The epic clash of Iron Man and Captain America delivers laughter, drama, and excitement.

Captain America: Civil War is the latest installment in the Cap franchise, and another puzzle piece in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. We've seen a lot of #TeamCap versus #TeamIronMan on social media, with a massive "choose your side" theme in the lead-up to the film's release.

So who's right in Civil War? Well...everyone.

Now Playing: Captain America: Civil War Spoiler-Free Review

In Civil War, our heroes are forced to stand and be held accountable for the death and destruction they've caused after the events of the first two Avengers movies. A coalition of 117 nations have banded together to create the Sokovia Accords, which would effectively retire the Avengers unless specifically called upon. Captain America (Chris Evans) worries putting their powers into the hands of people/countries with political agendas would be disastrous, while Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) gets a close-up look at the terrible cost of these battles and decides to sign.

The disagreements in Civil War build up like a Katamari (sadly, the King of All Cosmos is not an Avenger...yet), starting as a basic verbal disagreement and culminating in full-out war between Cap and Iron Man, with a slew of Avengers on each side fighting for what they believe in.

If you’re worried about Civil War serving as a sort of Avengers 3 instead of a Captain America movie, you'll be pleasantly surprised to discover that's not the case at all. While we get a lot of Avengers action, this is absolutely, at its core, a story about Steve Rogers and his friendships with Tony Stark and Bucky Barnes.

No Caption Provided

Bucky is the catalyst for a lot of the movie's more personal beats, with the plot revolving around his transformation into The Winter Soldier...and one mission in particular. Cap really believes Bucky can be saved, but after a global act of terrorism places Bucky square in the crosshairs of Team Iron Man, Black Panther, and the rest of the world, Team Cap chooses to protect Bucky, making them fugitives in the process.

I won't say more about the plot, because I don’t want to spoil it for you, but every hero acts in their own self-interest, choosing which side they're on based on their personality and individual reasoning. Nobody makes dumb choices to push forward the plot in Civil War, and the film is better for it. Emotional beats play true to both the fictional characters in the film, but they also play true to us as an audience. It's also a terribly funny film; there were more than a handful of times the laughter of the premiere audience drowned out the next few lines. If you thought the airport fight looked amazing in the trailers…well, let’s just say you’re in for a huge surprise when you see how it plays out on the big screen.

The introductions of Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman playing King T’Challa of Wakanda) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland in his first outing as a teenage Peter Parker) played to huge cheers and applause in the theater. After seeing Boseman and Holland play their respective characters, you’ll be frantically looking up when Black Panther and Spider-Man: Homecoming hit theaters (we'll save you the trouble: Spider-Man: Homecoming will arrive on July 7, 2017, and Black Panther bows on February 15, 2018). Boseman is regal, yet relatable. Kind, yet terrifying. As for Holland, I’ve never seen a better Spider-Man portrayed on the big screen. Sorry Tobey and Andrew, this kid’s got it.

Marvel has spent the last six years laying the foundation for Captain America: Civil War, and it pays off huge here. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and the other characters we know and love have spent a lot of time honing their characters into finely tuned machines, both literally and emotionally; indeed, without seeing that history play out on the big screen in previous films, their big showdown in Civil War would feel hollow and contrived. To see Tony and Cap's friendship fall apart is heartbreaking, because you buy it. You buy Tony's weariness. You buy Cap's unwavering loyalty to his friend Bucky, even in the face of international consequences.

It's like I said earlier. Tony and Cap are both on the right side in Civil War. And you'll agree with both of them because of how damn likable they all are.

Civil War? More like Charisma War!

I'm sorry, you did say you read the comics, right? How is Cap not convincing? He fights for freedom! It's always been at his core, and especially in this movie! Bucky adds drama and an immediate plot vehicle, but underlying that is the thematic difference between Tony and Cap.

very good movie, too many people dig deep into these movies. It's just a fun action packed movie, and if you dont take it as that you are greatly depriving yourself from the fun.

I do think they cheaped out on the moral and ethical dilemma a bit. The thing I liked about the comic Civil War was that there was no clear right or wrong. They took sides based on what they believed in, and the ensuing conflict resulted in people they cared about being hurt or even killed. It was a rare insight into superheroes dealing with the devastating consequences of their choices.

