Capcom praises DmC and Dragon's Dogma in FY13 earnings

Capcom announces a ¥2.97 billion profit for FY13, and will more strongly invest in "directing our development resources to the development of online games" in the future.

Capcom has announced an expected profit of ¥2.97 billion (approximately $30m/£19.3m) for the 2013 financial year, following its revised April forecast.

No Caption Provided

As predicted, Resident Evil 6 "did not meet with [Capcom's 7 million sales target] and thus was not able to play a role in leading the segment's sales growth." The game has sold 4.9 million copies.

UK developer Ninja Theory's take on DmC: Devil May Cry "enjoyed stable popularity in overseas markets and posted solid sales," with the game's last sales tally coming in at 1.15 million copies sold.

The popularity of Dragon's Dogma was "greater-than-expected," however, and saw an "unprecedented" million copies sold for an original title.

Despite making a profit, Capcom was down 56 percent year-on-year in net income. The publisher previously blamed its current outlook on "excessive outsourcing" and "a delayed response to the expanding digital contents market," two problems it aims to rectify by funneling ¥7.2 billion (£48 million/$73 million) into a company-wide restructuring.

Looking ahead, Capcom expects to make a good amount of money in "directing our development resources to the development of online games (mobile, PC online and downloads for consumer games), which is a growing area, and by releasing large-scale titles such as 'Monster Hunter 4' and 'Lost Planet 3' focused on the domestic and overseas markets respectively."

For the next financial year, Capcom expects to make ¥6.8 billion ($68m/£44m) in net income.

@DeadPhoenix86 Cough, wtf? I almost choked upon reading this. You must be new to this type of game to say this was a "fresh" new title. This game is a complete abomination compared to DMC that came before it. How could this game actually be worse that DMC 2, lets make the game so simple an idiot could complete it and feel accomplished after doing so. Hand holding throughout the entire game, combos that create themselves, awards for button mashing since you rarely have to use any sort of skill; a couple of enemies require you to think. It was created to appeal to the casual gamer and even that failed. Happy you liked it but many others did not and I am a seasoned DMC player, this game was poor on all fronts and only excelled in visual fidelity and story telling. DMC 4 was better than this even if it made little sense in the story line, it was fun to unlock Dante and then go on merciless combo sprees, the weapon swapping which fed into combo chains was impressive, DMC 3 is the height of DMC awesomeness and then the genius behind it left and created the mother of all Bayonetta, play that instead of this reboot, it's how it should be done minus the space harrier crap and the motorcycle stage.

@Kyrylo @DeadPhoenix86 Ugh, haters haters. Capcom doesn't really give a damn **** about you. By the standard nowadays DmC will continue. Many people love it. I love it. The game itself was extraordinary and takes on an fresh and original look on the series.

@wexorian Seriously?!! the people who 'liked' this and other similar posts were the same people who's been bashing DmC all throughout the comments section. Nice tandem guys..

I thought when they were blaming their woes on excessive outsourcing in the article last month that they were referring to Ninja Theory's handling of "DMC" (Which is a fantastic game BTW) Now they are praising them. RE6 sells 4.9 and that's not good enough for Capcom, but DMC sells just over a million and they're the favorite son. Is it any wonder that the gaming industry is going tits up when this is how they process their sales numbers.

@toecutter00 You failed to consider 2 logical key factors:

1) The development costs for DMC and RE6 were probably vastly different.

2) Because RE6 is "RE6", it automatically had much, much higher expectations than a risky reboot of a previously discontinued series.

@toecutter00 You sure you're not thinking of Square Enix, who blamed all problems on the western developers?

Less multi player online focused games, more single player games that can be played offline would be a lot better. It is very annoying when playing an online focused game and the servers or the net go down and you lose all your progress.

Looks like old school DmC fans may still have their way and get the old DMC universe back. DMC 4 sold 2 million in its first month alone on i's way to about 3 million sold. The new franchise will be lucky to make 2 million in lifetime sales.

@Slim_Lyrics If there is then there is. I always wanted a sequel to DMC 4. Kinda bothered why they did not continue and rebooted the whole thing. Anyway, since this remake wasn't that much of a disappointment (at least for me) I'll just be happy and content to whatever they throw at us.. in the DMC universe anyway.

@Kyrylo @bannermanner @kevinarraptorrr @Slim_Lyrics Opinions aren't faulty, they're just, well, opinions. I didn't hate Devil May Cry 4, but I was underwhelmed by it. I thought Nero was a bland, forgettable hero, the story was nonsensical, and the Devil Bringer was underused. I actually thought DmC tweaked it to have more interesting combat applications.

I don't think DmC is the best or even the second best of them, but objectively, there's just no way it's the worst.

@bannermanner @Kyrylo @kevinarraptorrr @Slim_Lyrics sorry. opinion about being "strangnant is very faulty, since it's added new character. new moves and new mechanics. it also added on fly style switching. As for new one. It removed everything I liked about dmc.

@Kyrylo @kevinarraptorrr @Slim_Lyrics I kind of sort of understand the reticence; it does look and feel very different. But at the same time, I'm not the kind of gamer who is satisfied by the same thing time and again.

I've been a Devil May Cry fan since the beginning, and honestly, 2 is the true insult, the real slap in the face. 1 and 3 were awesome games, but I thought 4 was bland and repetitive. Stagnant. Reliant on Japanese tropes to a fault. I'm cool with whatever at this point.

@Kyrylo @Slim_Lyrics I agree. Very very unlikely. Guess we'll just have to see how the new series will go. I still want the original Dante on the next M Vs. C though..

@Slim_Lyrics No they won't. Capcom seems happy with the reboot's level of success, comparatively slim though it may be. At this point, you're more likely to get one of two options. We'll either get a sequel to DmC or the franchise will be axed completely.

@Slim_Lyrics It's hard to say if there will ever be another DMC game. Not due to the direction of the latest, but because of the rapid deflation of the game industry in general. Large development teams are not nimble enough for todays gamer.
