C&C3 demo waging war on XBL

Sample of EA's latest real-time strategy for the Xbox 360 now on Marketplace; 1GB file hindered by slow downloads.

Last week, Electronic Arts revealed what many gamers were anticipating--a demo of the Xbox 360 edition of Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars was in the works. Today, the publisher pulled the curtain back on the demo and released it to the public over Xbox Live Marketplace.

The file weighs in at 1GB, which apparently has clogged some Internet pipes and made downloading fairly sluggish. On his blog, Xbox Live Director of Programming Larry Hryb, better known in the gaming community as Major Nelson, confirms that some users have experienced slow download times. However, since the demo went up, Microsoft has been at work alleviating the problem, and Hryb suggests that those users who are encountering slow transfer speeds restart the download.

Though EA hasn't come forward to explain what is in the demo, message board users have. The file allegedly features a pair of single-player missions, a tutorial, and Xbox Live multiplayer support.

The Xbox 360 version of Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars is scheduled for release on May 10, is rated T for Teen, and will retail for $59.99. For more information, read GameSpot's previous coverage.

This game is incredibly fun and I think i might actually prefer the control scheme on the xbox over the pc. It seems like the control scheme helps even the playing field so the APM crazed diehard RTS players cant dominate you too easily. Just like Kujel said though, there DEFINITELY needs to be a way to select all of the units of a single type on the screen, and double tapping A is the way to go.

Took me about 15 min. The game is easy to control on the xbox and the graphics are identical to my high end pc. Only thing I have a slight problem with is hotkeying units (A bit slower but nothing worth complaining too much about). This is a must buy for the 360.

Did anyone notice if you hold the left bumper you can set way points for your selected units? Also I saw a bunch of poits claiming C&C3 looked better on PC but I disagree, I didn't see any difference from the PC demo and the 360 demo. I actally prefer the larger screen anyway. As for the controls they were superb but as some people said it would be nice to double tap A and select all units of one type as well as a drag selection box but other then that it was awsome.

ok to all people with slow downloads, shut down all other internet traffic with ur pc if you're connected via a shared connection on the pc. the graphics well if you play it on a 19 inch flatscreen the textures are more compact and will likely be more sharp. when you play on a hd tv it looks pretty cool but you cant have the pc graphics cuz of the larger screens. do you guys know that xbox will refund your scratched games now, they publicly admitted that the xbox does cause scratches on ur discs over time. i already got my money back from a game i bought last year.

well my record on PC online is 95Wins 17 Loss, and I beat the entire campaign on Hard, GDI, NOD and the 4 scrin missions... I bought the KANE Edition (which isn't really worth it since the maps don't transfer) I am gonna download the 360 demo and try it out for myself, I love RTS games especially C&C 3 so I'll see how it goes, heh if it goes good I'll play both. :)

I have played C&C3 on the computer and 360 as well. The PC controls are obviously easier to use but the 360 setup works suprisingly well. The PC graphics seemed slightly sharper. The multiplayer on 360 was loads of fun but I wish it would support more than 4 players per match. The different multiplayer modes seem like they will offer an entertaining variety to the standard match setup of start building-from-nothing-and-kill-everyone-else. The camera feature is a cool feature, although I found myself not looking at it much because I was frantically building mammoth tanks for a rush. I can't imagine the shenanigans that will occur with that camera feature, but it should equte to a lot of laughs. I'm looking forward to C&C3 on 360.

PC version is better if you have a pretty powerful pc, just because of the controls, but the 360 version is great too. Tried them both just because I was curious about the controls on the 360. PC version just loads a bit quicker and has better graphics if your system can push it. More people using voice support on the 360, I think maybe most PC people sound too dork to want to use their mic. (mics cost like 2 dollars, price definately isn't the issue) I guess at least they can type messages. The PC players seem better than the 360 players tho, I wish you could play this game cross platform, that would have been nice. Wouldn't have to wonder which players were better then. I know I win 9/10 times on the demo for the 360 in multiplayer, and about 5/10 times on the PC.

Slow? I downloaded it friday night... I left my 360 there so it could download... the next time I checked the download, it was complete! Either time passed faster than I thought or download was that fast. So it took like... maybe an hour or less to complete. I dunno why it's slow now. Too bad.

I downloaded it on the weekend and it plays great with the controller. I have played RTS games on PC with mouse and keyboard setup and frankly it's just as easy with the XB360 controller the way they designed the controls. I think we may have a few PC fanboys leaving comments in here without really trying the game on 360!!

Suprised by the controls, very nice game. A good Back'n'day'z feeling without a PC. I'm glad, thank you EA for making this 360-bound.

Like the guy below says, have fun with the controller. I downloaded it because I have always loved C&C. But I have always played them on PC. I figured I would give it a shot. Negative. The controller just doesnt cut it. I will get this on PC for sure. Took me about an hour to download. No big deal for me...

@Ra-Devil you are mistaken about no RTSs on xbox, there was Goblin Commander and Aliens Vs Preditor: extinction (AvP was also on PS2), oh yeah there was Battalion Wars on Game Cube but it wasn't exactly an RTS, still pretty close. The PC fans have been trying to say because controls have been shaky in the past console RTSs suck but I've enjoyed a few but I must admit BFME II was the best I've tried to date. I'm still waitng to try this on 360, only a few more days until sliver members can DL it.