Here, the premise seems a bit more like a forced setup instead of a natural progression. In the comics, Cap's decision was a surprise, but made a lot of sense in context.

It just seems that Disney/Marvel was just slightly too afraid of keeping it real?

Other than that, it was still a very entertaining movie.

I already saw it (I'm european) and it's just another quip fest, this time in the form of Quip War. Another addition to the MCU where nothing ever happens and even when the heroes fight each other, it's all just a merry ride in quiptown. The entire MCU got so boring after The Winter Soldier, and Disney/Marvel just don't have the stones to make a meaningful movie with actual consequences.

I'm just gonna wait for the standalone Spider-Man movie to come out.

Exactly why Batman vs Superman didnt work.

We have spent years getting to know these characters and them creating bonds with each other. We understand their existence within their world. Their relationships make sense.

Imagine if this was the first movie with these characters.

Of course, it doesnt help that B v S had much weaker writing and directing....

but i digress....

Looking forward to seeing how this story arc, plays out.

PS. Lucy is the coolest.

@BigPrimeNumbers:
Just in case you actually do want to know where to start and what to skip, here's a quick list of the order of the most essential Marvel movies that tie into their main universe, and what are optional even though they tie in.

- Iron man
- Captain America: the First Avenger
- Thor
- Avengers
- Iron man 2 (optional)
- Iron man 3 (optional)
- Guardians of the Galaxy (same universe with some shared villains. Not directly tied in at the moment, so optional I guess)
- Thor 2 (semi optional. Some of the things that happen in this film will probably tie in to others later)
- Captain America: Winter Soldier
- Avengers: Age of Ultron
- Ant man (optional, although you get to know the character)
- Captain America: Civil war

@BigPrimeNumbers: You can also just check the Marvel cinematic universe wikipedia page for the whole list in right order, there are some subtle things in each movie that tie or most likely will tie into each other so really if you just have the time then watch all of them, I don't think any of them are bad, some are definitely better than others but I haven't regretted watching any of them

@chris_shady Ben was absolutely incredible as Batman. Even among the negative reviews it seems a lot of people agreed he did a fantastic job. Soooo, no he did not lose BIG TIME. Oh and by the way Batman doesn't have an "l" at the end of it and "Affleck" has two f's.

@skittymiao: All the things you just said, have nothing to do with Afflecks performance as Batman. The reason for his lethal tactics is also hinted on in the dialogue between Bruce and Alfred, pay attention the next time you watch it.

I'm sure the movie is fine and entertaining, just like the rest of the Marvel movies. I just can't be bothered to care. There's no "end goal" with this universe. It only exists to keep itself going, and I know that if a major character dies in this movie, they'll just come back in a few more installments. It feels like, no matter how grand the stakes, none of it matters because we know there will be more.

I like stories with endings. Ending a story when the reader wants more after its natural conclusion is a sign of good storytelling. This is something else entirely.

@turtlethetaffer: The only gripe i have is that terrance howard didn't make it in the rest of the films... He had Jim Rhodes nailed. Don Cheadle is good as war machine, but terrance howard just nailed the Tony Stark/JimRhodes relationship, Don Cheadles War Machine always seemed to be Tony's baby sitter or somewhat of sense of conscience, instead of how the comics portrayed him and the way he was initially set up in the first Ironman film, which was loyal to Tony no matter what he did, he always knew his place and he always followed Tony's lead. Don Cheadles role always has this air of superiority, i hate that.

@Janpieterzun: I don't like when stories don't have an end. The best stories are the ones that complete a story arc and you'd love to have more, but at the same time you know it ended in the right place. When things go on too long they get redundant or ridiculous. Just look at Supernatural.

After finishing up Daredevil S2 last night, having followed Supergirl, Flash and Legends of Tomorrow this year, and endured the mistakes made by BvS, I must say that DC has a lot of catch up to do with Marvel's multimedia takeover.

I've got no allegiance or loyalty to either Marvel or DC, just find it remarkable how lopsided the quality / quantity gap is between them onscreen.

Hell yes, pumped for Civil War.
