Captain Toad Is Headed To Switch, Nintendo Direct Confirms

New Super Mario Odyssey levels are included.

There are numerous Wii U games that it would be nice to see on Nintendo Switch, and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is one that's frequently requested. Nintendo finally is making those dreams come true, announcing Switch and 3DS versions of the game during the latest Nintendo Direct event.

There is some newly added content for this edition specifically themed around last year's Super Mario Odyssey. During our brief look at the game, Nintendo showed off a New Donk City-themed level. At this point, however, we don't know just how many new levels are being added; a press release shared after the broadcast says there are "new miniature courses based on various Kingdoms." This version also features two-player local multiplayer where each player can use a single Joy-Con. One controls Toad while the other provides support, doing things like firing turnips at enemies to keep them out of the way.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Nintendo Direct: All The New Switch Games Announced At March 2018 Event

For the most part, Captain Toad is the same game you already know--it's a charming platformer where the titular character can't jump. As such, you rely on rotating the map to help find ways to navigate the world. In addition to this new Switch version, Nintendo also plans to bring the game to 3DS with 3D support and touchscreen controls.

Both the Switch and 3DS version of Captain Toad launch on July 10. A price was not shared, but Treasure Tracker for Wii U launched at a discounted price of $40 when it was originally released. For more announcements, check out our roundup of the jam-packed March 2018 Nintendo Direct.

Thank you Nintendo for not leaving 3DS owners behind. I've yet to buy a Switch so this is fantastic news! Not to mention the remake of Luigi's Mansion.

I don't really think anybody asked for a port of this game, lol.

So many better game titles from the Wii u to choose from, in my opinion ;P

It was a fun little game for $40 on the Wii U. I kind of hoped it would evolve into its own series. No sequel just yet but it's nice that they're still interested in it. Not sure if I'd buy it again personally. This is not one I'd want to replay, at least not yet.

If porting old games is "lazy", then it doesn't absorb resources for new projects. So where's the problem?

Wow just look at this console. Half of its games are Wii U ports and the other half is made by either indie games or other ports that run like shit on the console. For people that either don't like playing games on the go or already own most of these ported games on Wii U (like me) or PS4/Xbox One/PC, there's no point in buying this console, at least not for now. Odyssey and Splatoon 2 are not enough. However, i'm happy that at least they are still releasing some really interesting and good stuff for the old Nintendo 3DS.

@xandxdurx2: So you mean like MS and Sony when they were both trying to port the entirety of the PS3 and 360 libraries respectively? Its been one year and in that one year, they released several high caliber exclusives(1 a month). That's a much better first year than either MS or Sony put up this gen.

@Sepewrath: How many PS3 exclusives Sony ported to the PS4? I can't remember all of them, but i think GoW 3, TLOU and Uncharted trilogy. MS did this with Halo (although you can still play these games via BC, so you really don't need to buy the game again), Gears of War 1 - which was a Full Remaster, not a port - State of Decay and i might be missing more games, i don't know. All the other games ported for the PS4/One were from 3rd parties and has nothing to do with Sony or MS. Now, let's see how many Switch games were or are being ported from the Wii U: DK Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, Pokken, Hyrule Warriors, Breath of the Wild, and who knows how many more they will port, like Super Mario Maker, 3D World, Pikmin 3 and etc. Sony and MS didn't port all their exclusive games for the current-gen consoles, and PS3 and 360 weren't like the Wii U was, a failure in terms of sales. What kind of incentive Nintendo is giving for Wii U owners to go and buy a Switch if the only thing they do is porting the old games for the new console non-stop? They make people who bought the console look like a bunch of fools that spent too much money on something that really don't matter now since most of its games are on another console and they'll need to buy all of them again. To you, it may not be a big deal, but for people like me that don't live in USA and have to spend 2x or even 4x more on a Nintendo game than North-Americans (a Wii U game here costs around 250-300 bucks) this is a big deal. It's just not an option for me to buy a new console and all the same games again. If i don't to that then i'll be left with not a lot of choices in terms of exclusive titles for the Switch, which brings me to my next point...

