Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare has arrived, and so have a host of review scores for this year's entry in the perennial powerhouse first-person shooter franchise.

Advanced Warfare has a few interesting storylines around it. It's the first Call of Duty game developed over the course of three years and it's the first title Sledgehammer Games has led development on, after working alongside Infinity Ward on 2011's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

The game, which is set in the near-future, also gives players a range of super-human abilities through the exosuit. On top of that, award-winning actor Kevin Spacey plays a lead role in the game.

How did Advanced Warfare come together? Check out the reviews below and GameSpot sister site Metacritic for more.

GameSpot -- 8/10

"The last time Call of Duty had 'Warfare' in its subtitle, it led to a well-received trilogy that deftly transitioned the series away from a well-trodden global conflict to modern-day combat. If the settings of today have run their course just as World War II did years ago, Advanced Warfare makes for a convincing foundation of futuristic yet relatable combat that is worth exploring and expanding further. The huge change in player mobility is less of a paradigm shift and more of an overdue retooling for an 11-year-old FPS franchise, especially in a year of mobility-focused shooters. Yet for all its predictability, Advanced Warfare is a deluge of action-film bravado, and it's difficult to not be carried away by its tidal forces." - Miguel Concepcion [Full review]

Giant Bomb -- 4/5

"Advanced Warfare doesn't reinvent Call of Duty. It's not the same dramatic shift that we saw when the series went from World War II to the modern era. Perhaps holding out hope for something as revolutionary as Modern Warfare was when it hit back in 2007 is foolish. Be that as it may, as someone who has been drifting further and further away from Call of Duty for the past few years, I can certainly say that Advanced Warfare's mobility kept me interested much longer than Ghosts or Black Ops II has. It's the best multiplayer the game has seen in some time and the whole thing totals up to a satisfying, if familiar experience." - Jeff Gerstmann [Full review]

USGamer -- 3.5/5

"Tasked with leading Call of Duty into the next generation, Sledgehammer Games is off to a cautious start. Advanced Warfare executes the formula competently while adding a handful of bells and whistles like mechs, laser cannons, and double jumps; but Sledgehammer Games seems reluctant to really cut loose and push the setting to its fullest potential, making Advanced Warfare a solid but ultimately unexciting entry in the series." - Kat Bailey [Full review]

The Sixth Axis -- 9/10

"At the heart of Advanced Warfare is the exoskeleton and all of the possibilities it opens up, transforming the way that you get around amidst the futuristic setting. Yet it delivers on many more levels too, from a compelling story and cast of characters to the graphics and the vast array of options for multiplayer character and loadout customization. Sledgehammer have shown that there's life in the long-running series yet, and thrown down the gauntlet to Treyarch and Infinity Ward." - Stefan L [Full review]

No Caption Provided

Joystiq -- 4/5

"Despite the familiarity, it's been years since a Call of Duty campaign was as coherent and fast-paced as this one. Within the confines of its franchise, which has yet to make much room for a mature look at the subject matter, Advanced Warfare works with aplomb and, at the very least, plays its Big Dumb Movie card wisely. If you're running out of bad guys, borrow some from Hollywood." - Ludwig Kietzmann [Full review]

USA Today -- 4/4

"Beyond the engaging story campaign, Advanced Warfare has an online multiplayer mode that brings the new weaponry and boost jumping in live 16-player contests. And one to four players can team up to fend off waves of computer-controlled enemies in another game mode, the fun and furious Exo-Survival co-op game. If this is what Sledgehammer Games delivers as rookies at the helm of the Call of Duty franchise, players have plenty to look forward to." - Mike Snider [Full review]

Polygon -- 9/10

"For whatever minor missteps Advanced Warfare makes with its story, it more than compensates with vision and remarkable execution. The latter has never really been Call of Duty's problem--Ghosts notwithstanding--but Advanced Warfare adds enough and moves far enough forward with its new abilities to feel like a risk. Turns out, that's just what the series needed." - Arthur Gies [Full review]

GamesRadar -- 4/5

"Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare excels in online multiplayer, with brand new mechanics and a complex, loot-filled progression system that hooks you in. But the surprises stop there. With a by-the-numbers campaign structure and unimaginative co-op mode, the competitive multiplayer mode stands as Advanced Warfare's strongest asset." - Lorenzo Veloria [Full review]

