Chappell Roan Reacts To Fan Using Nintendo DS To Take Photos At Her Concert

Well, that's certainly one way to get around the "no flash photography" rule.

Pop sensation Chappell Roan recently caught a fan taking photos of her live performance during a concert. But instead of reacting with irritation, the singer-songwriter seemed delighted once she realized the concert attendee in question was taking said photos via a rather unconventional camera: the one embedded in their Nintendo DS.

During a London stop on her Midwest Princess Tour, the DS-toting fan caught Roan's eye, prompting the singer to respond, "B***h, is that a DS?"

"You keep taking photos on your DS," Roan encouraged the fan. "You keep doin' it!"

Roan's commentary was met with cheers from the crowd. As for the Internet, opinions were generally positive, as it seems fans were unaware that Roan is a fan of the console (or gaming in general). One netizen dubbed the moment "iconic," while another asserted that anyone carrying around a DS in this day and age is "cool AF."

"I'm surprised she didn't yell at him," said one Twitter user, referencing Roan's recent verbal outburst toward a photographer at the 2024 VMAs (though in fairness, the photographer in that situation yelled first). Roan performed at the awards ceremony, and later took home the award for Best New Artist.

She’s really great (speaking of voice and songs and even live performance) and I guess cannon fodder for the narrow minded toxic haters that inhabit the video game world.

@stardagger: I'm pretty amazed by the amount of people both in this comments section and the world at large who seem to hate her. Not hate her music, just her. I've only recently discovered her and don't really feel too strongly about her one way or the other, but I'd say she's left a generally positive impression on me overall, and I do like her unique style with regard to art direction and fashion in her music videos.

I'd certainly understand "Not a fan of her music" takes, but most people speaking negatively about her seem to have nothing at all to say about her music. Even if you do think her music is terrible... turn off the radio. Spotify exists for a reason. So all this leaves me with a question: If she hasn't committed the sin of making terrible music (and we live in an era where you can listen to anything you want at any time without relying on radio DJs), then what, exactly is her crime?

I've got a few theories on the answer to that question, though I'll keep them to myself for now, lest I become the cannon fodder next.

@doomsdayhell01: Why? I only recently discovered her. I think her music's alright, quite catchy, and she has a unique aesthetic, but I don't feel too strongly one way or the other. So I'm curious why so many people seem to be "irritated" or "sick of" her, especially in the streaming era where you don't have to listen to what's on the radio if you don't wish to.

God, this person has only just gotten super-famous and I'm already sick of her.

Doesn't help my coworker is a huge fan of hers lol.

Eh, her music is OK though, so it's not all bad.

@mrbojangles25: Out of curiosity--since you're under no requirement to listen to her music, and just said her music isn't bad in your opinion--what is it exactly that has you so "sick" of her? I remember the days of getting sick of songs due to them constantly being played on the radio, but streaming has overtaken radio, so nobody's really forced to listen to anything they don't like. What is it about this artist who produces admittedly-not-bad music that you find so irritating? I'd imagine to be sick of her, you'd need to be hearing a lot of her tunes far too often, but unless your TikTok feed is filled with her music, I can't really imagine a scenario in which you're having her music shoved at you, and it seems you're not irritated by her music anyway.

I'm not trying to come off as rude or judgemental at all, I'm just genuinely curious. I'd totally understand if you hated her music, but it sounds like you kind of just hate her for... gaining fame?

@soulmuncher666: You're too old to know, I know I am.

The older you get, the less you know about pop stars.

Must be a 3DS if it has cameras, it was cool to be able to take/view 3D pictures. Hopefully the Switch 2 brings back 3D screens and cameras (and Street Pass).

@girlusocrazy: I wondered the same while writing the article! Thought it could be a DSi, and since I couldn't find any commentary from the photo-taker confirming what hardware they were using to take the photo, I just decided to use Roan's words and call it a DS.

But I also remember the 3DS just being referred to as "my DS" when talking to friends during the 3DS era, and they knew I was talking about my 3DS, not my OG DS. I suspect you're right and that it was, indeed, a 3DS.

@girlusocrazy: Could've been a DSi, but yeah 3DS seems a bit more likely
