself too thin; game will avoid "pay-for-power type stuff" for microtransactions.

In a new interview with IGN, Bungie discussed the reason why Destiny has not been announced for PC and how the studio is approaching microtransactions for the upcoming next-generation first-person shooter action game.

Concerning PC, community manager Eric Osborne said shipping Destiny for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 is already a challenge.

"It's a huge challenge to ship four platforms and a massive opportunity to reach a new audience," he said. "We know there are a lot of people out there asking for PC and we know that there are a lot of gamers that would willingly give us money, but what we have to do is make sure we’re focused enough to bring a good experience to any platform that we ship on.

"What we 100 percent are not going to do is spread ourselves so thin that it negatively harms the other platforms," he added. "So right now we have the four platforms, which is a lot to focus on."

Bungie previously said a PC version of Destiny was up for consideration, but made clear that the studio is unwilling to develop for one platform at the expense of another.

Asked about the possibility for Destiny to employ microtransactions, Osborne did not give a yes or no answer, but said Bungie is not looking to "nickel and dime" players or offer an advantage to those who choose to pay.

"We've not announced anything on the microtransaction front but our goal is to absolutely make sure that when we deliver a game for $60 that's a great experience no matter what type of player you are," he said. "So we're not looking at any pay-for-power type stuff. That's what I hear as a player when people say they’re worried about models and schemes that nickel and dime people; we're not going to do that."

A beta for Destiny will launch on all announced platforms in early 2014, before the full game rolls out later that year.

So bungie is afraid of showing their poor programming capabillity and decide not to expose their weakness. Going to the easy to develope not forcing themselves. For me, is like no sence of competition because there are and are going to be more trully well worked games using 8 cores, 16k texture mapping and all the ram memory you have available, and that scares them.

This is absolute BS. No PC version makes zero business sense.

It is the other way round. Releasing the game for PC, will make the PC version only to become negatively harmed, because it's always the same sh't around the developers. The PC version is just a f'cking porting of the console version and not vice versa. Trying to tell something else here just to excuse from real matters is not funny.

This is just trash talking coming out from Bungie, seriously, I've never heard such a punk. Oh, hold on, yes I did, it was that trash talking nonsense about something like Xbone and PS4 would be more powerful than the PC hahaha... everything, the same garbage news.

Why don't they just release the game on PS4, Xbox 1, and PC? The 360 and PS3 are going to be gathering dust in everyone's cupboard soon so why bother with that platform? Me no understand..

bungie may know how to make games, but they're sure poor about it. a x1/PS4 win/linux would've made more sense from the get go. I can understand a later release on PC till the steamOS/box ain't out (to avoid folk picking win over the PS4). other than that no.

Lies, Not making it on PC because they will lose focus on other platforms which will, in turn, degrade the game doesn't make any sense if some of the platforms on which the game is being released are obsolete. To me, old tech will hold the game back way more especially since the PS3 is a bitch for multi-console releases.

Specially since Xbox 3, ( I refuse to use that stupid moniker they came up with) and PS4 are effectively pc hardware with a custom OS. Yet that seems to be the new release model, just look at the latest GTA releases.

I wish they had focused on next gen and p.c. instead of current gen honestly. I know people who aren't getting into next gen yet will disagree with that though. It's just that more often than not when a developer creates a game for two distinct console generations both versions end up being less than they could have been had the focus been on one or the other. Even when they are approached as separate games it is still splitting their budget and teams up which means neither version gets their full attention. Oh well, I'm still very excited to try out Destiny and remain hopeful that it will be phenomenal.

Bungie isn't going to release the game for PC at launch (if at all) because, like other developers, they want to sell as many console versions as they can before they do. I think most developers asume that releasing the PC version of their games at the same time as their console version makes it more likely that people will download cracked PC versions instead of actually buying their game. It has nothing to do with technical issues and everything to do with maximizing sales.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's already been like that (and worse) on the current generation. If you want all the maps in Battlefield or CoD then you pay an additional $50 for them, making the total cost of the game $110.

just got these figures off VGChartz

week one global sales for Black Ops II:

360 = 5.9m

PS3 = 6.7m

PC = 0.4m

i'm amazed. truly. i didn't think PC would be so far behind? are these figures real? are they missing steam sales? PC gamers should be ashamed of themselves if these figures are true.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Steam sales aren't released, so it's likely closer to the console versions with that included. What you have there is 0.4m boxed copies, and nobody buys physical on PC anymore.

Bungie is a very skilled developer, just because the game is not in your gaming sistem of choice doesn't mean you guys should trash the game or the developer.

Dont believe Bungie is a good developer and they are not at advantage with the game developing only for lesser hardware. I would never play fps with controller, ever.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I love gaming on my p.c. and find fps games to be quicker and more precise on a mouse and keyboard but for the life of me can't understand why so many people think they are special because they will "never play fps with a controller." I enjoy all the amazing console exclusives and find using controllers to work just fine. I think fanboys are starting to believe their own silly hype. There is no such thing as a "master race" whether taken literally or figuratively it is simply nonsense. Anyone who considers themselves superior for only gaming on one system is really only fooling themselves and missing out on a large # of great games.

@ZombieGuyGeorge @Fabian85 @Harbinger_CR I have played with controller over at friends houses and even though you might be at a positive kill death ratio im not having fun with it. Strafing and aiming at the same time is just not possible and i dont think i can cover corners etc in the same way i am when gaming on the pc. Feels more like im running around getting lucky among other people hoping for the same. Valve controller looks alot better for fps though., Thing is i beleived all the hype for halo and halo 3 and bought both consoles and sold them to friends for 100 because i didnt enjoy it, Why would you make fps exclusive to consoles when a lot of people dont enjoy it at all. At least then include keyboard and mouse support for the game. If you have a ps4 how excited are you really for a new ps3 release ... and now you know how excited I am for console exclusives.

"people say they’re worried about models and schemes that nickel and dime people; we're not going to do that." but by having microtransaction in a game which people have already paid $60 for, it totally negate the false pro-consumer sentiments that we're feeding people prior to release.
