Captain Marvel Trailer Showcases Brie Larson's New Powers And Cosmic Action

"You're not from 'round here."

This week brought with it the very first trailer for Captain Marvel, and it's a good one. Brie Larson stars in the upcoming Marvel movie, which is set for release in March 2019, just prior to the still-untitled Avengers 4. She is the first female superhero to headline a film within the MCU and is joined by Jude Law, Samuel L. Jackson, and Ben Mendelsohn.

The trailer opens with Captain Marvel--aka Carol Danvers--falling to Earth, straight into a Blockbuster rental store, which is keeping with the movie's '90s setting. We see flashes of her intergalactic life as part of Starforce, and then how she comes to terms with a new life on Earth--which includes punching an old lady. The trailer doesn't really give much away in terms of plot, but we do see some of her powers and the main characters, including Mar-Vell (Law) and a younger, eyepatch-free Nick Fury (Jackson). Check it out above.

Now Playing: Captain Marvel - Official Trailer

This trailer follows the first batch of images that were released earlier this month. Captain Marvel is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, and the cast also includes DeWanda Wise (She's Gotta Have It), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them), Lee Pace (Halt and Catch Fire), and Clark Gregg, who is making his return to the MCU as SHIELD Agent Phil Coulson.

Earlier this month, Larson told Entertainment Weekly what we can expect from her character. "She can't help but be herself," she said. "She can be aggressive, and she can have a temper, and she can be a little invasive and in your face. She's also quick to jump to things, which makes her amazing in battle because she's the first one out there and doesn't always wait for orders. But the [not] waiting for orders is, to some, a character flaw."

Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 6, 2019. For more, check out our guide to the movie's cast and everything we know about the movie so far.

"The first trailer for Captain Marvel has finally arrived, and it's a good one."

Not really. Nothing special about this trailer. Brie Larson has one look on her face the whole time, Jude Law does a better job of showing off emotion and you only see him for 2 seconds. Falling into a Blockbuster, derp it's the 90s! Usually Marvel delivers quality trailers, but this one is a miss for me.

Ending credits scene: A young brunette removes a glove and touches Captain Marvel on her exposed skin, absorbing her powers and putting her in a coma... X-men cartoon theme song plays. End scene.

Am I the only one wondering who the $%^& cares about Captain Marvel? They just had an epic battle to the finish with multiple franchises and the next film will be some tacky superhero most of the non full nerd world has never even heard of's origin story...I hope I'm wrong but it seems like a real drop in momentum.

@zerohournow: Let's be real here. No one outside of the nerd world knew who the Guardians of the Galaxy were before their movie. Even Black Panther and Doctor Strange were relatively unknown. Iron Man's movies are what blew him into mainstream popularity.

Before the Marvel Movies, Spider Man, Hulk and Captain America were like the only well known heroes Marvel had going for it.

Bank on this: Captain Marvel will become as much a household hero name as Ant Man or Thor after this movie, and the next Avengers, is done. Kids will wear Captain America backpacks, she will appear in more video games, etc etc etc.

It's kind of funny- in the effort to shoehorn her into Avengers 4: Electric Macklemore, they threw together this movie, which rewrites everything and in the process skips the most interesting, important and character-developing moments of Captain Marvel's history. Gone is any of the history with the Kree Mar-Vell (who, let's face it, should've probably been the focus of the movie, but Marvel and their PC kick... anyway), gone is the history with Rogue (which, if they would've waited just a LITTLE WHILE, they could've done) that resulted in her memory loss, gone is the entire history as Binary and Warbird, pretty much the whole history before they tossed her into the Captain Marvel title so they could keep the rights without publishing a Captain Marvel one-shot every so many years.

The character was better before they gave her the costume and Captain moniker. The more recent Ms. Marvel (pre-Kamala Khan) run was great, good storytelling overall, great reading, and a character with personality. Then they made her "Captain Marvel", changed her personality, and generally oversanitized the character into a bore, which they have now further condensed and sanitized into what looks like a candidate for dullest Marvel U movie ever.

@cheeseweasel24: The same can mostly be said about every single hero in the MCU. They change their histories all the damn time. The movies still generally turn out decent and fun though.

@P00DGE: Right, but most of those are major characters with long-winded histories of 50, 60 years or so. Ol' Cappy here was a very unused character for a very long time, and again- they're taking a character they already sanitized to hell and back and kicking out the vast majority of her back story.

