Call Of Duty: WW2 Doubles Infinite Warfare's Launch Sales

Call of Duty: WWII is selling well.

Call of Duty: WWII launched last week to a positive critical reception, and now we know the shooter has succeeded commercially, too. During its opening weekend, the game sold twice as many copies as Infinite Warfare did during the same period last year, Activision has announced. The three days following launch saw the new Call of Duty make over $500 million, and its PS4 version is the "best-selling digital full game … on its first day of availability" ever on the PlayStation Store.

"Our $500 million opening weekend was not only bigger than Thor: Ragnarok's, it was bigger than the opening weekends of both Thor and Wonder Woman combined," said Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg. "And we're committed to supporting the community with continuous improvements and new content."

Now Playing: GS News Update: Call Of Duty: WW2 Doubles Infinite Warfare's Launch Sales

Earlier this week, it was reported that Call of Duty: WWII's launch sales were "significantly higher than infinite Warfare" after the 2016 game's relatively poor sales. However, Call of Duty: WWII's launch has not been without its problems. The game has suffered from server issues, prompting developer Sledgehammer to close its leaderboards and make a number of other temporary changes. Despite this, the shooter has garnered a positive reception since launch, and GameSpot's Call of Duty: WWII review awarded the game a 9/10. Critic Miguel Concepcion wrote: "As one of the most comprehensive and filler-free Call of Dutys in recent memory, Call of Duty: WWII successfully capitalizes on the series' strengths."

This makes me so happy. I love when gaming industry compares itself to movies and kicks ass. Hollywood is on downward spiral year after year. There are maybe 3-4 movies in a year worth seeing. Everything successful belongs to superhero franchises but what about people who had enough of superheroes? They have basically nothing to look forward to. Where are 20-30mil budget films? They almost don't exist anymore. Let's put aside opinion that games are better than movies if not for anything then just for the fact that you are basically in them and you create parts of story as you go. Wolfenstein 2(preferably Fergus timeline) . Make me a movie just from the cutscenes (i know it's already on youtube) and there it is, my movie of the year. Nothing from Hollywood comes close this year in my book.

@blood-souls: I hardly watch movies anymore, videogames have taken over and why not, it's so much more fun!

Great sales but the future of the series is not great, if they keep making world war 2 games gamers will get tired of it and sales will drop, if they go into future wars gamers will get turned off and sales will drop, i am very interested to see their next move.

@hardcoregamer1: I dont think so. New generations of gamers will not have had the chance to play the past games, so it remains fresh to them. Besides, how many era's can you have a war game based on?

All I know is this is a breath of fresh air vs. that futuristic garbage that was being pumped out the past couple years. Those were the worst...

Nice. While I personally prefer the modern/futuristic settings in the Call of Duty games this one does look great and I am looking forward to playing it. Pretty impressive sales for the game.

I've been asking them for WWII for the last few years and boy did they deliver. Just like the old days of CoD II and III... fantastic. Now if they can go back and do a full modern remastering of the origin CoD games in one massive bundle that would be epic.

@khanwashere: it’s nothing like cod2 which was my favorite cod. The maps are shitty and small and badly designed.

@restatbonfire: I disagree, I like the maps. And I am someone who complains alot about COD maps. They could use more choke points and change how people can come from behind but they are pretty good... Best was MW2 and BLOPSII

Those figures are just insane. Only a few titles can garner results in the same line as COD.

Looks like the gamble to "go back to their roots" payed off in more ways than one. Not surprising really. I think many fans of the franchise were a little off put by some of the previous entries in the series and something like going back to a pivotal time not only in the franchise's history but in history in general is always a smart if not a purposely calculated move.
