Carmack Doom-ed to Lifetime Achievement Award

id Software CTO to pick up top honor at 2010 Game Developers Choice Awards as part of GDC in San Francisco next month; Warren Spector hosting.

Thanks to seminal early-'90s hits such as Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein, id Software essentially invented the first-person shooter genre as the industry currently knows it. Beyond being pioneers in the field of real-time 3D graphics, id's early software lineup also contributed to the proliferation of such standard features as networked multiplayer matches.

John Carmack
John Carmack

Now, the man behind the technology that powered those early shooters will have one more honor to add to his mantel, as Game Developers Conference show runners UBM TechWeb Game Network (formerly Think Services Game Group) announced today that it would honor id chief technical officer John Carmack with a Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the 2010 Game Developers Choice Awards.

According to show organizers, the Lifetime Achievement Award "recognizes the career and achievements of developers who have made an indelible impact on the craft of game development." Award winners are chosen by the Choice Awards Advisory Committee, which comprises industry luminaries such as Ben Cousins (EA DICE), Harvey Smith (Arkane), Raph Koster (Metaplace), John Vechey (PopCap), Ray Muzyka (BioWare), and Clint Hocking (Ubisoft).

"It's no exaggeration to say that John Carmack and id Software have had a monumental influence on all modern 3D games, but especially the first-person shooter genre," said GDC event director Meggan Scavio of Carmack's selection. "John is one of the key figures in the history of video games, and we're delighted to be giving him the Lifetime Achievement award this year."

Carmack will receive the accolade at the GDCAs, which will take place on March 11 in San Francisco as part of GDC 2010. The studio, which was purchased by Bethesda Softworks parent company Zenimax Media in June 2009, is currently work on the all-new intellectual property Rage, as well as Doom 4 and a free-to-play Web browser-based version of Quake, which is currently in a beta-testing phase.

GDC show runners also announced today that Junction Point Studios founder Warren Spector will host the 2010 GDCAs. Spector is best known for his contributions to the System Shock, Deus Ex, and Thief franchises. His studio, which was acquired by Disney in July 2007, is currently working on Epic Mickey, a platforming adventure game slated to ship for the Wii later this year.

Considering the trend, I suppose Brett Sperry would be up next - if he hasn't won this award already.

To RyuRanVII: Nope, I would not say ALL id staffers - current and former - should get this award. Remember John Romero (do see my comment below)? The guy who tried to insult our intelligence with bad games and equally bad statements (which he then tries to retract or write off as 'misquoted')? He made Doom together with John Carmack, but he made so many people angry that he got the dubious honor of being the final boss in Doom. And John Carmack would probably not want to ever remember him. He's likely a patient dude (he's probably the only person still around at id since its founding), but no barrier of tolerance is immune to John Romero.

Ah, about time. John Carmack certainly has a strong, solid career - all in one single company (id Software) in fact - and is especially exceptional when you compare him to his once erstwhile comrade, John Romero. "John Romero's About to Make You His B**ch - Suck it Down." *Groan* At least we know who's NOT going to get this award, especially considering that this dude jumped from one failing company to another.

Doom seems like a life time ago! Good on him With out doom we may not have seen classics like Fallout3/Call of Duty ect because he was the master mind behind the FPS.

More and more the gaming industry is starting to resemble the movie industry...wich I guess explains why it's so incredibly hard to find a game that doesn't utterly sucks now a days.

@ninjaroach81 I can't I already killed my liver with the hatred :P When I first posted I forgot one very important thing,he made 3D gaming practical. Its not just FPS's either. Now the reason I "hate" him is because he is a industry drone, I loath industry drones because they make arbitrary and bland games.

@ZippyDSMLee You seem to be focusing on his later work (yes Doom 3 wasn't much more than a clone of the shooters on the market at the time, but it was still entertaining). This award has more to do with the early work (Wolf3D, Doom, Quake, et al) which popularized and defined the FPS genre; without him, there would be no COD, MOH, Halo, GOW etc. Put down the Haterade and just let the guy get his just rewards!

@ acer_062:I dunno there are to many yes men and lulzers these days, no one really cares about balance or qaulity of the qaulity of balance. D3 was a horrible game engine and about as bad as a game. It was a poor attempt at cinergy IMO mixing film elements into a game is going to turn out bad 90% of the time because the majority of film is static in nature its meant to be watched and not interacted with. Doom 3 was the worst thing to happen to ID. And whats really sad DOOM 1(quake,quake 2) has better level layouts than most new first person games.....

@DaGamingDude O'rly I bet he weighs less than 250LB :P I be the bigger man just much less well received and achived'd :P LOL Not that much of a legend since the D3 engine was so shtty but the doom engine did set in motion 3D gaming, so ya I guess he dose deserve it for that alone.. @ jadefury27 Ya Carmack is a douche was a douche like Romero is/was and for the record Daikatana was better than D3 only because it had non corridor shooter levels in it was. But anyway both have gotten to big for themselves.... tho Carmack is in a better position to redeem himself engine creation wise but frankly looking at Id's staff these days.... I can't be hopeful Rage or anything attached to ID will not be a simplified and dumbed down game for the times. I mean D3 barely was a success,Q4 floundered,Wolfensiten is a joke there is no soul nor rime nor reason to game dev anymore its just make it sell it and on to the next project...

Without John Carmack and the rest of id, there would be no FPS genre or it certainly wouldn't exist as it does today. Nearly every single FPS game you play today has traces of their old engines in it. Next time you fire up MW2 or Left 4 Dead 2, you're playing games that were, at their core, built on id's old games.

@nini200, Thanks for completely missing my point, i simply stated that the IP Port '666' was 'APT' (appropriate) and made no association whatsoever with "Dark or Evil". I laugh at people that make ASSumptions..

Well deserved. He arguably should have won this award the first year. While his game engines are certainly his greatest contributions, he was also visionary in adopting shareware (what became demos) and early online gaming.

I was not a huge fan of the Id phenomenon - the FPS genre came to completely dominate the PC gaming industry at the expense of adventure and classic strategy titles - but there is no denying Carmack's influence and impact. Kudos. Doom itself was enough of a landmark to make this a no-brainer. He's in some seriously elite company. Miyamoto, Meier, Wright... the giants.
