Bungie's Marathon Won't Need A PSN Account To Play On PC Or Xbox
Bungie's upcoming shooter Marathon won't require a PlayStation account to play on PC or Xbox.
Bungie is about to jump into its next generation of shooters with Marathon, a series it's reviving after being largely dormant for almost three decades. Little has been seen since the announcement, and while there is a planned gameplay reveal this weekend, Bungie recently confirmed that PC and Xbox players won't need a PSN account to play the extraction shooter.
Eurogamer is reporting that over on the Marathon Discord channel, a user said they were "spooked" by the idea of having to use a PSN login to play. The Marathon team replied quite clearly that players wouldn't need one.
"Marathon will not require a PlayStation Account for players on PC and Xbox."
The decision could likely have something to do with the backlash Sony faced when it reversed the requirement for Helldivers 2. Originally, it was going to be PSN free, but then retroactively set the requirement, citing "safety" for PC players. That was met with an uproar of players and was quickly overturned. In the meantime, a number of PlayStation releases have required a PSN account, even to play single-player games.
Back in January, Sony announced it was making a PSN sign-in optional for PC players on several of its games like The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, Spider-Man 2, and God of War: Ragnarok. If they did use it, they would be rewarded with fun in-game incentives along the way.
Marathon was one of Bungie's old, pre-Halo IPs that ended with Marathon Infinity in 1996. It's Bungie's first new game since the release of Destiny 2 in 2017, though Destiny has received dozens of updates and yearly expansions since then.
