Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Devs Want to Start New Sub-Series
It's a good bet we'll see Infinite Warfare 2 in three years.
Ever since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the Call of Duty series has primarily consisted of two different sub-series. The Modern Warfare games made up Infinity Ward's franchise, while Treyarch developed the Black Ops series. Now that both of those series have ended, developers at Infinity Ward say that they want the upcoming Infinite Warfare to begin an entirely new sub-franchise in the Call of Duty series.
In an interview with Polygon, narrative director Taylor Kurosaki, who came to Infinity Ward from Last of Us developer Naughty Dog back in 2014, stated that he had no investment in Infinity Ward's last game, Call of Duty: Ghosts. As a result, he wanted to make his own mark on the Call of Duty series and go in a very different direction.
He stated, "We want to establish our own new sub-franchise, our own new branch of the Call of Duty tree. What we are developing here could certainly support multiple games. We're trying to develop a very rich world that we're not even close to exhausting."
Kurosaki also shared that he views Infinite Warfare as a huge shift, equivalent to the jump between Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. "I'm sure that the Infinity Ward team felt the same kind of tremendous burden when they went from World War II to modern warfare," he explained. "It's an entire world with new weapons, vehicles, AI, under-the-hood stuff. We're doing the exact same stuff here. This is as much of a sea change."
There's a lot more from Kurosaki and writer Brian Bloom (who also came from Naughty Dog) in the Polygon interview.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 4. Infinity Ward recently revealed the game's crazy new Zombies mode, called Zombies in Spaceland. The developer also announced that the mode stars several celebrities such as David Hasselhoff.
