It has been almost four years since NCsoft offered first word on its newest massively multiplayer online game-creating outfit, Carbine Studios. The studio's project has largely been under wraps since then, but that changed today. As part of Gamescom 2011, NCsoft offered the first look at Carbine Studios' new project, confirming that the sci-fi MMO role-playing game is titled WildStar.

WildStar beta sign-ups have begun.

WildStar's premise has players colonizing a mysterious planet on the outer reaches of the known universe. Players will be able to assume the role of an explorer, soldier, scientist, or settler as they traverse the planet. They'll also be able to differentiate themselves from one another by selecting a race, faction, and path.

Carbine Studios boasted high-profile talent upon its formation in 2007. These notables included Tim Cain, who served as lead designer on the original Fallout, as well as Turbine cofounder Jeremy Gaffney.

NCsoft did not reveal a launch date or platforms for WildStar, but the publisher is soliciting beta-test participants for the PC edition through the game's official website. More than just announcing WildStar, NCsoft also brought a playable demo of the MMORPG to Gamescom 2011. Check back later for GameSpot's impressions of the game.
