Celebrated Xbox One Game Ori and the Blind Forest Profitable in One Week

"Microsoft is super happy, so we'll see about Ori's future," developer says.

Indie game Ori and the Blind Forest, which received widespread praise upon its release last month for Xbox One and PC, turned a profit after just one week. Developer Thomas Mahler shared the news in a post on NeoGAF, also teasing that this success might mean more Ori in the future.

No Caption Provided

"Business-wise, Ori was already profitable a week after release and Microsoft is super happy, so we'll see about Ori's future," Mahler said.

We spoke with Moon Studios co-founder Gennadiy Korol today, who confirmed the game was profitable for Microsoft after one week of sales.

However, it took "a couple of weeks" of sales for Ori to become a profitable project for Moon Studios itself, he said. Korol didn't say, however, how many copies of the game have been sold to date.

Ori sales are likely to increase further still, as an Xbox 360 version of the game is due out later this spring.

GameSpot's 9/10 Ori and the Blind Forest review hailed it as a "rapturous platformer that is as fun as it is beautiful."

Looks like a very beautiful game and when I get an Xbox One someday, I will certainly be buying this! Still have my 360 but would rather wait and enjoy it on Xbox One instead.

If they're happy with it, just leave it as a standalone game and move onto something else. Use its popularity and success to develop an even more ambitious project.

I don't understand. It turned a profit in one week but took several weeks to become profitable for Moon Studios? What does that mean?

It is a great game, though. Would love to see some sequels, and I rarely say that.

My guess is that Microsoft put up some money so Moon has to pay that back first

Very happy to hear it. Maybe there is hope for 2D platformers after all.

I thoroughly enjoyed this game...one of the most pleasurable gaming experiences in a long time.

Will definitely keep an eye on Moon Studios from now on; way to earn respect!

As of right now, this is the best game of 2015 by a long shot, and it doesn't look like any other games coming out this year will be anything spectacular.

Now bring on Cuphead. That and Ori are in my top 10 list of games to look forward to in 2015. Now it's a top 7 list since Zrlda, Uncharted 4, and Quantum Break were delayed to 2016.

When I first started Ori I was like "Yeah it's good, but the praise seems extreme".... Didn't take me long to see where the critics were coming from (after the water-chase I fell in love completely)

That water escape was epic. Then the scene after was awesome. I haven't loved an indie like this since Dust and I love this game even more.

@GraveUypo: I'm pretty sure the 360 would explode trying to run this lol. I'm not sure why you call the x1 useless. Last gen is useless when it comes to modern games, and just holds back current gen. I hope that all games from now on are limited to current gen only and leave last gen in the past now.

My favorite PS4 game Resogun also cannot for the PS3 and the Vita. There's nothing wrong with expanding as the quality isn't lost.

@dani_i89: Not sure what the corporate structure of a studio has to do with liking a game, but regardless, Moon Studio's production of Ori was bankrolled and overseen by Microsoft Studios, so it wasn't actually independently developed. Maybe that's why you like it?

Got it on release day. I've played it for about an hour or so, but just can't get into it. I normally love platform games. Will try again in few days and see how it goes.

@mnkpro1: try to play until the water escape sequence at least. you MUST experience that. that was 10/10 to me, even though the rest of the game was a 7.5 or 8.

just posted my quick review on steam and I'm just gonna paste it here:

I finished the game a few days after it was released. Now when I look back, I am surprised that I remember the fond memories so clearly. This is like no other game. It's just art transformed into a video game, in visuals, sound effects and story telling. I HATE platformers, dont remember the last time I bothered to finish one. And even so, I am saying that Ori and the Blind Forest is my favorite game of 2015.

@davem1992@adsparky: XD that came from nowhere; I find the story of the 3rd better, but 4 is a more complete game IMO.

@Zombies101@davem1992@adsparky: Really?

I thought the P4 cast was horribly cliche imo and they never really broke out of their tropes.

Not saying you're wrong, I just prefer P3 in every way.

I was planning on getting this game day one but, life happened as usual. I really want to play it but, I'm lost in Bloodborne, Axiom Verge and still trying to finish Dying Light. Not sure why so many people say they can't find anything to play this gen? I seem to have the opposite problem.

@bdrtfm:

They must have far more time to play games than I can even imagine. I only play on Xbox, but I'm so far behind in my X360 backlog that I doubt I'll ever play everything I own. Oh well, at least I can put all of my X360 games on two 2TB HDs now!

@bdrtfm: It's just the CoD kiddies who can't see beyond the next big shooter release. Gaming vets know how to find games to play. It's like how the PS4 has "no games". I checked out the line-up and I've discovered at least 20 games I want to try out sometime. No games? Bah! I've never had so many games on my radar since the PS1 era.

@Barighm@bdrtfm:

You know the platform has a game shortage when people are jumping in to retroactively defend it from invisible attacks about its lack of games. The fact that the defense took the form of insults was proof of your delusional fanboyism.

You didn't spend $400 on a PS4 to play Axiom Verge. You are playing Axiom Verge because it is what is on your PS4.

@bdrtfm: Do not look at this game as a huge thing where you have to sink in a lot of time. It's a pretty simple (although not easy at all..) and relatively short but full journey. It's a very different experience ... kinda like a snack if you will... but like the best snack in the world :) It's hard to explain. It's very easy to get into. Say you have an hour break, you can spend it playing Ori. I'd really suggest getting it and finishing it first (can be finished during a weekend). You'll have lots to say about it just as I do now :p

@CDsmasher@bdrtfm: yeah full play through around 10 hour mark. More if you want to 100% Its a 20$ title though. So as much playtime as many aaa, for less than half the cost.

Great game. Its in the metroidvania style of gameplay.

I'm looking forward to playing this. I haven't had a chance to sit down and buy it yet, but after I heard it was a metroidvania-style game, I'm pretty excited to see how it turned out. Gonna make time for it this summer and see if it lives up to my new expectations.
