CD Projekt Announces "Ambitious" Game Coming From Newly Acquired Studio

CD Projekt has acquired a Boston studio founded by BioShock, Halo, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band veterans to make a new game.

The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 studio CD Projekt has acquired the Boston-based independent studio The Molasses Flood, which made the games The Flame in the Flood and Drake Hollow. The team was founded in 2014 by veterans of the BioShock, Halo, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band series.

CD Projekt CEO Adam Kicinski said The Molasses Flood will "bring a lot of talent and determination" to the company going forward. The team will be working on a new "ambitious" game set in an existing CD Projekt universe, but no other details were divulged. Presumably this would be a new Witcher or Cyberpunk game, but we don't know for sure.

The Molasses Flood studio head Forrest Dowling added, "When CD Projekt approached us about the possibility of working together, we saw an incredible opportunity to reach a much wider audience through a collaboration with a company we love, creating games in worlds we love."

According to a press release, The Molasses Flood will retain its independence and autonomy as it works in "close cooperation" with CD Projekt Red. In its own statement, The Molasses Flood said the studio will be able to hire many more people thanks to its sale to CD Projekt. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The Molasses Flood gets its name from the 1919 disaster where a storage tank holding more than 2 million gallons of molasses broke open in Boston. More than 20 people died.

This is CD Projekt's second big acquisition of 2021, following its buyout of Canadian studio Digital Scapes, which co-developed Cyberpunk 2077 with CD Projekt Red.

In other news, CD Projekt recently delayed the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077 to 2022.

In addition to being known for The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt runs the DRM-free games store GOG.

You know the situation is bad for CDPR when they have to point out that they are NOT the ones developing their new game.

And to think a year ago they were riding high.

After witcher 3 I would have bought anything from these guys... Then I did buy "anything" and now I won't buy anything again until i know it isn't the biggest lie in gaming.

I'm not buying another game form this company ever again. At least not until they

1. stop releasing broken games

2. fix their current broken game and release a physical version that has all the fixes in it

@Slash_out: If the game had issues that they just didn’t know about, they could be forgiven, but they actually admitted to knowing that the console versions of Cyberpunk were completely broken. They said they purposely only showed footage of the PC version. They straight-up lied to everyone. So, yeah… They deserve some of the harshest criticism anyone has ever given to a game developer. They deserve much worse for intentionally releasing a broken product. That’s the very definition of false advertising, which is illegal.

@stickemup: No they don't. They deserve harsh criticism. Not the harshest.

The PC version is and was perfectly playable and very well balanced and had few bugs aside from animation bugs, which was perfectly understandable. The Witcher 3, Skyrim, and many other open world were not any better when they were released.

The console version was trash though. That is true. And they deserve criticism for that. But not the kind they are getting now.

@Slash_out: They did lie about their obviously-still-in-alpha game in order to keep all their pre-order booty.

So yes, harsh treatment it is.

@molinars@stickemup: the PC version was fine and was tested by many people outside of Cdprojekt, the game was complete and working as intended minus minor animation bugs that could be understood in a release of a sandbox game like this one. The console version was trash yes.

But this is not about harsh treatment. Please re-read my post... The one you answered to.

This is about treating Cdprojekt much more harshly than other devs for similar releases. There is a fine line between being really disapointed and criticizing, to treating the dev as ennemies, or even going full hormonal "I am not going to buy a game from them ever again".

Companies like EA, Ubisoft, Acti and so many more, have released catastrophic games over the years. Their attitudes have been unacceptable for a very long time and for many releases and yet they are mostly treated with indifference. Why? Because this is expected of them. While Cdprojekt is getting a much harsher treatment... Because they were good previously. Is this fair?

I am sorry but this botch release is not a justification for the hate and reaction they are getting. I get it, if someone bad does someone bad, it's per the course, but if someone good does a bad thing it seems amplified. And yes they deserve their fair share of criticism for the console versions of the game. But here is a pretty important message.

Cdprojekt was good not because they were a "good" company. But because it knew the advantages of being good to the consumers in the current climate. That's why they released big expansions that added dozens of hours of gameplay that cost the price of a fortnite skin (that ads 0 hours of gameplay might I say) . That's why they released many free DLCs, that's why they want to make sure upgrading their games from last to next gen is free, that's why they released their brand new games on their own plateform drm free, that's why GOTY versions are free for everyone that owns their games already, that's why they do not charge you for buying in different currencies. (It's not 39.99$ and 39.99€. It's 39.99$ and whatever the current exchange rate is in euro) and the list of those we now consider "pro-consumer actions" is very long.

So by being hormonal and a dumb f*ck you are over punishing a company for a big mistake they did (which is fine), but you are also pushing it beyond the point of "making them understand that this better not happen again", into "you are unforgivable, nothing you do will change this". Because then, why would they bother trying to keep up a pro consummer attitude in the future if it's worthless? Why make the effort, why spend the ressources, if they get nothing in return anymore?

That's why I posted this above. There is punishement, and there is over punishement. And this is clearly what is happening here. And if you do as the post I answered to does, you'll push it beyond the line and you'll loose everything I mentioned previously insteado f just making sure "they get the message" which should be the point no? Do we want them to continue as they did before Cyberpunk? Or do we want them to disappear or turn into an EA because the console version was trash?

This is not about being afraid to criticise. You SHOULD criticize as it was not acceptable. But you should still be fair.

I bet it's "Lute Hero" featuring Dandelion.

The Flame and the Flood was an EXCELLENT game. Seriously nothing else quite like it...

I enjoyed Drake Hollow quite a bit for a survivalcraft-adventure hybrid. Was worth a weekend.

Coming 2029. Will be patched in 2031.

Someone had to say it. Surprised no one did already.

I'd definitely take another game in the Witcher world. Maybe similar to that Netflix show with a young Vesimir or something from the past when the 6 Witcher School's were formed.

@valgaav_219: I'm thinking they will create a new character and focus on Zerrikania and will have a Middle East and Asian setting