VideoGamer -- 8/10

"For a future warfare title with drones and jetpacks, Sledgehammer's success is partly to be found by looking to the series' past, and by combining its own ideas with COD's natural appeal it has reinvigorated the franchise." Steven Burns [Full review]

Ahaha, xb oners got the short end again: "the bigger battles in Advanced Warfare's opening stage do indeed operate with a cut 1360x1080 resolution on Xbox One. Clarity on geometric edges is affected - producing blurrier outlines"

The only reason this game has gotten scores above an 8 is because those bastards were paid to promote. Just because it's COD doesn't mean it deserves a 9 or 10/10 because **** you that's why.

Did you actually read the article? It says the ps4 runs at 1080p with fps dips while the xone varies in resolution but has a solid fps

It doesn't say either is better "On balance, it's an impressive showing for both platforms, with few obvious asset-side differences caught during our initial testing"

<< LINK REMOVED >> i am not surprised, and american console, with american type of video game, of course. I remember that the american army where standing in front of american campus with an xbox 360 and call of duty, trying to enroll student in their campaign. I remember that when xbox came on the market, it flooded Fps. even resident evil became almost an fps.

Since then, most of the game in 360, were Fps or gun shoot. The ps3 had not choice to please the consumer who asked more Fps (compared to the previous console generation)

I do understand that, it is in the american culture, the weapon and trying to be a soldier who will save the world. I will soon release a research, about how Fps, movies (such as 300, expendables, fast and furious etc) are correlated

pfff, instead of buying this kind of games, better for them to buy a brain first

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> so you should read mine. I said i am not surprised that call of duty run smoothly in the xbox as it is an american console. Don t get me wrong, but the japaneses do the same with the playstation, but i prefer, because at least in their video game there are stories. However, i am telling you most of people who likes call of duty, they like expendables or 300. not all of them, most of them. You know what? i have got something else for you, when the first xbox was released, many guy who were playing FPs considered themselves as hardcore gamer, and the rest of gamers as nothing, because unconsciously they thought that they were in war and they were the hero. pfff, i m 33 man, i have started playing game, where you had only 3 lives to finish the game, and never declared myself as a hardcore gamer. Only people from fps did that. Ask them, you will see.

the spawning is awful & as soon as you kill someone your killed. Hit reg is also...well "a hit or a miss"

I've only played the multi and though the game alright it has it's share of issues with balancing of weapons (the laser), the spawning and the timing that shots are registered at.

Despite the relatively better critical response to this game, it is a shame that we are now in a state of "Call of Duty Fatigue" brought on by the annual release of this game. Don't get me wrong, the game will very likely still sell very well, but there will most likely be an overall decline in total unit sales. Not to mention the fact that 3.2 million people played Destiny before the release of Advanced Warfare, and the number of hardcore players for that game will affect sales, too.

<< LINK REMOVED >> i almost agree, i wasn't a fan, preferring bf and enjoying a wide range of games, and having had all of the cods in my collection(s) (not on release sometimes), and understand the 24 hour codder 7 days a week after being one breifly on black ops, with the generic 6 monthly "upgrade", pay another 40 quid for the map packs after you buy it, even i have to say this looks good.

Technology/Engine 10/10

Revolutionary Factor 6/10 (Titanfall clone)

There a proper PC review. This game pushes the envelope in the technical department, one of the best single player experiences to date due to the solid immersion factor. Played On Ultra Settings - SMAA T2X - 1440P

I'll give them credit for trying something new with the series, but personally I'm more a fan of historic or modern shooters than I am of futuristic or scifi stuff.

The modern shooter theme is something that I like and have always liked, however because it has been done to death and many people have probably played them to death, I foresee companies shying away from them this gen. I tend to play a variety of games, so for me it will be disappointing if oversaturation of the theme means nobody will want to make them anymore. The same happened with WW2 shooters in the PS2 era, so that by the end of the generation most reviews contained a line basically saying "been there, done that".

I have come away from the COD franchise. I can understand that for people that are heavily into the multi-player, COD needs to retain what makes it feel like COD. In this respect, drastic changes to the way the game feels and plays would destroy the COD experience. In that respect, I am not the target audience and personally felt like I bought too many of the games.

