CD Projekt Surpasses Ubisoft To Become Europe's Most Valuable Game Company

The Polish studio has passed a new milestone as The Witcher 3 celebrates its fifth birthday.

After being valued at $8.13 billion, Polish company CD Projekt have overtaken France's Ubisoft to become the most valuable game company in Europe, Video Games Chronicle reports. While the company's gaming branch, CD Projeckt Red, has only three titles under its belt (not including a handful of spin-off Witcher titles), CD Projekt also runs the GOG distribution platform. This year, a resurgence of interest in The Witcher spurred by the Netflix show, as well as hype for the studio's upcoming game Cyberpunk 2077, have helped push the company's value even higher.

While the numbers are still relatively small compared to gaming behemoths in North America and Japan, with Nintendo valued at $53.73 billion and Activision Blizzard at $56.27 billion, it's still an impressive result for the Witcher developers. Ubisoft could potentially make up ground later this year with the launch of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, as well.

Now Playing: Why The Witcher 3 Is Still So Important 5 Years Later

After a number of delays, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 is on track for its planned September release date, despite the studio's switch to remote working due to the COVID-19 crisis. CDPR has also confirmed it will be returning to the Witcher universe in the future, though its current focus is entirely on Cyberpunk 2077.

CD Projekt Red's most recent game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, recently celebrated its 5 year anniversary, and still holds an enduring appeal for many gamers.

How "gamers" can be raving about this is a mystery to me. CD-Project has literally only one IP and is a prime example to where the industry is heading as a whole: No risks, no games, but services to rival Steam.

Apparently, there is too much risk envolved and mostly not enough money to be earned in creating and selling big-budget games the traditional way anymore.

Couldn't have happened to a better developer. Could it be that the weak willed are getting tired of constantly being asked for more money for a game they own or that parents are getting tired of throwing cash at their kids for weapon skins and dance moves? Doubtful. But well done anyway, CDPR.

Surprising considering how many games Ubisoft releases vs how many CD does. I guess Ubi really got hit hard last year.

They release one game per 10 years, how is this even possible? Oh yea, i remember, Ubi is the company that releases ALL their games under the Ass Creed formula and has never taken any risky moves in over a decade. What a useless company.

They actually have made games stepping away from the AC-formula, but consumers weren't buying these in sufficient numbers.

Also, what risks has CD-Project taken? Their only big IP is an elaborate yet still very much run-of-the-mill openworld-action-game(like WoW, The Elder Scrolls, GTA, Assassins Creed and MANY MORE ), where you can see tits and is based on a series of popular trash-fantasy novels.

Their other game is a card-game based on the very same IP. How risky and distinguished is all of this?

They literally did nothing to advance the art of Video Games - except for paying their average developer less than other big names in the industry do.(sarcasm)

Look how far quality and integrity has brought you? Not farther than other questioned giants with more history, sure, but very fast indeed. Hope they don't sell out.

@santinegrete: Rockstar has basically made their bread and butter with that. I wish they'd put out a game more than once very 8 years, but the games they do put out are great and very well crafted. Not every developer can do it, it's just a design philosophy and the ability to put out must play games. Many studio's have failed after spending years in development.

It is an elite group to be a part of and CD Projekt Red definitely seem to exude that philosophy.

I don't think Ubisoft is considered as "Europe's Most Valuable Game Company"

Sure they release a lot of games due to big budget, but that doesn't mean their so called AAA titles worth more than some random low budget indie games out there.

Ubisoft's best game released since AC 1 and 2 is Rainbow Six Siege which is 1 good title for over 10 years, out of 174 games that is

@gerygo: quality doesn't translate into Sales that well. If it was true all the time, we've had gotten an Undying sequel more than a decade ago.

@santinegrete: Indeed, only a few developers, especially today, can spend five, six or seven years on one project and put out a gem that also sells multi millions each time.

Ubisoft sucks. They release buggy as games that aren't even original. This is assassins creed like 9? The first assassin's creed came out when I was in middle school lmao. Just invest in new ideas

Wow!

Pretty amazing when you think about who their competition was.

While I have never been a huge Ubisoft fan they have quite the number of games under their belt. Factor in big name AAA franchises like Assassin’s Creed and that feat is all the more impressive.

Also, considering CD Projekt Red is almost the exact opposite when it comes to games in their own stable and that revelation is even more wild. I’m sure that much of what pushed them over the top was all the other things they are associated with (as the article alluded to.) but still that shouldn’t take anything away from what the team over there have managed to pull off.

Seems like CD Project Red is on track to make new waves in the industry when Cyberpunk releases later in the year. AT this point in time (also considering the hype both the game and the studio is getting.) I wouldn’t be surprised if it snags the top spot on every major gaming site’s GOTY list.

Now just to find the time to play all these great games.

I'm glad to hear CDPR is doing so great because it really is a signal to the rest of the industry. I mean, sure they've still got some problems but, the truth is that GOG is pro consumer, they've been making progress in changing the crunch culture in their own company and have been making killer games the entire time.

I mean, I was only marginally interested in the Switch version of Witcher 3 and am broke af like everyone else right now but, I still saved up and bought it just because I wanted to support them.

Here's to hoping that after this last year of constant screw ups the AAA industry gets the hint.

@dlist4ever: There'll always be different types of developers. Some just have the right stuff, like CDPR and Rockstar, who can spend half a decade or more on one title and put out mega hits to sustain themselves with massive amounts of quality in each games. However, those will always be a higher level elite class of developer.

Most major developers will continue to put out games at a regular pace, because they have to and because there is a market for it.

Indeed always praise those great developers, but it will never be a standard.

Must be due to gog primarily? If you compare game releases surely Ubisoft crushes CDPR (talking about money and not quality)?

@Sushiglutton: Quality takes time, look at blizzard so many more years on the market than CDPR and dont have any games developed, Ubisoft for example got waaaaay more than CDPR but most lack the soul.

This kinda reminded me of the French Governments offer for UK based game companies to move to France with tax free benefits. I'm guessing nobody moved even King aka one the greediest companies out there is still in the UK.

Thats cool, but as a Witcher fan (read all the books, loved the netflix show) I would really like more games.

Hell do one where you create your own Witcher, and Geralt is the teacher. Have it as some mad mage tried re-creating the child of grasses. He was stopped but you were already created.

This is such a huge market signal. A company that focuses on basically on making singular, good games (only 3!!!) now outpaces a far more storied one with a tonne of franchises that it just milks to death with a zillion concurrent revenue streams.

Gamers, and now the market it seems, are finally getting sick of that BS business model after what's been a decade of just the worst monetization practices that have degraded the entire medium.

Hopefully EA is next...although at ~$34B, there's a long way to go yet!

@greasemonkey42: CDPR doesnt just make games though. they are the owners of GOG which is very popular with pc gamers due to policies such as no drm and refunds. they also make sure every game is compatible with modern systems something other stores dont do.

@greasemonkey42: CDPR has worked on many more games than just 3. Pretty sure it's over a dozen at this point.