I'm just sayin', this one is a hard sell, and the trailer REALLY isn't doing it any favors. There wasn't a single moment in that trailer where I went "ooh" or "aah" or "ha ha ha" or anything, it was just okay... "Here's a superhero movie. Look, she shoots stuff out of her hands. We de-aged Coulson and Fury. WE SHOWED A BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO STORE. LOVE US!!!"

There just isn't anything particularly appealing about this movie, when it could have been something solid and awesome, is my point. I'm sure it won't completely suck, but after this, I would be kind'a okay waiting for the home video release, and that's kind'a sad, ain't it?

@mbrogz3000: The former Ms. Marvel, Carol Danvers was a pilot that ended up falling in love with the superhero Captain Marvel, who was a Kree named Mar-Vell (yes, really- this was decades and decades ago). Ms. Marvel had her own book in the 70's I think, didn't last too long if memory serves. Ms. Marvel ran afoul of Rogue, who wasn't yet an X-Man and was running with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Rogue touched her, draining her powers and memories, but this time it was permanent, and until the 90's, Rogue had Carol's personality in her head.

Meanwhile, Professor X was trying to help Carol regain her memories, but she ended up taking off for space with pretty much the same powers but a new look and personality named Binary. Later on- I think the 80's- she started popping up here and there with a look that would become iconic and using the name Warbird. Somewhere in the late 90's, they started using her semi-regularly and brought her back to the Ms. Marvel name.

She had her own book for a while around 2004, which was actually pretty cool. Then Marvel hit their "let's go all PC and diversify existing characters and do press conferences" kick, and they decided to change Carol completely, renaming her Captain Marvel (a name that Marvel had to keep using every few years or lose their rights to), while they created a new, completely unrelated new "Ms. Marvel" that was a Muslim teen named Kamala Khan.

Since the switch to Captain Marvel, the character has acted different in just about every way, the comics she's in are boring as hell and are just a slog to get through, and she's pretty much been a government hoser, lately stationed in the Alpha Flight satellite during the whole Secret Empire storyline, defending Earth against wave after wave of Chitauri with the help of the Alpha Flight team and the new Quasar. And before that, she was the Cap's stand-in for Civil War II, which was pretty awful, but she was the "lead" against Iron Man.

tl;dr version: She's an outer space super heroine that used to be pretty awesome and was really developing into a cool character, and then Marvel switched her out with no good reasoning other than keeping the copyright/trademark/whatever and made her bland as whole wheat bread.

Incidentally, there have been a ton of Marvel characters that have used the name. In no particular order:

The Kree Mar-Vell was the first Captain Marvel, who used the power of the mysterious Negabands to fight off cosmic threats, and was a major opponent of Thanos. He kept sort of a secret identity on Earth by striking the Negabands against each other, which would switch him with perennial Marvel character Rick Jones, as one would be on Earth, and the other would be in some other dimension, basically in limbo.

Monica Rambeau, an African American woman that was made of and could control light, was the next, I believe. She led the Avengers for a little while and was friggin' awesome. She would later change names like some people do socks, and has been known as Photon, Pulsar, Spectrum, and more I'm probably forgetting. I'm pretty sure she's current Spectrum, and has been a part of Nextwave (read that if you like superhero comedy) and the current Ultimates team.

Mar-Vell's clone/son/it's complicated, Genis-Vell, would eventually take up the mantle of Captain Marvel, but he kind'a sucked, so we don't talk about it in polite company.

Captain Mar-Vell's daughter, Phyla-Vell, also took up the mantle briefly during the Annihilation crossover- I think the first one? It's been a while- then took over as Quasar, and then died, I think, or something. She was an interesting character, but they never developed her too far.

I don't know if he counts, but there was also Noh-Varr, I don't know a ton about him, except that he was known as Marvel Boy for a while. They really messed with him- he went from hero to villain to mysterious to whatever to who cares. Pretty sure the last time he was seen was during the Infinity event, off in space, and good riddance.

There might be more, but who knows? :D It's all been about keeping DC Comics from having "Captain Marvel" splashed on any Shazam comics, because Captain Marvel is the superhero, and Shazam is the old wizard that gave him his powers. DC finally gave up and started calling the superhero character Shazam now, and it's just sad.

@danielsonsxe: It was a good place to rent games for my gaming mad son who completed single player games in days, I would rather spend a few quid than spending £30+ on games. It was a shame they closed here in the UK.

@kagatoac: I suspect Disney/Sony are trying to deliberately not clash with each other when it comes to Marvel movies. Like I'm going to see Venom but not sure what I'd choose if this released at the same time.