For me (not counting the older games as it will take too long) it was a case of MW1 was amazing (also the only COD I got heavily into the multi-player on), WAW was pretty fun, MW2 I enjoyed because it was similar to MW1, Black Ops was a big let down as I owned the PC version and it runs like crap. MW3 I wanted to see the end of the story. Black Ops 2 I've not completed and only bought because it was on sale. It was also my last COD. If I could go back, I'd probably skip Black Ops entirely and like I said, I only bought MW3 to finish the MW story. The only games (post MW) I'd buy again on their own merit are MW1 and WAW.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Our little group of gamers who meet up 2 times a week to game in one large living room either here in my home or at another for the last 6 years . We have enjoyed MW2 and 3 more then any other. The more realistic the better. I know the fad is to make it faster, (spawn, kill, die - repeat) with little team tactics and rewards rage quitters any time the publishers can.

Many of the other COD have just sped up the formula for kids with no attention span. Rewarding those who have attained 15 kills and 0 deaths the same as someone who got 15 kills and 25 deaths. Our group may give this new game a try after reading some more reviews or just wait for DA I

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's a fast paced game that is simply fun and quick to play. It's perfect for casuals who want to jump in, do a few games, and shut it off before going to work, school, etc. It's a solid franchise and you know what you're going to get when you buy it. I'm not a fan, but I can easily say that each CoD I've owned was very fun and addicting, even if it was just filling up time. That said, I think more people are interested in the Halo 5 beta over this (me included), and that's really sad lol...

<< LINK REMOVED >> If you think that AW is "pretty much the same each year with barely any new improvements or innovation" then shouldn't the same thing apply to almost every other sequel? Look at Battlefield, Assassin's Creed, Far Cry or any racing game ever. They're all "the same" with "small improvements" if you look at it like that.

Ah yes, the "any opinion not congruent with my own is clearly bought" standby. An argument truly coined and sustained by those thoughtful, open-minded, tolerant stalwarts of the Right Proper Entertainment Defence Ministry.

Oh sorry, sarcasm's been getting a little rampant lately.

What was the point of Day Zero? I walked into a store today (not even gamestop or Best Buy) and bought a regular copy of the game, not the Day Zero edition. Don't understand what the whole point of saying the game comes out on Nov 4th but special people get in on the 3rd (or even 2nd). Kinda defeated the purpose for those who really thought they were getting some sort of special privelage.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Exactly! Ashley Jenkins on The Patch (podcast) brought this up! Why can't anyone just go in and "pre order" the game and pick it up that day? It makes no sense at all! I could just go in and pre order it the day before and walk out with the game. Dumbest idea once you start thinking about it. I could see if it only came in some huge season pass combo thing, but wasn't it just a normal edition? I guess 90% of their audience wouldn't figure that out though.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Do you really believe developers pay all these different reviewers to give them a good score? What a waste of money. If they paid them to give them a good score, why would they have the review-lock until the game officially released? If they knew they paid people to give them great reviews, they would want those reviews out ASAP.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> While I think conspiracy theories in the gaming community are really overboard, it's not unheard of. A guy got fired from GS after giving Kane and Lynch 2 a 6.5(?). It definitely happens, and to think that the most successful franchise in the world is pitching something out to sway some scores is justifiable. That being said, not every single review is fake, and you can usually go by user reviews (ignoring the 10's and 0's..). Most likely this game deserves an 8. Just because the franchise is milked to oblivion and they've lost roughly a quarter of their fanbase in just three years, doesn't make this single game bad.

But to be honest, CoD is way passed it's peak. It's falling fast and there's not much that can pull it back up. Making Zombies DLC may give them some money, but is a horrible decision. People are just getting fed up with CoD, and at this point. It's essentially becoming this ongoing phenomenon that is just becoming a parody of itself while most of the gaming community sits back and laughs. It's getting old, and people are simply sick of it. There's nothing they can do either. Change too much, fans will leave. Change too little, and fans will retaliate. They've built themselves a very long dead end road, and they're starting to reach the end.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> One thing to think about is integrity. If any of this sites took money, you know that the public would find out and that site would lose all credibility and would lose readers. This would cause a lost of money way more than any company could pay them to take a bribe. That is why I laugh when someone talks about reviewers being paid off. All ratings are just someone's opinion. You don't have to like it.