They didn't release several high caliber exclusives a month, last year. Last year they released Splatoon 2, Xenoblade 2 and Odyssey as >>exclusives<< that were considered good. All the other ones were ports, including Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 or Pokken. I only count 3 months out of 12 here with new exclusive games and that's the issue with the Switch. If i buy one, and i keep my old Wii U games, there's not a lot to go to after i play Odyssey and Splatoon 2, since i own most of 1st party Wii U games and the other Switch games from 3rd parties are also available for the other current-gen consoles for a while now, like DOOM, Skyrim, Resident Evil Revelations, Rayman Legends, Payday 2 and etc. Totally different situation than the first few years of One and PS4, that DID have a lot of ports, but those were only available in old consoles and the new versions were actually BETTER than the original games (better resolution and framerate). The only thing that i agree with you is that they had a more solid first year in terms of games than PS4 or XBox One, but a lot of brand new exclusive games? No. Just a bunch of ports. Luckily most of them are Nintendo games that do have a lot of quality.

At least the 3DS are having interesting ports that DO matter and were needed, like Bowser's Inside Story (a 2009 game), Superstar Saga (a Gameboy Advance game) or Luigi's Mansion (a Gamecube game).

@xandxdurx2: Oh you don't remember how many PS3 games were ported to PS4? Let me remind you: Uncharted series, The Last of Us, Grand Theft Auto V, Bioshock series, Tomb Raider, Modern Warfare, Wipeout, Metro series, Skyrim, Shadow of the Colossus(which was also ported from PS2 to PS3) Dishonored, Assassins Creed, Arkham series, Darksiders, DmC, Bulletstorm, God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls--shall I go on? So you wrote a lot to say nothing, both MS and Sony have released far more rerelease from their previous consoles than the Switch has as of yet. And yes the 3rd party doesn't decide what is on MS and Sony's system, Sony wants it just as much as they do. But even if you wanted to just do Sony titles, they have plenty themselves.

@Sepewrath: My god...i'm sorry. I thought you could actually READ and understand that when i wrote "PS3 EXCLUSIVES" i meant games released ONLY for Sony's machines, not counting 3rd parties...3rd party game ports have nothing to do with Sony or MS. Activision, Bioware, Capcom, EA, Square Enix...they are the ones that decide whether they will release a port or a remaster of any game or not. Imagine how bizarre would it be if Sony approached Square and said "You know, why don't you release Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition in our console? Oh and while you're at it, release it for the Xbox One too, and Steam. Thanks". Again, the Switch case is clearly Nintendo's doing, regarding Wii U exclusive games, hence my whole argument. AGAIN: Sony or MS didn't port their whole fucking exclusive library of games on their current-gen consoles. Nintendo, on the other hand, keep doing this non-stop. You either ignored what i said or didn't understand, but in one thing you're right: I'm wasting my time writing things for someone like you.

One more thing: Shadow of the Colossus (PS4) is a REMAKE not a Remaster or just a port. The PS3 version was a remaster, not this one, so it doesn't count. I'm talking about ports here, not full-remakes.

@xandxdurx2: One, take your own advice--because I specifically took the time to call out the large number of PS3 exclusive games that made the jump. But like I said, I don't care if its exclusive or not--at the end of the day the PS4 has featured and will continue to feature a ton of ports from the PS3. So don't try and call one out on it, unless you are going to call out on it. The only difference between Nintendo and the others is Nintendo did the majority of the developing on the Wii U, so of course all the ports will be exclusive titles. But talking the sheer number of ports, the PS4 and X1 are way ahead of it.

@Sepewrath: "One, take your own advice--because I specifically took the time to call out the large number of PS3 exclusive games that made the jump." Bioshock, Metro, GTA, Skyrim, Dishonored, Assassin's Creed, Darksiders, Bulletstorm and etc are PS3 exclusives? When you learn to distinguish exclusives from multiplatforms, then we can reach into an agreement on something. At least you acknowledge what i said, that Nintendo is porting their whole Wii U exclusive games, which, again, is ridiculous. Of course Wii U was a failure, but it's time to move on and focus on new projects instead of porting so much stuff, even if the Wii U had more 1st party games than 3rd party ones, something that Sony and Microsoft already did a long time ago after they ported their exclusive games, which, by the way, ARE NOT even half of the games you mentioned back there. Will keep insisting on that over and over and over again until you get the point. Nintedo should've done 3 or 4 ports and then move on. Switch, like i said, is a port console, and a really bad one at that. There's nothing interesting in it if you already own a Wii U and a PS4. There's no point in buying the same games again.