C&C was on the Sega Saturn and the Playstation, it was better on the Saturn. C&C Red Alert, and Red Alert Retalliation were on the Playstation. C&C was also on the 64, as was Star Craft. War Craft I & II was on the Saturn and the Playstation. There was a special download for the Sega Dreamcast that let you play C&C Tiberium Sun. In other words, RTS have always been on consoles. This whole thing isn't new at all. It was simply that LOTR BFME II was the first good Next Gen one. There was nothing on the PS2 or Xbox or GameCube, so that was a pretty big leap, now C&C is returning to consoles. This makes me happy, because now to play it, all I have to do is spend $60, and not a few Hundred to upgrade my PC, which is good enough to play Doom, but I'm pretty sure can't handle everything on screen in C&C and run smooth.

Played the demo, the control scheme is impressive for a console based RTS. Had no problems completing the missions, controlling units. I think people who are used to keyboard and mouse are initially hindered by this fact, because you're frustrated by trying to figure out how to do the things you're used to doing in PC RTS games. One thing I haven't figured out yet (if it's possible) is how to quickly select all units of a specific type. I know that left trigger selects all units on screen, and that left button selects individual units, but to be able to quickly select rocket infantry which are amongst all kinds of units would be great. Making a group is somewhat of a solution, but you have to do this beforehand. In most modern PC RTS games, you can just double click on the rocket infantry and there you go.

If PC fans don't want to play this version go somewhere else, the rest of us are happy with it and other RTSs on console. BTW turn-based strategies have always worked well on consoles, one of my favorets of all time (on any system) is Dai Senryaku VII for xbox 1. It was awsome, maybe not the prettiest but it has some of the deepest strategy of any game to date and the AI is really good too.

For the punchline in my previous post - So please, please, update your prescription for your glasses, get surgery on that fat above your eyelids, and pay attention in math class. It seriously isn't that difficult to figure out. Its just a matter of FACT, NOT opinion. JUST LOOK (and think a bit).

I don't see why almost everyone is so blind to see why for shooters and rts a mouse is more precise. Even a NON-GAMER could tell. All they need is a pair of eyes and a brain. LOOK at the game pad, the thumbstick IS STUCK inside a SOCKET. You can only MOVE INSIDE that SOCKET. This means you only have so much room to make your moves. Therefore you have a VERY SMALL MARGIN OF ERROR. Then look at your mouse sitting on your table. A LOT of room to move that mouse around. Its not stuck in a socket and you can have AS BIG OF A SPACE as you want to MOVE around. This gives you a VERY LARGE MARGIN of error to work in. Thus you can be MUCH more accurate.

further to my previous post, i cannot believe i forgot halo wars in my list of anticipated games! and with regards the arguments over the downloading of the above and gold/silver xbl membership, as i understand it ALL demo's are for gold only members for the first few days (up to about a week). i check for new demos every day (i love the ability to download and play a demo btw - its stopped my from buying some turkeys and opened my eyes to some great games e.g. fear) and it always seems i cannot download new demos for about a week (ish) i dont think its a big deal, just a little perk for gold members is all

wow i cant wait to play this. im not a gold member so have to wait.... i hope more RTS games keep coming out, i have bought all of them fr 360 so far. lord of the rings bfme 2, battlestations midway, star trek generations, they are all good in their own ways. the pc has an advantage in the control scheme and cpu power, but not everyone has the time and money to keep their pc up to date enough to play the newest games. so i hope publishers realise there is an audience for console strategy games and keeps them coming (cant wait for this, and overlord too)

lithus, "Now some of the worlds best FPS's are on the Consoles and NOT the PC's." while I agree that shooters on consoles have gotten better, the shooters on PC are still much, much, better, my PC is decent and I know that, although I'm not the type who plays enough to compete enough as I would like to on a PC shooter online, so I stick to console shooters. They both have good points but PC still has the crown, and they will probably ALWAYS be better to play on PC, but that still doesn't mean that PC will always have the best shooters, I think more and more people are moving away from PC gaming and only the super hardcore are remaining, that's just based on what I see from friends who are into PC shooters. Although I think a big chunch of the PC shooter crowd are European, the foreign exchange student at my school says like 90% or so of the people in his country who play videogames play only on PC, so I think there will be a market for PC games for a long long time. PC will always be good for Shooters & RTS and consoles will always be good for Fighters & Sports games and that kind of stuff, there isn't one that's better over the other overall, pick which one you like best, and be happy with it.

Thanks, Yammazul, you just proved that there are complete game geeks out there who actually argue the relevance between First perspective and third perspective when it comes to controls. Dude, they both have a bloody cross hair and they both use the same control schemes. Both suffer the same lack of finesse with a gamepad compared to a mouse. Enjoy that 400 GBP computer, if you actually think that gets you a good system now a days then you are certainly no genius. But this wasnt an debate about cost, simply which controller was better for FPS (or TPS dumbass) and RTS.
