Captain America: Civil War Pushes Marvel Universe Past $10 billion at Global Box Office

The massive success of Captain America: Civil War has now pushed the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe past the $10 billion mark worldwide.

The movie continues to dominate the box office both at home and internationally. Worldwide, it has now grossed $940.8 million, which means that collectively the 13 movies that comprise the MCU have made $10.02 billion worldwide.

Civil War currently stands fourth in the list of Marvel's top earners, behind the two Avengers movies and Iron Man 3. It is already way ahead of its nearest rival, 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, which made $773.3 million by the end of its run.

The third Captain America film has also already earned more than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, from superhero rivals DC, which has made $868.8 million to date. This is especially impressive given Dawn of Justice was released six weeks ahead of the Marvel film.

Civil War earned $72.6 million in the US this weekend, the eighth-largest second weekend of all time. It dropped 59% from its first three days, a drop that puts it inline with last year's Avengers: Age of Ultron. The domestic total now stands at $295.9 million.

Speaking to Fortune, media analyst Paul Dergarabedian explained that the film had hit all the marks that make for a box office winner. "Civil War continues to benefit from good old-fashioned word-of-mouth, an irresistible concept and its delivery of a flat-out perfect summer popcorn movie experience," he said.

While Marvel has traditionally released films in the summer, fans will have to wait until the fall for the next dose of superhero action. Doctor Strange opens on November 4, only the second Marvel film to hit cinemas late in the year.
