Buying Red Dead Redemption 2 Is Complicated

The 2 stands for two copies.

Rockstar Games is upping the struggle when it comes to deciding between the Special and Ultimate Editions of Red Dead Redemption 2 by making some content exclusive to the physical versions of the game, and other pieces of content exclusive to the digital versions.

There are a total of three editions of Red Dead Redemption 2. The Standard Edition is a copy of the game. The Special Edition comes with a physical map of the game's world, as well as supplementary story missions, an outfit, a horse, three weapons, and a few gameplay boosts and bonuses. The Ultimate Edition includes everything from the Special Edition, but adds two more outfits, another horse, three additional weapons, and a bonus to rank up faster in online play. The Ultimate Edition also comes with a pretty fancy steel book case for an extra sparkle.

Now Playing: Red Dead Redemption 2 Special Editions And Pre-Order Bonuses Revealed - GS News Update

No Caption Provided

There's also the Collector's Box. It doesn't include the actual game like the other three. Instead, the box contains an assortment of Red Dead Redemption 2-themed collectables, such as a challenge coin, double sided puzzle, six shooter bandana, treasure map, pin set, and cards.

When it comes to the Special and Ultimate Editions, there are a few differences for players who want to buy digitally. Players who go digital miss out on the real-life map to help them keep track of their whereabouts, as well as the steel book case. Instead, the digital versions of these two editions comes with bonus cash to use in the main campaign and a digital treasure map that leads to extra funds.

Differences between physical and digital copies of the same game aren't unheard of, so Rockstar's decision to do this might not come as a surprise for some players. It is, however, a little disheartening to see. Anyone who wants everything that releases with Red Dead Redemption 2 will have to buy the Ultimate Edition of the game twice (both physically and digitally) and then also grab the Collector's Box.

Both the Special and Ultimate Editions are up for pre-order digitally on the Xbox Store and Playstation Network. The two physical versions, and Collector's Box, are available to pre-order on the Rockstar Warehouse. Red Dead Redemption 2 will be out on Xbox One and PS4 October 26.

I bought GTA V for the story, I bought Red Dead Redemption 1 for the story. Never cared for Online, never will.

The full experience of a game should be one you make yourself, not based on how much money you pay.

I pre-ordered the standard edition on play station store. Whatever I get out that is enough for me. I couldn't care less if I don't get a horse or an extra gun.

Not this difficult. Buy the regular (unlock all the stuff by playing) buy the extra DLC (if you like the game) when they dirt cheap.

Honestly, my backlog is so big right now I'll just wait. It's a single player game. Who cares if you don't play it out of the gates. Wait for the inevitable price drop or definitive edition.

@rezagtx2017: what if it doesn't release on PC? The original never did, and the sequel hasn't been announced for PC release.

@streetmagik: do you really think rockstar did not make the pc version of RDR2? one of their people said something accidentally about ps4 xbox and pc! you can google it and you really think rockstar gives up on a market like steam? i say pc version is ready and nvidia even have a game ready driver for it LOL.as for the first one the engine was problem. it was a technical port and engine was not ready at the time for changes on pc. now look at GTA V the best version of gta v is pc version. t is just marketing just like gta v story.

@rezagtx2017: whoa, cool your jets man. I'm just saying it hasn't been officially announced yet. Rockstar seems to do what Rockstar wants to do. What if it comes out a year after console release? You can assume what you want, but that's not fact. You don't know.

It seems pretty straightforward to me. It may be an unspeakably evil business strategy on behalf of Rockstar, but I've no hesitation about what needs to be done: Boycott!

No, just kidding. They deserve to be deserted for this, but that's not going to happen. So I'll just buy the Special Edition for the extra story content (which should've been included in all editions), and then ignore as much of the perks and bonuses as I can, because I'm a real cowboy who wants to EARN my crap by actually, you know, PLAYING THE GAME.

And has anyone EVER actually used the physical map???

I'll buy the GOTY Edition for half off on Black Friday next year. I'm tired of dropping $100+ to get the complete game on day one with season pass and DLC.

@chubby170: YES.

Physical maps are fkn awesome, and always have been. Sure, these aren't cloth nor parchment, and probably not framing-quality, but I'm glad some pubs are still printing them.

To put it another way, I didn't much like RDR, but if they made a cloth map I'd buy it off eBay for a decent price.

A few cartography fans still exist, and gaming brings us truly inspired map designs once or twice per year.

Pre-order bonuses are supposed to include cool free stuff at no extra charge. Not this kind of shit. Sheep taught these companies they could get away with it by always buying everything they sell. This is YOUR fault kids.

And this is why I absolutely despite Pre-Order culture. Of course Rockstar Fanboys are going to be defending this BS simply because "Its Red Dead Redemption" I swear fanboys who are very hostile in defending games that haven't come up yet NEVER learn their lesson.

There is this cloak of protection around RockstarGames and their pay to win micros because lets face it, they make 10 out of 10 rated games. So the perception from the public is ok when they alter their game with intentional little in reward grinding to favor their micros. GTA 5 is a perfect example of this. A game that has net them 6 billion dollars through sales and mostly pay to win shark cards. Not here to argue if the game is pay to win or not I know better. but....

I expect Red Dead Redemption 2 to be filled with tons of ridiculous grinding and pay to win in-game currency. I mean they got to please those shareholders right?

Looking forward to the game but only the single player mostly. I won't buy any micros for short cut high powered in game assets like in GTA 5. We will see but I feel GTA 5 success has obviously tainted the glorious Rockstargames.

In the end as long as the game is a 10 out of 10 nobody will bat an eye sadly, and the cycle will continue. Other companies have gotten away with this due to their games actually being great. It's when the games start to under perform people start to open their eyes to the problem and complain which hurts the company's public appeal. Looking at you EA.

"Buying that Collector's Box doesn’t help either"

Actually there is no game, digital or physical, in the collectors' box.
